RIP Pete, for anyone who isn't aware (I'm sure most are) he actually adlibbed this speech as he couldn't get the emotion across he wanted from the one written as part of the script. Some of the band in the film we're actual members of the the band in real life and it brought some of them to tears on set, likewise the audience....that, my dear friends, is a proper actor. God bless Pete.
one take, one message....but what a hell of a message wish I could be here in 100 years into the future, absolutely sure they will be still talking about this man and this film- yes it was his film alright!
They left out the bit where one of the band takes the trophy anyway. When the presenter objects that it was already refused, he says "Don't be daft" and strolls off with it.
Also the final words of the album at the end of Scapegoats! This film is fantastic, and I am actually new to it, but 'Tubthumper' is also a phenomenal album. Its brilliance was overshadowed because of the commercial success of the 'Tubthumping' single (which I'm glad they got), so if you mention the album or the band, it gets a chuckle these days, but start to finish, it is one of my favorite albums of all time. They definitely introduced me to this movie, but it took me a long time to get here!
The fact that this speech was scripted and acted is totally immaterial, every last word of it is true, truly inspirational and obviously heartfelt both by it's writer and by Pete Postlethwaite himself.
Pete Postlethwaite will be missed. There's a reason Spielberg called him the best actor in the world. Not sure too many will miss Margaret Thatcher though......
no bugger with a heart soul or working brain cell will no, good riddance, but her nasty legacy lives on in every Tory voter Brexit voter and mean spirited bastard that walks the face of the Earth. ps Pete lovely man one our very best actors, and that is something to celibate as we have produced many brilliant actors through the years... Albert Finny , Alan Bates, Julie Christie , among my favourites over the years. but Pete is missed , Thatcher is not...
@James Henderson deindustrialisation happened because we joined the common market, and also a long story to do with the worldwide economic system being formed around the dollar in the 70s, which involved Germany cementing itself (with France's approval) as the industrial capital of Europe. Globalisation has since proved to be an even greater catalyst for this. Every governing party, red blue or yellow, has agreed with the state of direction since the early 70s
Brilliant speech. Brilliant actor. Superb film. Going to watch again today, with poignancy with a matter of weeks to go before Britain's last deep coal mine shuts at Kellingley. Sad.
Not only Thatcher, the whole of bloody London, they will spend tens of millions refurbishing a London theatre and close a children's hospital up north to pay for it. Bastards
My god! As a Welsh man with ancestors who not only fought in wars, but worked in the mines to finish off. There are not many films I could watch that could bring me to melting point. I am a former Soldier who fought hard and nearly lost my life. My words are dedicated to the miners who sadly lost heir lives, and to the ones that lived and suffered with terrible health. Bless you all!
22 f*****g years since i saw this movie for the first time! And what happen now? I still crying like a baby during this scene! Such a powerful movie! (NB: I'm french and I do know my english isn't good so please, don't be harsh.)
One of the greatest 'political' movies I've seen. Great music, the towering talent of the late Pete Postlethwaite, the sweet loveliness of Tara Fitzgerald and the anger every decent human being must feel at the callous destruction of the lives of ordinary people for ideological reasons. Capitalists, Marxists ... all a thoroughly bad lot.
***** If you can't see that all systems that feed on the little people to feed small elites are basically the same. The shpiel differs, the greed is the same.
@@Skyscraper44able you dont understand marxism you silly person. Socialism is the answer. The destruction of capitalism is the solution. it's not hard. You don't just go ah all isms are bollocks. Doesn't matter now we're all fucked but still have a look.
Pete Postlethwaite was an amazing actor! You’ll recognize the lines of his speech from 0:24 to 0:34 as they were sampled at the beginning of the album version of Chumbawamba’s 1997 hit “Tubthumping”. However, what you most likely don’t know is that the band also sampled the part of the speech from 1:45 to 2:15, which can be heard at the end of the album’s closing track, “Scapegoat”.
