- Join the science discord! / discord Hey everybody, ive been busy the past two weeks! I had a great time at Playlist Live, and finished some much needed organization in my garage. I finally got around to building a large kiln to help me make investment molds for aluminum casting. Now I can finally get this laser gun built! Keep reading, more below!
Shoutout to Keystone Science! / hobcoman
I couldn't find any info on any projects like this, so I thought I would have a try myself. I thought an oven would be the perfect platform, it already has a door, space for insulation, and comes with heating elements!
Im not giving the oven any more power that it would normally use in Self Cleaning Mode. Im just increasing the efficiency by adding high quality insulating materials and eliminating ways for heat to escape.
The oven was almost exactly $270 to build, which is about $200 cheaper than a used kiln on craigslist. and 1/10 the cost of a new kiln. I could only get it to 820c - 1500f, Real kilns can get to 2300f. I think my kiln could get that hot if I wound my own heating elements with nichrome wire and added another layer of insulation.
Oven - 40
Morter - 25
Ceramic Blanket - 120
Firebrick - 40
Temp control - 30
Everything else - 20
5.6 kw = about 30-50c an hour to run. I pay 5-9c per kWh.

Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" how does this have no replies
edit: Forgot to say first lol
Wth seriously 😱
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" GET A 3D PRINTER
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" omg it's the king of random I watch all ur vid I love ur channel
Grant Thompson - "The King of Random" can u sub to me I love ur channel
"yeah that's probably asbestos" had me dying 😂
Shadow Realm wut? you know what asbestos is right?
Shadow Realm no he wasn't
Probably had him dying too
+Andrew Antenberg, omg lmao i'm dying of laughter now

:D
ironically, the backyard scientist cant use his backyard...
WhoLock LOL
LOL have to change his name to the front yard scientist, or how about.... what ever i can do in the driveway scientist
WhoLock thegaragescientist
WhoLock . Or the yard scientists
James Boyd - agreed going to have to change his name to TheFrontyardScientist now.
Exclent project Kevin! Really love how it turned out.
Best regards :D
Estoy sorprendido de verte aquí..
+Experimentar En Casa thanks!! Dude your channel blew up! I'm a good way ;)
Es hora de comer.
Vermont potter/maker here and I LOVE this project! Lots of possibilities...! Thanks also for workshop tour. So much open space in the middle!
Why would anybody dislike this! He's always so jolly and excited he spends lots of money on this. Just so hater can come and be jerks. He puts effort into this , like c'mon guys
Kiyguo the Artist all those dislikes are are grant Thompson "fans" that think he should be the one and only
i like both grant and kevin :c Can't all fans get along? Spread positivityyyy
joes9987 true, they are both good channels with similar content
Kiyguo the Artist so true he don't have to do this but he does so cut him some slack he does it in his own time and spend loads of his money he earns and you disliking it
maybe cause dislike =/= hater. a dislike is a critique and tells the channel it can do better.
I like how you managed to fit a television on the front of your kiln.
0:24 "Yeah, that's prolly asbestos." .... "Then I removed the old fiberglass insulation...."
Poop
O
Depending on how old the oven is it might have been asbestos.
you have the best science videos on CZcams. You got it dude
that makes me really happy to hear, thanks :D
TheBackyardScientist You are Welcome!!!!!!!
Mickey Hayes Cody's Lab is also a great science channel!
COdys Lab has everyone beat.....
I would say the order is 1. Cody'slab 2. Thebackyardsceintist.
Looked like a fun project. :-) You put a lot of time into it, and did a great job. I wonder how long the heating elements will last at 1400 deg F. Thanks for the links!
+electronicsNmore thanks it sure did take a long time. Don't even get me started on making the plaster molds and the Burn out schedule. The heating elements? I think they will last. I guess they are steel tubes with Nichrome wire through the middle insulated with magnesium oxide. It won't get as hot as nichrome elements I could wind myself. They are 18 and 22 ohms. If are used lower ohm heating elements I bet I could get the temperature a lot higher.
