Another Editor’s Note:
Dune Part Two is actually shot on Alexa 65 and Alexa Mini LF in 6K and 4.5K respectively, not just Alexa LF. Apologies for the error
The 1.43 version of Dune Part Two has about 40minutes of sequences in the full 1.43 aspect ratio, the rest of the film is 1.90:1
I would assume 1.90:1 is the primary framing of this movie (since the trailers were in that format instead of scope) so feel free to watch it any IMAX near you!
I was saying the same thing to my friends. So can PCX in Hyderabad get flat content?
@@idzkkFlat content of Dune 2 is IMAX exclusive. So no.
So all the IMAX theaters project at 1.90:1 for the entirety of the duration? no switching to 2.39?
Still home and 4k disc release will be in full ScoPe only ..this is what irritates the shit out of me....they could atleast use two Ratios 2.35 and 1.90...Dennis is such a fan of Nolan, then why the hell he thinks Variable Ratios would disturb the experience at home...I have never met a single person even with specific preferences complain about variable ratios in movies...Hell even Avatar 2 50 fps shots changing to 30 fps shots did not put obstruction for it...
I’m a student in the UK and caught Oppenheimer at BFI IMAX. I also recently saw Dune part 1 in 1.43:1 GT IMAX (in Manchester) and I’m so spoilt for it.
Now I’ve realised why non 1.43:1 IMAXes are referred to as LieMAX
which IMAX is this and how can i know whether my local Cineworld IMAX is 1.43
@@brownkiddreams There are only 2 digital IMAX venues in the UK with a 1.43 projection (Vue Printworks, Manchester and Science Museum IMAX, London), and BFI IMAX is playing it in 70mm IMAX film so it’ll also be 1.43. No other venue in the UK is capable of displaying the whole image.
Correct
I’m fortunate enough to be seeing Dune Part 2 in 70MM imax in New York. March 2nd at 3:15 AM, a showing they added after everything for weeks was essentially sold out.
Cant wait!
Let me know how is the experience!’
3:15 in the morning?? damn
How was the experience?
It has several formats. Are there only 1.43 and 2.39 for the 1.43 screen? Or are there more aspect ratios?
I saw Dune Pt 2 in IMAX 70mm in Irvine, CA. It was one of the best cinema experiences I've ever had. For a digital film that was transferred to 35mm and then blown up to 70mm, I was blown away. The movie itself was awesome, and then the visual/audio presentation really took me the the world of Dune. Was also fun hearing the 70mm projector. Man, that thing was loud! Even during some of the climatic sequences, I could still hear the projector and was a nice reminder of how good film can be. Just wish the people around me could have had better theater etiquette, but that's a different story. Was so happy to be able to see the movie in one of the 12 theaters in the world showing 70mm imax film in proper imax theater
I seen it today .. wasnt even in Imax and i was blown away . this movie is stunning .. amazing piece of film making
Love your content man. Keep up the work. Would love to see a complete guide to IMAX/aspect ratios/Screen sizes/projectors
Thanks I appreciate all this clarity.
Amazing video my man!
love your videos man, finally found a fellow cinema buff like me 🤝
👊👊👊
I saw Dune Part 1 at IMAX wadala, now I've already booked Part 2 tickets at newly opened Eros IMAX in Mumbai ( 4k laser IMAX). Excited!!
Awesome!
I watched Dune Part 1 for the first time a few weeks ago at Prasads. Already booked my ticket at Prasads for Part 2. Great video!
Sadly prasads is not IMAX projection. Its just big screen
No IMAX in my city sadly, but I'm flying over to Sydney from Perth to see Dune 2 this weekend! Might even see this in 4DX too seeing as the opportunity is there. Can't wait!
DARLING HARBOUR BABY LETSGOOO
Loved the video and i am traveling to coimbatore broadway for dune. I am soo excited 🕺🏼🕺🏼
Nice!!
