Epiphone G-400 Pro SG Unboxing: Really Nice?

  • I've had a bunch of Gibsons over the years and a bunch of Epiphones. I'm not going to try to say Gibsons aren't better but Epiphones have close the gap by a lot. With a little TLC (and maybe some new pickups) can the SG G-400 Pro compete with its Gibson big brother?

    Everyone always says "Epiphone has really upped their game" on these reviews, as if Epiphones have been garbage up until recently or something. I have an Epi LP I bought from Mars Music at least 15 years ago and it is a fantastic guitar. Just as good of fit and finish as any Gibson LP. With Gibson, you're getting slightly better hardware, and slightly better wood (which arguably doesn't even matter... come at me). No chance there is $1500 worth of "better wood" in a guitar, and the hardware maybe accounts for about $300. The rest is all American labor rates and brand markup. My point is, Epi hasn't "stepped up their game," and hasn't needed to for the better part of the past 2 decades.

      Really old comment but for some reason this video was recommended to me. Anyways, yeah, I own an Epiphone SG g-400 from the early 90s and it is on par with my Gibson SG, easily. It's bone stock and feels, sounds, and plays just as good (even better in some cases) as any Gibson I've used. Yeah, I love Epiphone; I kind of feel silly owning a Gibson considering how great Epiphone is.

It looks just like the Iommi Model minus the Crosses on the neck the 400 Pro is the same guitar, imo the probucker classic epi pickups sound better than the Gibson Iommi pickup's that come w/the Epi Iommi SG. But it's like $889.

    If Epiphone/Sweetwater is viewing my comment.... You need to loosen the guitar strings when you ship out a guitar, especially an SG. Headstocks on SG, Les Paul, etc crack rather easily during shipping, simply because of the tilted headstock.

    You do not adjust intonation with a truss rod adjustment..
    I have two Gibson Les Pauls. A Les Paul standard gold top, and a les Paul classic Ebony with P 90s.
    I also have an epi les Paul 1956 replica gold top P 90s.
    my Les Paul standard gold top is pretty much perfect, my Les Paul classic Ebony has some flaws in the finish where the neck meets the body in that crack. It’s just not perfect
    but black does not forgive. It shows everything
    my EP by 1956 Les Paul replica gold top is also perfect
    they feel the same, all three of them. The classic is heavy. It is one solid hunk of wood no relief holes in the body like my standard gold top has ..
    I have to say, that with the automation they have making these epiphones offshore.. ACNC machine that’s controlled by computer is going to make it perfect. I’ve seen videos and it looks like they make 20 or 30 necks at the same time. They’re all gonna be exactly the same, and they’ll all be perfect, or else all of them will be wrong..
    I also have an EPI SG 400 pro.. also perfect.. The gibson has a thinner more contoured body on the SGS, and the body is lighter on the gibson, gibson has Grovers, much more fabulous pick ups, in the Gibson SG does not have coil tap but the EPI does have coil tap..

    Amazing guitar, the nut is crap at least it was on mine so I went for a brass nut, tuners work but are a little flimsy and 14:1 ratio on a short scale ... not really so upgrading eventually might be a good idea. Pickups sound EXCATLY like Gibson Classic 57 and the electronics while being the plug and pray style there is no PCB, pots are full scale AND alpha pots so no need to rewire everything. Conclusion, Epiphone has a better guitar than the Gibson SG and the BIG plus, the neck is made with a scarf joint unlike Gibson so no snapping the head off!

    • @BSIII
      @BSIII Před 4 lety

      A glued set neck resonates better. A thicker tone, less twangy than a bolt on neck. All about tone and sound vibration through the body. Also more sustain. Some people say buying the epiphone sg or les pauls with bolt on neck defeats the purpose of what makes the sg and les paul's thick tone and sustain, outside of the pickups.

    • @kcsvantasticvoyages9729
      @kcsvantasticvoyages9729 Před rokem

      I really think it’s more of a repair minded issue. Break a set neck and only option is reglue it, yet on a bolt on neck you can actually replace it. The whole vibration transfer thing is partially a myth.

    I have a G400 Pro. When I first got it I was underwhelmed really. Looked into it more and found that the reason I was not loving it was because the fingerboard had extreme amounts of fret buzzing choking the notes and preventing notes from ringing true and sustaining. I had to do a load of fret levelling on this guitar as almost all the lower frets from 7 on-wards needed attention. This is really not good enough for the price you pay for Epiphone which is high end of budget guitar range. In my opinion both Vintage and Yamaha offer so much better. On my Vintage VS6 I had only to level 1 fret to achieve perfection whereas on the Epi it was at least 7 of the frets were out and by a mile which prevented obtaining a reasonably low action. Pick ups are ok on the Epi but nothing special and you may want to replace that as well. So all in all the price is building up and getting near to the cost of a Gibson SG special especially if you cannot do the work for yourself and need a guitar tech to do it for you. All in all then it is clear where Epiphone are making the savings and compromises and this is in the labour intensive tasks like fret levelling. They are chucking out a poor product made cheaply without care and attention where the action is set high to mask out the compromises that they have made and lack of care and attention to detail. Beginners may not notice this but a more intermediate player would. Buy a G 400 or G 400 Pro but expect to do a lot of work to make it a truly playable and pleasurable experience. having said all that I now do like the G 400 Pro because it plays properly like it should have of before it left the factory. I have had Epiphones before and all have suffered quality control issues. I would recommend either Vintage or Yamaha as better options for budget guitars.

    Epiphone has Poly coated neck, which I hate, because it "never wears"....and feels sticky and annoying. On a Les Paul or higher quality guitar brand, you get Nitro finish, so it wears and AGES like a proper guitar should. I really like a Epi, but the Poly coating is usually a instant No for me, they just feel fake to me.....

      @@adrian_V99 others call it tapping and others call it splitting the correct is splitting your going from humbucker Mode to single Coil mode tapping is the wrong terminology as a matter of fact it's even said it's wrong

    the truss rod doesn't affect the intonation

      Yes it does, anything that alters the distance between the nut and the saddle affects the intonation.

    I could not stand those robo tuners on that Gibson. I'd take the Epiphone.

      Don’t listen to him. This guitar is my favorite guitar, absolutely stunning. Looks, sounds, and play like a Gibson for a lower price

    When it takes up more than half of the video before we have even seen the guitar, I lost interest and left. Not a very good video.

    The Epiphone G400 Pro is probably the best Standard SG out their ..American made when it comes to guitars means nothing..the Epiphone Facility in China has mostly American Luthiers and some are Ex Gibson employees...and Epiphone is a American company who Les Paul was associated with all the way until his death in 2009..Epiphones are most certainly crafted better than Gibsons..Gibsons weak headstocks..finish Flaws ..electronic Issues..Epiphone has none of these issues they are beautiful works of Art..Gibsons are overrated..over priced pieces of Wood and today no one falls for the Gibson BS..

      @Joey Larimore... do you own any Gibsons?

    • @ukdc-acdctribute1142
      @ukdc-acdctribute1142 Před 5 lety

      I do, a 2018 standard. I also own a g400 pro. Sadly, the epi doesn't touch the Gibson in any way at all. The epi LP tribute plus is an awesome guitar and definitely chomps at the heals of the Gibson lp standard. But the sg range, good as they are for the price are nowhere near the Gibson sg standard. The special maybe, but not the standard.