Hi
I can barely replace a lightbulb and this dude is making a kiln out of an old oven. Kudos to you!!
your projects ARE sensible on contrary to other channels which explain stuff that we cannot even get to see
*Can you show Linus' team how to properly make a CPU heat sink? Lol*
Na he will make that cpu explodes
I'd love to see more on this type of casting. Hadn't seen it in action before, very impressive.
Really awesome project. I'd suggest pre-heating moulds before casting and use cone shaped risers for increased pressure. When i worked in a foundry we never poured into anything without risers.
Dude I appreciate the video. A while back I disassembled an oven to scrap the metal and kept the heating element. Was very hesitant because I wasn’t sure if they were tough enough to hold up. But now I know. Thanks again man
I'm happy for you and the new house! it's always a good feeling when I see someone's hard work payoff. hope to see some improvements to the yard and house itself so record those for us too!
Oohhh I'm here early :D also great project concept from what 45 seconds I've seen as I am typing this xD
Wait woah!! I am on your video!!! Thank you so much!!
Thanks! NP I like your videos I think my subscribers will like them too :)
TheBackyardScientist boiiii first like plz pin me (I was the first like)I was also first reply.
TheBackyardScientist hi can I plz have a shoutout
TheBackyardScientist I love ur vids I was the 189 to like I watch all ur vids luv u u rock I only hav 70 subs but I hope to meet u one day
Love this. Great project well done. I am a big fan of casting. You have a great place there Kevin, thanks for the tour. 👍🏼
I love all your videos Kevin..thank you for taking time to do this
Great way to recycle an old oven.
Hi
@@charltonchiggls4468 s
Wow! Talk about a DIY house! Everything in your workspace is custom man! It's so cool!
this was posted on my mother's birthday (May 21st) thank you for posting this, it isn't of any other revalence to my mother, but somehow it's heartwarming
Aw, well that's wholesome
I really like this dude, he seems so passionate ! And his experiences are always so original and creative !
This looks like it would be perfect for some glass working if you branch out from aluminum.
That's exactly why I'm watching this lol
Isn't this exactly what Linus tried to do and miserably failed?(Not the oven part, the 3D printing and casting part)
Sort of. Linus tried to do aluminium casting, like what happens in this video. However, the difference arises in what they were making. It looks like here he made a lower receiver for a gun, while linus made the heat sink. It is an important difference as the space between the heatsink fins make it extremely hard to cast, while the larger overall size of the receiver allow for easier casting.
I haven't seen that video but yeah a heat sink would be extremely difficult to cast without some kind of vacuum process. Pretty sure they are just machine from a solid chunk. That is a lower receiver I made but.. it's just going to be a prop Halo gun :P which may or may not end up shooting a 40 W laser beam.

4:29 "I'm not gonna be found experiments back here because the ground-the entire ground- is flammable" best quote ever
Looking back in 2019. The shoutout to keystone science, now that he’s in college he hardly uploads anymore
So were you an engineering student or something, or did you teach yourself everything? Either way, you're on my dream list of zombie apocalypse survivors.
That aluminum melts faster than my internet connection loads
😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love your garage, you motivate me to arrange it !
I've only been watching your videos for about a week now but I really like your content, keep up the hard/good work
Have you ever looked at a comment and thought, "Man I Wish I Wrote That."
yup
Man I wish I wrote that
I love these project videos. Can you please do more projects? :D
Everything is so well detailed. Well done!
Been watching a few of your videos over the past months.
Everything I see is good, and interesting.
Sub earned.
Well, now he's the front yard scientist
"The floor is all flammable. " I also live in Florida so I can relate to that so hard.
every evening i find myself so indulged watching your videos, love your experiments! Neil UK
I made an ashtray for my mom in ceramics class in high school. The teacher refused to let me fire it in the kiln because it was smoking related. So I decided to try to fire it in the oven at home. I had noticed that the glaze liquid in class looked and smelled just like Elmer's glue. I coated the ash tray in glue and fired it in the oven at 400 degrees for 4 hours. It actually worked perfectly. The glue dried clear, shiny and smooth, just like glass. The ashtray made a nice "tink" sound when tapped so I know it worked.
Can you show is how you made those lamps? They look really cool.
Pause at 3:24 (the transition part) for laughs
Dude living the dream with that welding table. People underestimate how fantastic it really is to have a table and vise that DO NOT BUDGE AT ALL. Good stuff man!
