    Smh at all these people hating on U2 & the Edge. U2 admires the Clash more than almost anyone, the Edge was a great choice to induct the Clash. Both are great bands, let's stop with the hate & just enjoy the music

    Wish Joe was there..nice words from the Edge..not a fan of U2 but I respect their respect for the Clash..RIP Joe Strummer , Punk Rock Warlord....and much respect to Simonon , Headon, Chimes and the sometimes overlooked and forgotten genius of the Clash, Mick Jones ( he wrote most of the brilliant music that Joe could spread his gospel to)

    The Clash are awesome, one of my favourites is What's My Name. Really don't understand the hate for U2, they are very respectful of everyone that has gone before them as well as everyone that has come after. They have been wrongly looked at for so long that people just jump on the bandwagon for hating them.

    There was a quote, I forgot who said it, that went, the sex pistols told people that things are shitty while the clash said that things are shitty, but what are you going to do about it. It was along those lines. The point is, punk is about fighting for what you believe in. All the sex pistols did was build punk stereotypes while the clash got out of that and truly defined what it is today. The Clash are punk in the purest definition.

    heard it all before, but U2 are a great band and they're success + influence on others shows that! the fact that their guitarist got to induct the most legendary band ever The Clash into the Hall of Fame says enough! The Edge isn't trying to make U2 look good in this speech he's simply showing the The clash's influence on others + what better example to use than himself? People should put as much effort into stopping world hunger as they do in slagging off U2, they'd be no such thing as poverty!

    To me, The Clash were oh-so much more than just a rock & roll band or a punk band -- they were, indeed and irrefutably-so, both; but, Strummer and co. were influenced by so many other different genres of music from all over the world (and that's not hyberole), and they wove those influences together with standard rock & roll along with punk's aggression, intimacy, immediacy, reductionism and attitude. I largely credit my wildly-eclectic tastes in music (again, from all over the world) to them.
    Too bad Joe couldn't have lived just another couple/few years in order to have been there for the induction of his band into the R&R H.o.F.

    There's a lot of people quoting Henry Rollins usual derision of U2 regarding them as wanting to be The Clash. While most of what Rollins says concerning U2 or most things can be taken with a pinch of salt, U2 have never made any secret of the importance that The Clash and The Ramones had on them.
    There's a lot of digs at U2 for a video that's celebrating The Clash.

    "No question they gave the introduction speech to the right man" - I'm not denying U2 are immensely influenced by the Clash, but I don't like the way the Edge sort of found a way to include his band and musical work in the speech (the line about Sunday Bloody Sunday). Him and his buddy Bono always seem to find a way to try and make U2 seem like their the best band of all-time, when they are just huge egotistical showmen. I think EC would've done a better job at the speech, he knew Joe better.

    when a guy from a really pop group, call The Beatles (the master kings of Rock'n Roll) a "pop band"
    I like The Clash, but if they're #2 after the stones, where would be The Beatles and Led Zeppelin???
    (just to mention a few ones better than the stones and the clash...)
    one more thing THE POLICE. is way better than U2

    Mohawks in 1977? I think not!

    • @benduffy6219
      @benduffy6219 Před 7 lety

      Well, Travis Bickle had one in 1976 (which inspired Joe Stummer's own mohawk a few years later). :)

    • @beefheart1410
      @beefheart1410 Před 7 lety +3

      Ben Duffy Yes, Travis Bickle had one in 1976. The relevant Native American tribe probably had them in 1576. Sonny Rollins had one in 1956 and G.Is had them in 1966. But, as far as Punk goes, you didn't see the first Mohicans until late 79 or early 1980 and, by then Punk was over. Indeed, the Clash were just weeks away from being over when Strummer adopted the look in 1982 and it reflected the only time the band ever looked crap. The Mohican was never a haircut that had anything to do with Punk rock and was only adopted by the third generation "Johnny come lately's" who took their cues on "how to look Punk" from the daily mirror. This coincided with a massive dumbing down of Punk when, to be "Punk" you had to be stupid, look stupid, be off your face on cheap cider or bostik at all times (particularly if in public) and, if lucky, have an ugly dog on a rope as a fashion accessory. Other than Strummer's atypical faux pas when, as stated, he briefly sported the haircut in mid 82, not one other member of a first generation punk band (be they from the Uk, the USA or elsewhere) ever had the haircut and, as I say, neither did the "rank and file" Punk audiences until, at the earliest, 1979. It's a pity but the silly look of the Mohican style Punk will be the image that the general public will always associate with the Punk "image" when it couldn't be further from the truth.

      Very well said, and I was being tongue-in-cheek. For the same reason, I imagine that you probably rolled your eyes, as I did, when Eddie Vedder had a mohawk while inducting the Ramones into the Hall. Only more so, because not only did none of the Ramones ever have a mohawk, they actually had a signature hairstyle. :)

      @beefheart1410 Před 7 lety +1

      Ben Duffy yeah, you're right. As I say, it's a shame that the Mohican look will always be the image that the general public associates with Punk rock even though it had nothing to do with it as originally conceived. Indeed, leather, 'Brando' style bike jackets weren't part of the image until 1977. By that time, the scene had been around in the U.S for three years and, the U.k variant for almost eighteen months. I'm not sure where the Mohican came from vis a vis Punk?!? I'm fairly sure it was a London thing at the start but I'd be interested to know who started it. As I say, Punk was over by the time it appeared and I don't mean as a trendy scene for the cognoscenti, I mean more along the lines of it had become so dumbed down by that point that the original spirit was lost. Remember, in NYC and London Punk was quite an art school / bohemian / underground thing originally. The scandals created by The Pistols lead it into the hands of the tabloids and, what you end up with, three years later is this lowest common denominator, dumbed down, idea of what Punk was. As such, I always think that the Mohican wearing, "cider punk" scene owed more to the joke Punk caricatures created by Kenny Everett (Sid Snot), "Not The Nine O'clock News" ("Gob On You") and the tabloids than they did to The Clash or The Pistols.

    Neither The Clash, nor the Stones are the greatest rock and roll band of all time. That would be The Beatles. And The Beatles are far from my favorite band, but facts are facts. Anybody who thinks the Beatles were pop, quit listening after The Ed Sullivan Show. Use to like U2, but Edge and Bono are too full of themselves. They are more pop than the Beatles ever were. MTV made them famous.
