Former EPA Employees Reveal What Working For Trump’s EPA Was Like (HBO)

  • Over the past year, more than 700 EPA employees have quit their jobs or taken retirement buyouts. According to Steve Hopkins, who worked at the EPA for 15 years, that’s unprecedented.
    Betsy Southerland is one of the EPA employees who left the agency last year. She laments the way Administrator Scott Pruitt and political appointees cut career EPA employees out of major policy decisions.
    Environmental regulations are just part of what the EPA does to help communities, says Mustafa Santiago Ali, who quit his job at the agency in March after serving as the head of the EPA’s environmental justice program. Agency employees also build trust with marginalized communities who need help dealing with environmental contamination. “That's why we need to have a strong EPA. Because when we don't, we weaken our country,” Ali told VICE News. “We have to address these public health issues and these environmental issues, if we truly want to have our country to be all that it's supposed to be.”
    To find just how the EPA has been doing in Trump and Pruitt’s first year, VICE News gathered around a campfire with four employees who left the agency in 2017, and one current union representative. The result was a frank discussion between former federal employees who worked at the agency for decades - fueled by a marshmallow roast.

      People where outraged, but Republicans pushed the pick through anyway. They rushed it through. There was a cache of information that Pruitt had illegally withheld and that a judge had ordered him to release...but Republicans declined to delay the nomination vote by a few days until after that information came out. We were mad, but powerless.

  • @WindFireAllThatKindOfThing

    Alot of you armchair pundits who know nothing about the Environmental/HazMat biz think the EPA is some giant organism. I worked HazMat for years, and the EPA isn't who shows up in 48 of the states when someone fucks up the neighborhood and your favorite fishing hole because your local bodyshop flushed their paint thinner into the sewer or creek. It's your state DEQ. Same people who do emissions checks on your cars. They have primacy. That means THEY are in charge. And they meet or exceed the EPA federal guidelines. So even if the administration neuters the EPA at the federal level, the state DEQ's still hold all the policing power, and have for a long, long time.

    • @contracostacountyclimatele811
      @contracostacountyclimatele811 Před 6 lety

      Many statutes are not delegated to the states.
      Many fines, inspections, policy, and federal standards are just that: federal only.
      Including your drinking water standards. Unless some states chose to have more stringent levels.

    • @WindFireAllThatKindOfThing
      @WindFireAllThatKindOfThing Před 6 lety +1

      Yeah, that's not true. EPA does alot of the study work on major waterways, but the enforcement and inspections are DEQ. If DEQ has an inter-state issue, or a major company that is crossing state lines, then they call the Feds just like your local cops would call the FBI. But when it comes to who's visiting the reservoirs and companies that have outflow to the rivers and air quality, it's DEQ is who shows up like the boogie man and inspects your environmental program for compliance with 40 CFR. The whole reason they get primacy in most states in the first place is specifically BECAUSE they have more stringent levels

      I protest! Trump's intrusion on the EPA and on EPA's directives, serves as a sign that the primary cause of climate change is the 'Global Economic Model' GEM,
      and it's incorrect definition of profit. Technology is the indirect cause of climate change. We need a new GEM that supports a new definition of profit, and this 'profit'
      definition must map well with nature's economy. In nature, we have been paid in full, in advance, and our job is to gain sustenance without going into Overshoot.
      I recommend this definition: Profit = our gratefulness and loving care for our Environment, and for the sustenance that it provides to all of us.
      Clearly, this definition of profit does require a new GEM.
      The central part of the new Global Economic Model should be the EPA. EPA members will vote on the best 'Profit' definition that states sustenance
      is our only actual 'gain' without which we can't live, and states that the environment is our only source of sustenance.
      As the central hub of the new GEM, EPA members will establish, by vote, all directives related to both, the GEM and climate rescue strategies.
      Here are just some rough ideas of what the EPA directives might be:
      1.) Population: Initially we need a one child per family directive.
      2.) In place of income, jobs would have an 'equivalency rating'. Some jobs are still more important and more difficult than others.
      3.) All equivalency ratings will increase at the same time if and when the environment becomes healthier. The lowest EquivRate must still be livable.
      4.) Everyone who can work will be able, and required, to get jobs. No more expenses, so no more cutting jobs to reduce expenses; thus, virtually no more homelessness.
      5.) No manufacturing of useless and unnecessary products. All products will be scrutinized by various rating methods.
      6.) Whenever possible products should last a lifetime and or be easily upgradable, so we don't buy the same products repeatedly.
      7.) EPA will direct "Work Force Flow". Example: Shoe manufacturer will produce 100yearLife shoes for 3 years, then reduce output to about 1/10 of full capacity, and
      the majority of shoe employees will be shifted to other work assignments by the EPA. Employees still keep their EquivRate in-between jobs.
      I know that this is just a rough outline of what we must do, but it's a good starting point.
      This is our Ark. Please help build it! Questions, suggestions and any comments for or against this idea will be very deeply appreciated. Thank you!