I’ve been doing a lot of digging to figure out where all the outros came from, so glad I found out essentially two of them in one film! The knowledge of the whereabouts for the others have been very difficult to find. Like it took me forever to find the outro in the song “Outsider” came from the film “Raining Stones”. Hopefully I’ll uncover them all. It’s a fun little rabbit hole I got myself into! 😅
@@tylerfromtexas6556 'Tubthumper' is one of the greatest albums ever - I've been obsessed with it since it came out, and to this day I regularly jam it start to finish. It is one of those that is best experienced as the album in its entirety.
Honestly, listening to that album again and seeing how heavily _brass_ features in almost all of the tracks, one has to wonder if the whole album isn't a sort of subtle nod to this film.
I read that this speech wasn't rehearsed in front of the other cast members prior to filming it here: you can see how powerful it is by looking at everyones faces
and still is today , and always will be as long as the rich politicians line their pockets with working class hard earned cash, and our country is run by a mini trump!!!! RIP Pete you were the greatest!!!!
I didn't see the movie until years after Chumbawamba's ubiquitous era - imagine my shock when I found my old Tubthumper CD one day and stuck it in the stereo, and immediately recognized the sample of this speech! So glad for the reminder to this day of such profound words. Rest in power, Pete.
Following this scene,he takes his "lads " on the town which is an open bus ride through London,"Houses of Parliament",..and the final moments of the film are Danny( Pete) closeup, riding,.the emotions of the film summed up on his face ,without a word, just that face ...fade out...wow.
Much respect to the late, great Pete Postlethwaite for killing it in this scene especially and also throughout the whole film, but everyone involved in the making of this film also gave it everything they had to give. The writing, directing, cinematography, music, locations and acting from everyone were all top notch. In fact I'd be willing to bet that the catering staff on set probably provided the best tea and sandwiches they've ever made, because I get the impression that everyone involved poured their heart and soul into this film.
As a son of a minor during the strike, I know the pain that was caused to my parents and community. I am from Rhymney South Wales where the young minors threw the concrete block off the bridge and killed the taxi driver. The pit closures are still felt and an area destroyed by the Government. This film still tugs at my heart strings and makes me shed a tear every time I see it.
A good day to remember this. Instead of a declining industry being managed, communities were shattered, lives lost, families torn apart - all so the King Bitch could make a political point.
Bloody Margaret Thatcher was given a quasi state funeral that cost the tax payer £6 million. She the woman who used to curtesy so deeply to the Queen she nearly fell over and they laughed at her. Wonderful film that only the Brits can do well. Very recognisable cast. Pete was a superb actor.
Marvellous actor. Terry Pratchett always said that Pete Postlethwaite was the actor he saw in the role of Samuel Vimes and I can see why. What a shame we've lost them both and that vision will never be realised.
It's certainly one of the most beautiful and powerfull social movie that i ever seen in my life. A movie like our british friends (i'm french) know to do. M. tatcher impulsed a terrible war against workers in Great Britain during the 80' years. Now this politic, who advantage the rich peoples against the poor peoples, is extended to all Europe. We have to be strongers against these reactonary politics. I perfectly remember the coal strike in UK, it was in 1983, maybe 1985. I was young, my father was a miner too. I was young, and i gave my pocket money to french trade unions for britain strikers. Not so much, but if all french children gave their pocket money...
I worked in a steel rolling mill with a youthful Peter Postlethwaite in the mid-60s. He didn't stay long but while he did, he grafted and sweated with the rest of us. Nobody then knew what ambitions he had. But he did have a taste of what it was like to be working class in those now distant days. No fortnights in Spain for us then.
This was an amazing and most memorable very emotional speeches I have ever heard because it was and still is the truth about mine closures amongst other places and lives being torn apart and people who worked in the industry losing their jobs by what was and still is going on to this day and beyond its so true a very strong and true message

I get knocked down but I get up again you'll never be able to keep me down
No ? what the f**k are you talking about?

I can't hear the words "Truth is I thought it mattered. I thought that music mattered" without detecting a rhythm within them.
Heartbreaking and only touches the surface of the damage caused by Thatchers government!
Pete Postlethwaite was a decent man and a very fine actor. I'm so glad he let us enjoy his beautiful talent. Rest in peace.