Just to correct, the Arri LF shoots a maximum resolution of 4.5k not 6k.
Thanks for the clarification! Got confused with Sony Venice which is also 1.43 and but 6K
No worries. Yes the Sony is 6k with actually a 3:2 sensor. I used it on my last film and it was incredible!
Watching it at the TN Aquarium Imax this Saturday in Chattanooga. Really excited now.
Pvr priya will be my go to for dune part 2
same! i experienced the re-release there and the preview footage was fucking incredible to behold

@@Hey_ahano absolutely but dune 2 bookings for priya imax is not yet open if it opens then what about Saturday

Would you recommend watching it in an onyx (considering it would be so much more of a visual candy) than an imax, if we were to put aside the immersion lost owing to different aspect ratios?
Also, just binged your videos! Really good. Would love to see you make a primer on the slew of formats BMS has against various cinemas (Screen X, ICE, XT Laser vs Laser, Macro XE etc)
I’m pretty sure that the last digital film to get an Imax 15p/70mm release was Rogue One, which is weird considering it didn’t have the 1.43:1 ratio. Apparently it was because the movie was originally planned to be shot on 5p/70mm, and used lenses designed for 70mm cameras.
Some great info! I like the immersive experience of IMAX, esp with the stadium seating.
Thank you!
And yeah I'm travelling to another city around 250km, For IMAX presentation ❤ PVR Priya Delhi.
Hello Good Sir, where in Dallas, Texas do you recommend watching DUNE2 if I can't make it down to Austin TX?
Dune: Part Two was not shot in IMAX 70mm film, but rather was shot digitally using ARRI Alexa cameras and then converted to IMAX 70mm for select theatrical screenings.
Well done KD, a very well thought out and presented video. I need to watch the 4K disc of DUNE again because the image quality was not exactly wonderful on that one. I did a review video for it and pointed out a few things which generated a healthy discussion in the comments. I knew it had been shot entirely on video so wrongly thought all the visible grain on the image was video noise due to low light levels in so much of it but several fellow film enthusiasts let me know the 4K edit was then exported to 35mm film... but only at 2K. This is too low for 35mm film so should have been done at 6K to get the most out of it. Alas, it was apparently only a 2K video to cine transfer and then the end product was upscaled to 4K. I think this is where the image quality went a little awry and why it provided such variable results in cinemas and home cinemas. The sandworm sequence towards the climax is too dark on all my equipment but some report it's good on theirs. Several people saw the video projection in two or more cinemas and were able to confirm it varied in cinemas too with some being too dark and others being okay or good. All of those issues when watching the disc were a bit distracting for me so I know I'll enjoy it more a second time around. I really should be making plans to get to see the blow-up at the BFI IMAX but I'm struggling to generate the enthusiasm at the moment. Hopefully it will be on for a while and the rush for tickets will quiet down in six weeks or so whereupon I'll be ready for the trip. I have no interest in risking another video projection as I have never seen a good one in a cinema and find it all a bit depressing to see how low cinema has fallen in that regard. The 'laser' label seems to impress people but you and I know it's just the light source in the projector. Many seem to think laser projectons somehow form the images on screen but I suppose that was the original marketing intention so we can't blame them.
John.
Wow. Thanks so much for this insightful comment, John.