I love how much nature is in your house!!
You need to rename your self the front yard scientist
Damn man, where do you live? Not adress, but where-ish? Love the Trees and location. Really nice place you have there, with great potential. I'm really jealous!
SantianoBe
He lives in Florida
Welcome to Jurassic Park.
SantianoBe yeah Florida
EG Gamer life uh uh uh finds a way.
I would place him here in Southwest Florida somewhere between Tampa & Fort Myers
I really liked how your 'Key Stone Scientist' annotation fit right inside the oven lid... Like a monitor or something... and the video is just fab as usual... 😀
I can't believe how incredibly smart and handy you are, I really love your videos.
The backyard now maybe the frontyard scientist can you please try casting an musical instrument?
(◕‿◕)
What was the external temp of the oven at temp?
How long did it take to reach temperature ?
What is the wattage of each coil?
Nice job !
Thanks for the tip on HWI. I'll have to check them out being in Florida myself
this is cool, i would like to make one for ceramic firing glazes!! deff gonna look into this! thx for idea & great video!!
lol we use that same oven in my house it was made back in the 60 and remodled in the 70s i think its the originol oven
I clicked on this video not knowing that I was early
Your yard and house is absolutely amazing!
You are truly the best "science channel" on youtube, GREAT job man !!
So you're making a gun?
That's what it looked like to me too.
He's making a Halo gun with a 40w laser in it.
so what its not illegal in Florida
That wasnt a gun you wouldnt mold a solid triger handle and everything in one go like he did probably just made a nice desk peice to look at
It really did look like a gun, but i doubt it was a real gun, being aluminum it would blow up in ur hand lol
I got a chicken nugget ad
at least i still get ads! I guess ill take what i can get :P haha
Ads are just a myth
What's an ad?
A Flying Blin - A baby add
oh more scince
Awesome fun afternoon project nice new place to Congratz man!
i just love love love all your videos. i watch some with my kids so that hopefully some day they be inspired by you. very educational and dangerous lol. keep them coming.
What 3d printer do you have?
Wgesh8 I would like to know also
Rip off... I'm here for the backyard scientist not the front yard one

Chimp Squad I mean it's the same guy and the same concept
Fun and useful project. I enjoyed watching.
Oh!! You uploaded this on my birthday!!
I think I subscribed a few days after!
That's crying out for a handle on the door. A long handle.
+Maxx B - and a heavy one! The door is too light and won't stay open nowThe door handle broke off when I was loading it into my car and I haven't found anything suitable for a replacement yet
Found!? Who are you again??
Make one, man! ;)
Make it a whole video. :P
Now you can cast a new one :)
"Now that it's my pool I don't feel like pouring molten aluminum in it". What the hell man, if the previous pool was NOT your property you should treat it with even MORE respect than your own property.
Good idea and the elements are insulated and designed for heat.
I just saw the hot wheels video not knowing about it! I must know the details on that! Simply awesome!!
Hey were you on street science? I saw an episode about shooting oobleck and I swear it was your garden and you..
Yeah I'm pretty sure he was in that episode, not sure if it was his graden though
Could I potentially used this solely as a foundry? I really don't want to spend 500+ dollars on a foundry if I don't have to. It seems as if the oven would be extremely hot just to be around when it opens.
+Shadow Runner it could. It melts aluminum easily. It's easier, cheaper, and quieter to use than a gas foundry
but I bet it destroys your electricity bill.
Instead of using a clay graphite crucible, I have seen people use fire extinguishers. Do you think using a steel bucket would work also? Or is it just too thin?
Your garage is giving me Flash backs to Fallout 4, like damn, what mod are you using XD
i need to build one of these so i can more easily fire my clay pots and other artworks. thanks for the video and links.
So your name is gonna be TheFrontyardSientist now?
Garage maybe...?
Mr Sanik funny but makes more sense actually
combine water and caesium
and if u have some 2 plutonic quarks
lachlain banton yessssssss XD
lachlain banton do you want us to all for did you see the size of that explosion we already have to deal with yellow stone and you want him to turn the Americas in a crate?
