    RuneLite is the most popular client for Old School RuneScape. Without it, many of you might not even be playing the game. But it wasn’t that long ago that Jagex threatened RuneLite’s creator with a lawsuit if he didn’t take the client down. This threat was one of the biggest mistakes Jagex ever made in Old School RuneScape’s history, and the reason why is actually going to shock you.

      i tried forcing myself to play the c++ client exclusively. I lasted like 4 months and quit using it after months of a bug with selecting items wasn't fixed. There were small things like massive QoL plugins being unavailable of course, but something so core being bugged is unacceptable. If they couldnt fix something so simple, I concluded there will be worse things in the future. The high frame rate feels really smooth to play on so it's a huge shame. Perhaps it's bittersweet positive thing that they didn't acquire osbuddy

    the greatest thing about runelite is that you get to choose what you do and don't want to use. I think this is one of the biggest factors that has led to the widely loved self-driven experience that OSRS provides--whether it be to restrict yourself in ridiculous ways, give yourself waypoints to get you to the action faster, or make afking easier, every player has a different image of how they want to interact with the game and they can force the game to reflect that with the many options that runelite provides. And if runelite doesn't provide it by default, there's literally hundreds of additional community plugins you can install.

    • @hemmoau
      @hemmoau Před 8 dny +5

      100% I love being able to use menu entry swapper, which most traditionalists would call cheating, but don't want to ruin my experience with quest helper. Runelite lets you choose and since Runescape is basically singleplayer it's inconsequential.

    • @christophern5226
      @christophern5226 Před 6 dny +4

      I mean, there’s no discussing “principles of the issues” if differing positions aren’t taken.
      As in, if people do discuss “the principles of the issues” they’d surely be taking a position on either side, right? Otherwise there would be no discussion. Just agreement.

    • @chriskim8022
      @chriskim8022 Před 6 dny

      @@christophern5226 yes, that is called compromise in which both parties can win.
      Jagex's main interest was security concerns. They did not share this concern with the RuneLite dev, and merely maintained a hardline position of taking down RuneLite or lawsuit.
      Had Jagex shared their interest in preventing bot clients copying RuneLite's deobfuscation method, many more options would have been on the table that both parties could have pursued. Legal should be involved if negotiations fail, but it seems like legal was spearheading negotiations as seen in the black and white strategy they pursued.
      Because Jagex maintained a position of take down RuneLite or lawsuit, they received:
      1. Community backlash
      2. A proliferation of bot clients
      3. A shitty client that got quickly penetrated
      None of their interests were ever addressed.
      Had they shared their security concerns, RuneLite's deobfuscation method could've gone private. Proliferation of bot clients would've still happened with or without RuneLite's existence of course. But they wouldn't receive the backlash from the community.

It was one of the few non combat activities that required some form of skill.

      There's a reason why so many folks play RSPSs, it has nothing to do with clients. OSRS was dying due to a lack of content being added to the game and gained as many players as it has now due to said content being added regardless of how some feel about it. I'm sure there's a very small percentage of new players who haven't played in 07 or before who would refuse to play if they didn't have access to custom clients but they have no impact on the playerbase.

    Not a damn chance I'd be playing OSRS without Runelite, maybe when it was newer and had less functionality but even playing on mobile is mainly ruined by the lack of all my plugins. Jagex would be delusional if they ever again thought taking down Runelite and trying to add their own versions of functionality would lead to profit. Even to shill their own premium service like in RS3.. I doubt that service would make as much money as they'd lose in mass un-subscriptions and loss of community faith. That's not even mentioning the utter shit-storm online and harassment they'd get.

    I was totally using OSBuddy when I last played. I didn't feel like it was untrustworthy even though I knew some people thought so. Mostly I could see just see farther with better camera control, could get a better framerate with limited hardware, and had things on the keyboard that otherwise I'd need to juggle menus to get. I could prayer flash much easier during fights and it was something I did a lot once I learned how much I could extend any combat training or slayer tasks. I didn't use any weird solvers or anything. Then again I just need a reference image and I can do sliding puzzles by reflex ever since the secret puzzle in the ship in the original Final Fantasy.

    I thought this was like way back then but then I saw a familiar post about third party clients and it just hit me that I was a new player at that time. There are so many near misses that could have heavily hurt OSRS in the long term. This is one of the few cases of a near miss that would have benefitted the game. Fundamentally, there should only be one official client. Plugins massively change how the game is played, and the developers have little to no control over it. If Jagex handled the situation just a little better, OSRS would be just that little bit better

  • @elfarcherdv

    I'm just gonna say that jagex has absolutely no idea how yo deal with bots if clients are what they perceive to be their only threat. As a kid my older brother used the default client with some quite advanced bots on his comp that used mostly color but a small a small amount of reflection(not injection) to figure our details and allow for many camera angles. He never told me the details of how he sold the scripts but I will say he was never wanting for money or a job when we were kids.
    Later on he used a client called SCAR but didn't like it and joined a group that made a competitor called SIMBA

  • @FumblsTheSniper
    @FumblsTheSniper Před 3 dny

    I avoided playing with people for years because OSB was so popular and everyone knew you were able to pay-to-win. Something not mentioned is there was a good period of time where you could pay OSB “premium devs” for access to their special plugins. These are the “occasionally jagex reached out to have them remove something” mentioned, those being botting scripts sold by friends of the owner of OSB who were/are all botters.