      My thoughts exactly. I'm a middle of the road kind of guy and the war between the 2 major parties fascinates and saddens me. It used to be about representing what was best for the citizens but has devolved into almost a sporting event with just 2 teams constantly fighting each other just trying to win. It has absolutely nothing to do with the people anymore. The prevailing mentality is even more interesting. Again I am a middle of the road guy and have already expressed my opinion of the current state of politics in America, but as a rational, logic seeking person, definitely the more unhinged and scary of the 2 sides is definitely the left. I mean, the hypocrisy is astounding. I have never seen a more hateful, slanderous, more disgusting and hypocrital group of people in my life. For those who are not keenly aware when Trump got elected, one of his critics, Kathy Griffin (I hear she's a comedian although I find her more annoying than funny) decided it would be a good idea to pose for pictures holding a bloody severed head in the image of Donald Trump. That was probably the most disgusting, distasteful, and disrespectful displays I have ever seen. Was she condemned by the public? Of course not. Could you imagine if someone did that on the right when Obama was elected? This is just a tiny example of the behavior of the left and the hypocrisy involved. They claim outrage over those who are hateful and derogatory, yet they themselves are the absolute most hateful and derogatory ones in this country. How do people justify being against hate while simultaneously spewing hate themselves?

Thank you!

      As the Central part of the new Global Economic Model the EPA will become an enormous institution that will always need more employees; thus, there will always be jobs available that are involved with caring for the environment. These jobs will have high EquivRates. It's ironic that the objects we produce are the "expense" in this Global Economic Model because they cause damage to the environment both by their presence in the environment and by their production method.

      Simply put the EPA is a federal body that writes guidelines, they don't respond in the field, that's left to local Hazmat folks, or DEQ agencies in the state, which also help establish state environmental guidelines. Reduced guidelines at the federal level = people being offered early retirement packages. The EPA is NOT, I repeat NOT some band of people washing oil off of ducks, they are the ones saying "you should wash the oil off of those ducks, and pay a big fine for spilling it in the first place."

    Government employees getting drug tested breaks down trust? I guess I'm the most distrustful person on the planet. I'm a gvt employee and I get tested constantly. What makes them special that they don't have to follow the same rules as the rest of us?

    • @vonsuthoff
      @vonsuthoff Před 6 lety

      schweatty.... First, I'm sure those people wouldn't want you to drug test without a really good reason. It's another freedom given up... I'm 60 years old. I don't drink or do drugs, but it's like considering me or you guilty, and having to prove our innocence before there is any call for it. Why not randomly alcohol and drug test automobile drivers on occasion, without swerving or getting into an accident? Hey, I don't drink... but I don't believe that randomly having to prove my innocents for no reason is a good idea.
      I can see having to take drug test if you are a heavy equipment operator or some other potentially dangerous job, but otherwise I believe there should be a good reason to randomly and very personally subject a drug test on anyone. It is invasive... and very untrusting!
      Same with the Patriot Act. I consider myself a patriot, but make no doubt about it, the government has taken away many of our freedoms when they enacted this decree!

      Why not engage those critical thinking skills and investigate why the Flint water crisis occurred, what the EPA's role in monitoring and enforcement was, and how they could have prevented it. The answers should lead you to the conclusion that the EPA needs more power to enforce their standards, and hold responsible those that don't. Furthermore, if you kept looking, you'd find that they are grossly understaffed for the amount of work that they need to do, which leads to safety problems that aren't caught until they become disasters.