Crater
Waba Luba dub dub
This is actually incredibly cool. Can you make some more videos like this one?
Excellent conversion
I think the pieces into a gun
Can you use it to harden clay?
That's actually a fantastic idea, backyards of course. At first this guy was so so but he keeps growing on me... You have a brain and are able to share ideas with this web. Lucky and very nice work here.
Next get some machinery such as: Vertical Mill, Horizontal Lathe, Drill Press... Sky's the limit on what you could produce. Very cool and nice new Fla Spread.
Peace, Martin aka fla playa.
It's a good idea to do this, to recycle old ovens. And the space in the oven is greater than the smaller kilns. I'll try this at home. Thanks! I think I still need another one for brass that goes to a higher temp, but for aluminum this seems good. Or one could the refit you suggest.
3d printing a gun???!
Mohammed Abdulghani that was a lower for a 40w laser halo gun
I'm going to school and today is my science exam =(
You do good!!! Umran Sheikh
Umran Sheikh same
Have you prepared for it
Umran Sheikh I love science
Neymarr _ got back from school my exam was awsome! =3
You can use masking tape as guideline when cutting with a cut off wheel. Works pretty good. Easy to see and protects surrounding paint. Remove after filing.
You're every backyard scientist idol.
Are you making a gun 0-0
You should start a side channel for these instructional videos
Because you like them, or don't like them? haha
Im actually curious. I know a lot of people just want to see me blow stuff up, but Im always doing projects like this and dont think people want to see them / dont want to clutter my channel with small things.
definitely just keep building your main channel. This was good content and opens the door to more videos and possibilities
TheBackyardScientist I personally perfer more experiments. But you have a huge following so I'm sure a sizeable amount of people want videos like this so they can try out their own experiments! Another channel would help keep both camps happy. Keep up the great work!
No, 99% of viewers will not try this at home. Anyone who tries this at home already had the intentions of doing so before watching this video.
I like watching things like this because i will never go out of my way to transform an old oven into a kiln. Its kinda like watching "how its made"
Al Capone Fair enough. But this video hits a different niche than his other videos. So a different channel might make sense.
I've always wanted to make kiln, Sweet project by the way!
It looks really good! That was a very good idea!
I am only 40 minutes away from the place to buy fiber blanket
you could make a f*cking gun !!!
Made out of aluminum? You could make a better gun out of wood and plumbing parts. That is a model of a gun, not an actual gun. Plus, the tolerances on a firearm like the that wouldn't be good for casting, I think.
Dr Caubalth yeah i could make a gun for $35 in the plumbing isle of the hardware store. It's not hard man
I will always watch a TheBackyardScientist upload, best videos around!
When I get a house, I will do this. Thanks Backyard Scientist!
This guy acts like anyone is going to do this at home
I plan to build one for glass work, kilns ain't cheap! Especially at this size.
Same actually I’m in the process of ordering all the parts for this exact build
Art teachers get so triggerd when you call them kilns when there pronounced kill (But spelled kilns.) Make up your mind already Art teachers! XD
TheMoosher XXX
Haha
Me-" Hey guys im going to make a Kıll!"
People-" What? o.o"
Me-" K-I-L-N"

The Gullible Skeptic *they're
Some pronounce it "kil" and some "kiln", neither is incorrect (the spelling is kiln though).
Kiln is the more traditional or historical pronunciation
Angga Djaputra 😈
I built a similar kiln in a barbeque grill shell for annealing glass. Just wool on the inside though, no bricks. Fun times. I like the idea of using an oven because of the door and square shape. My grill shape wastes a lot of space.
Shout out to HWI! I use their Versa-Tech MW 55 for hard-facing and I love it. Very durable. My local distributors are some cool guys too.
His confident level for his house has skyrocketed since this

Really neat project! I'm surprised at how hot it got, considering it's maybe only 2kW maximum. A proper kiln that size would be something like 4-5kW. BTW, those heating elements aren't happy operating at high temperatures for a long time - I used to use a cooker element as a crucible furnace, but it burned out after half a dozen melts.
Everything reminds me of one of those stage props Rush used for their live shows for some reason. (R30-Snakes and Arrows tour era)
Amazing stuff.