The rescan being 2K makes a lot of sense now! The details were visibly soft. And I might have to disagree with the Laser label, sure, its no 15/70 or close to celluloid formats, the 4K DLP chip with a good laser light source actually looks pretty good imo, especially when I have compared IMAX’s 2K and IMAX with Laser + a regular Laser theatre back to back with Oppenheimer. The regular non-IMAX Laser DCP gave the most accurate colors of Oppenheimer which is what I see on the 4K UHD BluRay version
@@KDCloudy I think it's the laser lamp in my little Optoma UHZ50 here that boosts the contrast ratio so much so that's probably what the big difference is. I do wish that IMAX would give these lower quality formats a different identity though because most people think that when they go to a cinema with the IMAX label on it they're seeing the true, top quality IMAX format which they certainly are not. I know many got an education on all of this thanks to some successful CZcams videos but a simple identification of the various video formats used by IMAX would differentiate them all and the few remaining cinemas still able to project the best would stand the best chance of success. We actually have what was for many years the best cinema in the country here, The Empire in Leicester Square, being passed off as IMAX. To do that in the ancestral home of cinema in the UK is undoubtedly making people believe they are going in there to see the best format available in the world today when it's just a big screen with the two video projectors using laser lamps. None of this is helping cinema which is in serious trouble - in a fight for survival is how I view it. I do hope DUNE 2 being blown up to 15/70 is a success but I have concerns that many will think that just because it's on 15/70 film that it is a genuine 15/70 film. I can't see how there is any way it is going to look good enough so I hope I'm wrong. I keep telling myself that the 35mm anamorphic blow-up sequences in INTERSTELLAR looked better than any video projection I've ever seen so if DUNE 2 can match that quality then they'll get away with it.
John.
Well our Cinema "Kinopolis" in Frankfurt Germany has 12 rooms and room 1 is with 3D, 4K, HFR, 4K Laser, Dolby Atmos, D-BOX, and Premium Seats.
The Screen is 23,00 x 9,80m and it has 650 Seats, i watched DUNE last Week and it was the best Cinema Experience ive ever had!
Watched it on imax dome theater in usa. What an experience! If you have a dome imax theater or even full imax 1.43:1 screen 100% watch that. It's so good that you can watch it again in dolby cinema just for the sound because it's even better than part 1.
There are 9 total scenes with exceptional world class bass but then again the dome theater i went to had a 9ft diameter subwoofer.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your experience
I watched Dune: Part Two in a regular theater. It looks brighter color wise than Part One.
good analysis man
Very interesting!
I watched it in my home country - Malta 🇲🇹 Though, I am going to Japan and I’m intending to watch it in IMAX 1.43:1.. Super excited for it as it’s only my second time watching a movie in IMAX format 😁😁
Excellent👍
Very nice and informative video❤❤
I’m glad I’m getting to see one of those 70mm prints
Just a slight correction... Frank Herbert did not novelize Dune, he wrote the original story. A novelization is an adaptation of a story from another medium into a novel, like the Star Wars books that share the same names as the films.
Hey, how would be experience for newly opened IMAX at Phoenix Wakad in Pune. Dont see the Dimensions for Screen mentioned??
From what I’ve heard its a pretty excellent theatre. Size guess is about ~55ft
Good to know that even people watching in IMAX will often lose some image compared to people watching in scope.
This is typically not the case though. 99% of the time those watching scope are losing part of the picture.
Only when cropping the 1.43:1 to 1.90:1 would result in important visuals being removed... in those rare circumstances, they'd extend horizontally (so to speak) in order to preserve important visuals that existed at the top/bottom of the IMAX version. I would guess most the film though the IMAX version is showing the extra content. Basically this all just means they've put a lot of thought into the cropping so each version looks visually balanced. I'm glad to hear it.
you wont lose anything compared to scope at 1.9
@@theendoftheline At 1.90 you’d lose a part of the frame which started at 1.43.
@@frankveewhich isnt in scope, the statement was "lose some image compared to watching in scope"
Wow mate thanks for this great explainer. Hoping to see it in 1570 at Melbourne IMAX in a few weeks
Star Wars: The Last Jedi got 12 IMAX Prints and it was 50/50 film/digital.
5perf 70mm prints of Dune will likely be hardmatted on the film and letterboxed to 2.39. The preview in front of Tenet certainly was.
Thanks for the info, and thanks for watching, man!
To make matters even more confusing all 5perf 70mm prints will apparently be in 2:20, at least that’s what I gathered from a few sources. Makes sense on some level as that’s the native aspect ratio for 70 mm film but it’s yet another ratio to reformat the film to.
