This is a cover of a Sting song. One of my favorite Sting songs, in fact. I love this version better than the original. Probably my favorite harmonies from them after "Its Alright". I've already heard Ren do "Walking on the Moon", one of my favorite songs from The Police fronted by Sting. If Ren ever covers "Message in a bottle" or "Shape of my heart" my other two favorites, I might lose my dang mind. 😂

Just saw one on CZcams of him and Liv doing message in a bottle live on Brighton Beach. I did not find the sound quality great, though.
One of the main changes they make to the Sting one is switching the line "Confront your enemies, avoid them if you can" to "Befriend your enemies, confront them when you can". So much more Ren to try an unite where possible but speak out when necessary. I always liked the original but I prefer this one now, which is unusul as if I like the original I usually don't like covers as much.
Each artist in the band has their own magic. Amazingly they combine and the magic multiplies!
Yep, you're right Joe, this is a super cover! There's a simple little observation I love exactly 19s into the song, as Ren plays a double note he looks/smiles at Romain seemingly for approval, to which Romain gives an approving nod/grin back. I would bet some small change that when they were putting this together in rehearsal, Romain (being an equally accomplished guitarist), probably suggested the little piece! As some have mentioned, please take some time out to react or simply play for your enjoyment, Sting's superbly shot original, in New York. It's beautiful!

I imagine Ren & Romain have spoken about Django & maybe discovered his music together. Django only had 2 or 3 fingers on his left hand, but was an amazing guitarist. Ren mentions him in The Hunger, along with others who overcame major challenges.
You know how much Ren loves Sting and The Police so that love really shines through in this cover. I read that they changed the lyrics "befriend your enemies confront your friend when you can" (i'm paraphrasing coz the phone keyboard is a nightmare). A clever twist.

I might have to put in the original video during a live. Beautiful black and white video and the song has a completely different feel. There are also some lyrics left out as this is a shortened version. The original Bongo Bong also has a completely different feel also and the video is pretty wild.
Some lyrics left out, and the one lyric radically altered - "confront your enemies avoid them if you can" is Sting's original lyric. Ren sings "befriend your enemies confront them when you can" ... I prefer Sting's original lyric however I find it pretty cheeky of Ren to have written a different, equally illogical line (rather than replacing it with something less illogical/contradictory), silly goose.
@@rebeccaburnell9319 Well Ren has been known to flub lines here and there even with his own lyrics so who knows if it was intentional. Personally, I don't find either line illogical. They're kind of saying the same thing in slightly different ways. Sting-"confront your enemies, avoid them if you can". Don't go looking for your enemies but confront them if faced with them. I feel like Ren is saying the same thing in a more positive way "befriend your enemies, confront them when you can." Approach your enemies peacefully and, again, don't look for confrontation. But if confrontation is unavoidable, make sure you're ready for the confrontation. Only confront them when you're ready. But that's just my interpretation.

There's a quality to ren's voice in this song, specifically "in the way that I walk" that reminds me BIG TIME of kin/nik from Australian heavy rock group, Twelve foot Ninja. I think you'd enjoy some of their stuff if you want to step on yet another branch of genre bending.

Song written in honour of Quentin Crisp, a very English, quietly flamboyant gay writer.
This knowledge gives the lyrics more poignancy. Be yourself, no matter what they say. Homosexuality was illegal in the UK until the 60s & he must have fought his whole life against 'what they say'.
