What's that riff at the start
In a previous life (early 70's) I played the Gibson SG. Recently, when I decided, after 40+ years, to begin playing again I researched and found this exact guitar and bought one. My thoughts are really that this is so close to the Gibson in all respects that I question why someone would even consider the much more expensive Gibson SG. I couldn't be happier with my decision. Mine was a demo from Sweetwater and this plus an Orange Crush 12 and some other accessories only cost me a bit over $425. I am really impressed with the lower priced, foreign made, guitars these days. Looking at a Squire Strat now and maybe an Epiphone Les Paul.
Check out the japanese and korean made epiphones and squiers. Be careful with korean squiers, though. For a few years they used particle board. It is easy to find which years they did that, though. Japanese squiers are hailed for their craftsmanship.
I have 2 korean squiers (not the particle board ones) and love em. Hope to score some japanese squiers and epis one day
@UpNort, I hear you...I've been playing high end guitars, but I've fallen in love with the Epiphone SG G400!! The neck alone is worth it (I'm playing much faster), and I love how light these guitars are. I've since bought a 2nd one (SG G400 and SG Pro)...not much difference in price.
@@izzy574 i love the wider fretboard on them. All I ever played was strat fretboards, and sgs are a bit wider, and helps with vibrato and the weird shapes of my fingers lol. There was a 2003/04 korean korina epiphone sg that was the most beautiful guitar i had ever seen, and was in excellent condition, but i didnt have th 450$ for it. Who ever won that bid got lucky.
I have a 2003 Korean made epiphone les Paul. I love it. Picked it up for $275 and it’s the best decision I ever made. Couldn’t recommend it enough
went yesterday to guitar center looking for my first electric guitar. tried this and an lp 100, and i was amazed how much more guitar this was for only 50 more bucks. the lp 100 felt like a toy while this felt like an instrument, ended up getting one of these and paired it with a blackstar id core 40 amp. really happy with both :)
Ive been playing guitar for almost 30 years and i have tought guitar so I know my way around a guitar and i know a quality instrument from a crappy one. That being said, I have two of these. For $300-$350, you're getting a huge bargain and a beast of a guitar. The stock pickups sound alright, but if you upgrade to Duncans, Gibson USA, or EMGs (whatever you prefer) you have yourself a gig worthy/pro quality axe.
The stock pickups are good "all-around" pickups in my opinion, but I'm sure a lot of 'purists' out there would tell you different. They're ok for metal, but I'm a metal/punk guy and I replaced the bridge pickups in mine with Seymour Duncan JB's and left the neck pickups stock. If you're on a budget though, the stock pickups will do just fine until you can get replacements. It just depends on what kinda sound you like and what works best with the guitar. If they sound good to you, don't change them. "Stock" doesn't necessarily mean "crappy." There's a lot of 'budget' instruments out there that sound good stock, right out of the box. They just get a bad rep because they're considered 'cheap.' Don't let anyone tell ya different.
Out of the guitars you listed, I'd pick the G400, but thats me. If I were you I'd try each guitar out at a music shop and see which one I liked best. With the G400, you're getting a set neck and the best guitar for your money out of the ones you listed (in my opinion). The G400 definitely has the fastest and easiest playing neck out of the ones you mentioned. I prefer 25.5 scale but I really like the G400 despite its 24.74 shorter scale, and that says a lot coming from me: a guy who loves long scale instruments (I have a 27 scale baritone). In my opinion, the only differences between the Epi and the Gibson SG's is the name on the headstock and where they're made. The G400 is a pro quality instrument and I wouldn't be afraid to walk into a guitar store, buy one right off the rack, and go gig with it the same day.
That's just my opinion though. Try them all out for yourself and get what you like the best. :)
Take care and I hope you find the sound you're lookin' for! :)
Don't worry about the thin body on the SG; if you like how a LP sounds, then you'll love the SG. It's not as dark sounding as an LP and not as bright as a Strat. It's a very bitey sound that cuts thru a mix really well. Just listen to Volbeat or Sabbath or ACDC... all of those tones are SG's. As for good practice/small gigging amps, I highly recommend the Orange Crush 35RT. Amazing amp for the money. And you're not wasting my time. I could talk about gear all day. :)
I just hope I was able to help you. Feel free to message me on Google+ any time you need any input about gear. :)
Pat ChoKo thanks for the help kind Sir.
