If you want it, go ahead. I bought a used one and am finding it to be my favourite! If you have this guitar plus a versatile amp (I have a Fender Super Champ XD), you can produce anything from full on Humbucker heavy rock (Marshall) tones, to crisp single coil (Fender) tones. Not quite the roundness or sustain of the Epi Les Paul Standard, but a LOT less weight, more comfortable and MUCH easier access to the upper frets.

Malcolm passing away really hurt. His was the first passing that really punched my mortality in the face. I remember looking at the inside of the For Those About to Rock album. The picture of AC/DC with Malcolm playing his White Falcon was such a powerful image; as if they were invincible and immortal. Rock In Power Malcolm.

Just bought this model used including gig bag for £180 ($235/€205); superb value. Granted that it lacks the warmth/full tone of the Les Paul, but on the other hand, the bite (brighter sound) cuts through and is very good for certain tunes. The coil split gives a fair rendition of a single coil pick up and allows you to play your favourite classics without having to haul out your single coil guitar (but let's face it there is nothing like a Strat for single coil chime). Mine weigths 7lb 3oz (compared to 9lb 10oz for my Epi Les Paul Standard) and so is very comfortable to play. A great all rounder guitar! I bought an Epi hard case - suggest to buy this if you buy a new guitar; it is strong and fits like a glove!

I just bought a 2018 Gibson SG standard for 1539$. The g-400 is great for the price but I really wanted an sg that I'll be rocking for the rest of my life so I went with the Gibson. It's ridiculously good. The g-400 feels like a completely different instrument, but the Gibson blows it out of the water in sound, quality, playability, feel, and just overall. I'd still recommend the g-400 if you just wanna add an sg to your collection, or want something good to learn on, but if you want something that's gunna make you nut In your pants the first time playing it, go with a a Gibson Standard SG.
An old wise man once told me - life is too short to buy cheap booze and guitars.

I have les paul trad 2016, fender american strat 2014, and epiphone sg400 2015. I use my sg400 as my main guitar. It is Light weight compared to les paul and strat, comfortable to play, very good sound, and the best part is it is cheap. I put it to abuse by playing hard without worrying i will damage my expensive guitars. i removed the pick up covers and the sound became more punchy. Very versatile guitar and can achieve many tones due to dual pickup and coil split. However, the weak part are the cheap volume pots. Pots are pcb and failed only in a few months. I replaced with gibson les paul coil split volume pots and removed the pcb and hand wired the pots. Works perfect! I still often use my fender and gibson but the sg400 is my no. 1 choice.

I’ve got a G400, a Gibson LP traditional and an a Fender Strato American Std. I swapped the Epi’s caps for Gibson Classic 51 and 51 plus. The tone now is great and those who listen this guitar would think it is a Gibson. However, the Gibsons wood quality is noticeable when it comes to sustain and playability.
Epiphones would never be close to Gibson, mainly because of the wood and eletronics, IMHO. However, this is a great guitar. Already gigged with it several times.
Summary: with some caps update, you end up with a great guitar.

I'd make a few little improvements: 1. replace the vintage tulip machine heads with modern chrome kidneys; 2. remove the nooby treble/rhythm pickup selector disc; 3. stain the fretboard from pau ferro to look like rosewood or ebony. it would then look as good as it sounds IMHO. ;) can't seem to get these in black now - just the common cherry.

I 100% guarantee it's not better than the standard. When you play this guitar it's feels pretty good. It feels like you're playing what you're paying for. A good 400$ rock machine. Which is fine, but when you pick up a brand new Gibson Sg standard it feels, plays and sounds like you're holding a 1,539$ guitar. It's a fucking beast I just bought one. Yeah price wise this one may seem more appealing to most people who just kinda would like to have an sg. But there is no comparison between a new 2018 Gibson standard and the G-400 sorry you're very wrong on this one. It may be better than some of the cheaper Gibson model SGs but definitely not the standard.

I have a G400 Pro. When I first got it I was underwhelmed really. Looked into it more and found that the reason I was not loving it was because the fingerboard had extreme amounts of fret buzzing choking the notes and preventing notes from ringing true and sustaining. I had to do a load of fret levelling on this guitar as almost all the lower frets from 7 on-wards needed attention. This is really not good enough for the price you pay for Epiphone which is high end of budget guitar range. In my opinion both Vintage and Yamaha offer so much better. On my Vintage VS6 I had only to level 1 fret to achieve perfection whereas on the Epi it was at least 7 of the frets were out and by a mile which prevented obtaining a reasonably low action. Pick ups are ok on the Epi but nothing special and you may want to replace that as well. So all in all the price is building up and getting near to the cost of a Gibson SG special especially if you cannot do the work for yourself and need a guitar tech to do it for you. All in all then it is clear where Epiphone are making the savings and compromises and this is in the labour intensive tasks like fret levelling. They are chucking out a poor product made cheaply without care and attention where the action is set high to mask out the compromises that they have made and lack of care and attention to detail. Beginners may not notice this but a more intermediate player would. Buy a G 400 or G 400 Pro but expect to do a lot of work to make it a truly playable and pleasurable experience. having said all that I now do like the G 400 Pro because it plays properly like it should have of before it left the factory. I have had Epiphones before and all have suffered quality control issues. I would recommend either Vintage or Yamaha as better options for budget guitars. There is no way an Epi G400 Pro comes close to Gibson SG Standard. Gibson prices are over inflated and really the product is not worth the little bit more you get. However with Gibson you are paying for the attention to detail and better hardware. Get the Epi and expect to do some serious amount of work on the fingerboard to improve the bare, less than perfect product you get. Then replace the pick ups and put in a bridge pickup with Alnico II magnet in and when you have done all of this then you could possibly claim that it was up there with a Gibson Standard. By the way I am no fan of Gibson and do not think their guitars are anything near worth the prices they charge but you do expect that they have done the work and paid attention to the details that make a good guitar playable. I am essentially a fan of cheap guitars and like to make them play much better than when you receive them but you do have to invest time, and some skill in such a project and possibly some money as well. Maybe you can get as good as Gibson SG Standard if you are prepared to do the work and make some investment but out of the box the Gibson would win hands down.

Just goes to show it's not the equipment, it's the musician. yea, the distortion he used sounds ~awesome~
you can tell when he goes to the clean tones that the pedal or amp helped it a LOT

I have this guitar and the pickup switch position is inverted from the factory, rhythm position for bridge pickup and treble for neck pickup 😁.

I recently played a cheap epiphone sg and it had a thick coat of lacquer on the neck, which made it hard to move quickly around the neck. Does this have the same problem?

This veneer on the single scratch pate cherry top looks much better than the veneer on the one with the bat-wing scratch plate,...looks like it has taps as well,...wondering why they didn't put taps on the vintage worn brown,...because vintage is in the name?.......

Would you have to do anything with your amp to make it sound this intense. Or will it sound like that when I plug it in to an amp. Obviously tuned