@@ft4709they will be letterboxed 2.39. Received confirmation from a projectionist handling a print.
Thank you!
I don't understand why they couldn't release Dune in its IMAX aspect ratio on digital release. Tenet was release with its IMAX aspect ratios in tact and it was also released by WB....
Ikrr, same frustration. Who knows why they dont do it
How would the screening in PCX, Hyderabad be? Just 2.35:1?
Hii kd as ur in ahemdabad do u know any thing about the imax opening or any information about the new imax which they are building in palladium mall
I’m not in Ahmedabad 😂
But yeah I got to see a few pictures of the interior, it looks similar to the interior of PVR Superplex Mall of India Noida IMAX
Seems to be around 55ft wide
@@KDCloudy but plz if ur coming to ahemdabad next time do put up a meet up i really want to talk to u in person about movies and different kinds of imax
Since the entire film is shot in 1:90, wouldn't it be better if your base version was in the 16:9 aspect ratio, since it's similar? This way you wouldn't lose so much of the scale proposed by the director when watching it on TV or in a cinema that doesn't have an IMAX.
Hi @KDCloudy, i got so much help from your oppenheimer guide back then as well, could you please suggest which hall i should go to for Dune 2? Logix has the better screen and the other option is select city walk/ priya. Should i go for better projection (select city) or for scale (logix), and, are there any other halls in delhi/noida/gurgaon which will offer a great experience with the mix of scale, quality, and sound quality? Thanks a lot!
I want to have as immersive of an experience as possible
Priya is the defacto best IMAX in NCR. If it’s too far for you, then Logix is enough. If you’re willing to watch twice then do Logix + Mall of India, both at Noida
Priya would be perfect for me, the confusion i had was regarding scale or quality. I watched your video reviewing priya and im completely sold. Being this nitpicky cause i get to watch it right on my birthday! hope the movie lives up to the hype.@@KDCloudy
Also, could you please clarify why Priya wins out over Logix? and why i should choose priya over logix? Logix as i understand has a huge screen but priya is second largest. I think the projection+sound quality is enough of an edge over logix to go with the slightly smaller screen of priya right?
The difference is only of like 1.5 feet in width, Logix wins by a hair in terms of size, but Priya is the largest IMAX screen with Laser AND 12ch audio, quite remarkable
The 4K Laser projection in Priya looks INSANE with the a sharp looking DCP. I watched Oppenheimer in both Xenon and Laser and the difference was night and day.
I’m not confident enough that Dune 2 will be as razor sharp as oppenheimer just because how Dune 1 was soft-ish. But still, if you’re in NCR, it’s worth going to Priya
I saw part one at the bullock museum in ATX opening night, only part that bothered me was the shot of the atreides ship crashing after being hit in the attacked. You could tell it was a zoomed/cropped 2.39, could barely see the troops on the ground compared to the non-IMAX release
Oh wow. Interesting detail. Thanks for sharing!

What about pxl screens? Would they show the scope version and if yes would there he black bars?
Black bars
Whats the point of a PXL screen then? If all movies would get black bars, whats the point?
Great explanation, what's 4k Atmos vs 4k laser dolby??
4K Atmos means nothing because 4K = resolution and Dolby Atmos = a 3D surround sound format.
Two completely different things.
dude u are a legend
It’s sad that they don’t release imax for Blu-ray’s 🙃🙃
sick
Watched imax 70mm, and I feel Dolby does better at making the film more immersive. It's a wide view of the movie (non cropped), the colors are unmatched, the sound is perfection, the image is sharper (you loose a lot of details with the "grain" which is specifically noticeable in the sandworm riding scenes, and (this is the biggest difference) the blacks levels Dolby is able to reproduce give you a more superb depth and contrast that the imax version does not have... If you can, watch it in Dolby.
definitely PVR Priya the best IMAX in India rn.
Also this movie will be Priya's first movie that will fill up the entire screen throughout its whole runtime of 2h46m !!!!!
