Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 2024 review: Cruiser | Does the best-selling family SUV better Honda CR-V?

  • The 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid is an almighty trendsetter. Back in 2019, mainstream hybrid SUVs were an unknown quantity in Australia, but then the low-emissions mid-sizer launched to unprecedented demand, which still hasn't eased some 4.5 years later.
That high level of interest in the RAV4 Hybrid has been for good reason, though, as it's one thoroughly impressive vehicle, managing to offer relatively low pricing, a long list of standard equipment, surprisingly good driving dynamics and, of course, high real-world efficiency.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft spends a week living with the RAV4 Hybrid's high-spec Cruiser 2WD variant to find out if it's still a strong performer in a sea of newer low-emissions mainstream family SUVs, including the Honda CR-V e:HEV and Nissan X-Trail ePower.

Thanks but I'd take a Honda ZR-V. Similar on-the-road price. Points in the RAV's favour are better value for money, ventilated seats, the sunroof and a bigger boot with a spare tyre. The Honda is (in my view) better finished, has a nicer dash and an arguably better hybrid system (spends more of it's time around town in electric mode). It has heated rear seats as well as front. No extra charge for any colour. Cheaper services at least for first five years with internet connectivity to on- line services thrown in. The outward view is excellent.

We have recently bought a 2020 model and are very pleased with it. We are getting
around 50mpg, which I don't think is too bad for an AWD vehicle.

By the way, it's an ecvt... It's a totally different technology than well known weak CVT!

      Amen brother!
The Toyota e-CVT uses permanently meshed gears in a planetary gear set. Motor/Generator 1 regulates the various speeds of the wheels, engine and the larger M/G2. M/G1 spins forward or backward at up to 7000rpm to provide the ratios and regenerative breaking at the front.
I noticed in my AWD that the rear wheels are powered briefly when starting from a standstill, even at gentle throttle. The Prius AWD (not sold in Australia) had this feature too. This gives more grip.
M/G2 provides plenty of torque and reasonable acceleration before the engine is required. I haven’t driven a recent Honda hybrid but their design philosophy had always been to emphasise the engine and not have a motor capable of moving the vehicle beyond car park manoeuvres.
I have no love of SUVs but I’m pleasantly surprised at how good my second hand Cruiser AWD is. Handling is great.

@@BradleyTemperley thanks! Also the rear wheels are powered when turning corners, I notice. It's an amazing setup, sophisticated yet reliable.

If you planin to buy my 25 probably you have to wait till 2028. Toyota australia currently is suing by lots of customer. There is no new car in Australia. They are just selling their car to some people who are trying to sell much much higher than recommended price.

Having had one on order for 18 months and then being told it would be over 2 years wait, I gave up and switched to the CRV Hybrid which came after 2 months. So glad I made the change. If you watch the US reviews on both models the conclusion seems to be the Honda is a better car all around. Don’t forget with the RAV 4 you get hit with the price increases while you are waiting.

I bought a new 2024 Honda CRV hybrid. I test drove the RAV4 and it’s nice but Honda I’d definitely built better. It feels better on the road and more like driving a higher end vehicle.
