BEST Sites for ARTIST Reference PHOTOS (2022)

- Most artists are usually on the lookout for the next thing to paint, so good artist reference photos are essential.
But in the vast world of the internet, which are the best sites for artist reference photos? In this video, I share some that I use on a fairly regular basis. At the same time, I talk about what I look for within a photo, before I even consider using it. Nothing worse than setting your heart on a particular photo, getting all the permissions, drawing it out etc etc. Then zooming into the eyes and seeing that they are blurry, and that you really can't see the detail that you need to paint a realistic interpretation. I hope this video helps you find the next 'stand out image' that you really can't resist painting.

Thank you Leslie 🤓
Beautiful ❤
Thank you! 😊
I always ask permission then acknowledge them in the comments plus sending them a digital copy with many thanks etc.
This is spot on Kerree, as you know the sort of thing I also do. It's easy to forget how much time and experience it takes, in order to achieve the high quality photographs these photographers take, it's an art form in itself. 😀
You have done a true public service here! Thanks so much. Question: when a photographer gives you permission to use their work, do you - does one - note that on the painting? And where? Appreciate your response 😊
Hi, I don't write this on the painting, but I do contact every photographer whose photograph I use, with a digital copy of the painting. Plus, any video tutorials we write, we also mention the photographer there with a link to their websites.
As long as we show gratitude for the lovely work they do, that to me is the main thing. Paul 🎨
Thanks again. I have an acquaintance who is an amazing photographer - professional. She has given me permission to use as a source her bird photos with proper acknowledgment. I have been wondering just how to do that before I begin the work. Now I know courtesy of your help. Many thanks 🙏
@@horsefanDunn Thank you, I think this can differ in what method you wish to credit the photographer, but to me, the more credit you can give them the better. After all, if it wasn't for them, you wouldn't be working on that painting project. 😁
Thank you. Are there specific websites that are really good at seeing watercolor paintings? I haven’t been looking for new/current set since the early days of Deviant Art. But I know communities change and move around, like when many professional artists left Instagram and moved to 500px, and when Ello tried to become Twitter for artists (which was not nearly as successful as 500px). I’m new to watercolor and trying to get a better grasp on the variety of projects currently being created and it’s been kind of hard to find on social media searches where the sheer number of beginners and hobbiests crowd out the more advanced or avant-garde/non-traditionalist artists (which is great for looking for tutorials and skills as a beginner but isn’t feeding the need for awe and marvel level inspiration).
Hi Selah, to be honest with you, I have joined that many arty websites. The one I have been a member for many years is wetcanvas.com and is brilliant for a wide variety of mediums. If you are not a member there then it's certainly worth popping along, it is completely free as well. Paul 🎨
Thank you Paul, very helpful.
You're welcome Carmella, I'm glad it helps. 😀
Thank you