Yup!!
Thanks for the detaiked information and great content from you for cinema lovers. Wish I could travel to BFI London. Though Blr has highsest no of IMAX, sad is that all are 2K and screens smaller. Any input on Broadwat IMAX at coimbatore will help neareast place to travel.

IMAX being cropped from scope is limited to the worm scene or it applies throughout the movie?
Couple of other scenes too but cannot tell since IMAX versions aren’t available to public
Hey Can you tell where should I watch Dune 2 in Mumbai ? Which screen is the best ? I have till now only visited two imax's here in Mumbai: Wadala Imax which is now being renovated by Miraj cinemas and the Other is The SeaWoods mall imax by Inox. And also what's your opinion on the newly opened Eros Imax in Churchgate ?
Eros IMAX haven’t personally visited, but soon going to do that
Lower Parel and BKC IMAX both are good, I’d go to whichever is closer
Hey what difference did you see between the imax and pcx?
IMAX has screen filling image, ceiling to floor with PCX does not sadly. PCX bigger than IMAX in India tho
Montreal's only 1.43 dual laser is in a science museum that almost never shows commercial films. Our only "real" IMAX theatre for commercial films, that had 15/70 1.43, removed the 70mm IMAX projector years ago (Interstellar was the last film they used it for), and replaced it with the 2K xenon. They refuse to upgrade to laser due to cost, they just do 2K xenon on the existing 1.43 screen. They're showing the 5/70mm print in a regular theatre but I've heard it's not a great print, and it's scoped. So I decided to go for the 2k xenon IMAX, even if the image will be low resolution, at least I will get the the 1.90...
So where did you go watch Dune 2 then? Scotia Bank?
Hey, will you be checking out the new eros imax in Mumbai?
Yup I’ll try during my trip in Mumbai in mid march
So would you recommend IMAX 1.90 or Dolby Cinema Laser? Imax is bigger by Dol,by better quality. If 1.43 that would be well worth it but not nearby.
Bigger of course
What aspect ratio are we getting in prasads pcx screen?? Anyone tell me
Scope 2.39:1
Надо отдать должное вильнёву, позаботился о всех возможных зрителях
Travelling and watching it on 1.43:1 GT at Vue Printworks.
Awesome! Where do you live?
Same. Travelling 4 hours from Scotland
FYI, your IMAX (not GT) laser at your local cinema most of the time, is only 1.9 not 1.43, and your dolby cinema is either 2.39 or 1.85 (even better than imax), just fyi as its easy to get confused and think IMAX will have the larger aspect ratio when in my local theater I've now realized the dolby cinema is the larger (1.85) aspect ratio so the IMAX wont ever actually beat it. If you actually have a gt laser setup you'd still want to ask if they have a 1.43 capable screen size for it, if so then you are at one of the very few full imax sites where 1.43 is displayed at all.
Wanted to add to this that even when the Dolby can make the aspect ratio physically, the IMAX release might have a different aspect ratio just because that version is contracted for IMAX, and dolby gets the regular 2.39 just due to the contract restrictions. Appeared to be that way with Dune 2.
Will it be good if i watch dune 2 in pvr imax priya, vasant vihar ??

Hi, I don't know a lot about the technical side of film and this video of yours was very informative, thank you.
i wonder if you would take a look at another video and comment on it as it seems to show clear contradiction to what you are saying regarding the loss of information top and bottom when shown scope. The video is titled "DUNE IMAX Footage | Standard VS. IMAX Comparison Side by Side" on the channel Secrets of Dune. It shows how much information IS lost from the top and bottom in many scenes when the IMAX version is not able to be viewed. I would love to know what you make of this!

Dune Part 2 crops the left and right sides of the 1.90 image while using the 1.43 aspect ratio which is very mind boggling to me.
The whole point of 1.43 IMAX is to vertically ADD TO a 2.39:1 image. Not crop the left and right sides.
