Backwater Exploring On The South Delta! Tidal Fishery Tricks!

- Come along as we explore the forgotten South Delta! Trailering overland with a stranger, navigating through hyacinth-choked canals, and catching fish is all part of a day deep in the extreme Southern reaches of the California Delta. There's a reason most anglers don't venture this far South, but today we're with Matt Leverich and he knows how to navigate the maze.
We ventured out on the water planning to "junk fish" our way through the South Delta. As the sun got overhead we found a strong frog bite but in true Delta fashion, it wouldn't last long. Soon the tide was out and the winds came in and we were forced to adapt. The day ended with one of the most incredible flurries of juvenile striper and largemouth I've ever seen on this fishery. We included a small fraction of the catches as dozens upon dozens of fish bit cast after cast for over an hour!

So refreshing to see some tidal action for once on literally any top fishing channel. As someone who lives off the Chesapeake Bay this was great to see. I don't want to downplay the great work a lot of people put in on lakes but man, get into some tidal water where the fish can move around so much easier and you really have to know your stuff.
Oh for sure! We lived on the CA Delta for years and tide chasing was 95% of our fishing. Unfortunately we don't get to do it as much as we'd like these days.

With Clear Lake water so low all but one ramp are closed. The Delta has become fishery of choice. Glad to see you guys wading through juveniles looking for a better quality. I was beginning to think I just did not have “right bait” and was only attracting littles. There is a big one in there somewhere. Thanks for posting. Safe travels.

That’s awesome, Matt has taken me down to that area too. I’d never been there before either. We were able to CAREFULLY drive through that dam at the time.
I know that stretch of water well, ~10 miles of native river, awesome video as always, thanks for sharing. In the winter all that hyacinth will come downstream and clog the main river for hundreds of yards, after the wing dams are removed. It’s amazing to watch them build these dams in a couple of weeks each summer then remove them completely in winter. I usually catch a limit or two when I’m idling into the marina like you guys did. Fun stuff.
Yeah it’s big money for the state that’s for sure. Man you’re right though I’m a heavy equipment operator by trade and they have it down to a science

I Fish those waters a ton. Going back in those waters when the damn isn’t up can be super sketchy on low tide. I wouldn’t recommend going back there on low tide if your not familiar with the water.
Seems like the stripers are always bustin right there. Same thing happens for us going back to the ramp we see em busting right there. Always get em there on the rattle trap.
Used to have a camp just on the other side of that dam. Careful to all anglers that go on the other side of that damn sand bars are all over 20 to 1 foot just like that. So heads up, have fun all hope to see ya out there

Would you guys be open to sharing some more info regarding the conditions during your filming on your videos? A widget in the bottom corner of the video with the info or even in your video descriptions would be awesome. Specifically I am curious to see the water temps, air temps and time of day for your videos. Since we all live in different parts of the country this will help me to dial in when techniques are more effective. Once again, thanks for all of the information that you already share!

Hi guys, I have been watching tactical bassin for a long time now and you guys are so knowledgeable! I appreciate all the great info my lake, lake rhodhiss in North Carolina has striper and I try to catch them in the fall while I'm fishing for large and smallmouth but have only been successful on top with walking baits and whopper plopped . So my question is how to I target the striper when they aren't boiling up? Thanks for your time

Buddy had some big cajones jumping on pad like that in all that hyacinth and slop. I was nervous, not gonna lie.
That’s how you do it, get up on plane and power thru. We run 200-300 yards of shore to short hyacinth at 50+, there’s no hard stuff in there…usually.

No, that's a travel rod that I use when I fly somewhere instead of drive. Its a BPM Customs 7'3" XH custom built. You can find them on IG.

There are a ton but they're farther North. There are Spotted bass as well.
Caught a few Spots in the deep south where the boys fished today even a few lost salmon 😋