Pat ChoKo just would like to find out if you can play Rick Springfield's "Jessies girl or other cool songs from Rick Springfield and Bryan Adams. Thanks.
I've been so stoked with my G400!! Especially paired with my Kustom Coupe 72. It's like they were made for each other!
I've been playing high end guitars, but the other day I went to GC and just thought I'd try out the least expensive SG. I was wanting to just try one out. Well, I came home with the Epiphone SG G400 and I'm in heaven!! I can't believe the difference the neck has made on my playing (It's a FAST neck)! Plus how light the guitar itself is. I'm shocked considering this guitar only costed me $315 (normally $349, but I got a 10% discount, and it's brand new, with a banded fretboard). I got the same color as in this video, 'worn cherry.' BTW, I love this guitar so much I just ordered another one...this one is an SG Pro in ebony. Unbelievable considering I've got a Gibson Les Paul 50's Standard and other high end guitars and yet I'm loving these Epiphone SG's! Lol, I just may end up playing SG'S along due to the neck and weight.
Not just for starters... I own one. Great guitar, period.
Does this guitar have those push pull pots? I think I might be in the market. That's not a deal breaker but I'm curious. Thanks.
I think that option is on the G-400 Pro
Thanks.
It sounds incredible! And the stock pickups are fine, believe me ... 55 and still rocking since I was 10 ... Enjoy this guitar. I picked up the trans cherry and it's a gorgeous deep ruby cherry red that people freak over. Thanks for the vid. Sounds, true.
that was a good review - thanks man!!!
A full on demo ,,great stuff my man!
An excellent demo. Thank you.
Never thought I would see Theon Greyjoy doing guitar reviews
his name is Reek
You’re an idiot.
George1002 you’re an idiot
C 17 no sir. That would be you.
Outstanding review!
I got this guitar for Christmas 2014 and it is awesome..great to play and sounds fantastic. I got it right out of the box, took it in for set up and no complaints at all...other than my playing..but I"m getting better. Balanced and great feel, play rock and metal and looking forward to learning more and checking out these features.
hey Norman I just got one and its not sounding too good through my amp maybe I should take it in and get it set up ? it came straight from factory I think.
Hey, A set up is recommended, I got a line 6 spider III 15 amp and sounds great, even in clean mode, throw in effects and is alot of fun. I was getting a buzz with the A string which through off the sound of the chords, they set up all strings and made sure it was in perfect working order. Sounds so much better.
Norman Ettawacappo yep im getting a bit of a buzz of one of the strings and the tone of a d chords sounds kinda out of tune even though its in tune lol think I will take it into the shop see what they say thanks for the reply.
Norman Ettawacappo think im needing a new amp also so wasn't sure if was the amp or needed a set up of the guitar or could be both the amp died earlier lol r.i.p im liking the look of the spider III on there site thanks for the help.
I've playing since I was 12 years old I'm 44 now (You do the math). And I've played several guitars and the Epiphone SG worn brown g-400 (not mention the Arbor Les Paul Copy) are my two favorites. Yes I own both.
thanks for the review! I just bought one of these beauties today in the ruby red and should have it in 8 business days by UPS ... can't wait!
Thank you, man! It helped a lot! :)
After falling in love with Black Sabbath and Pentagram, I went on a full SG craze. A month back, i missed out on a killer deal on a korean epiphone goth, but settled on a 2016 Epi g400 faded cherry like yours. Surprised that i love it, even though it was made in china. Still, I keep looking for a chance to get a deal on a korean epi g400... finally found one. Won a bid on a 2004 korean g400, also faded cherry, but with binding! Cant wait to get it shipped. Thing looks amazing. My SG thirst didnt stop there. I kept being bothered by my missing out on that matte black korean g400 gothic. Didnt find one at all until last night. I didnt wait this time and ordered it. A 2001 korean g400 matte black gothic with a fat neck, and got a killer deal on it. Those gothic sgs, even the chinese ones are becoming a bit rare. I love the matte black finish, and XII fretboard. Stoked to get it.
I've been exclusively a strat guy. Have 2 sought-after '96/'97 korean Squier pro tones, a partscaster that i built with humbuckers that I love dearly. My humbucker partscaster is perfect for my new interest in heavy doom tones, but i got a serious sg itch after obsessing over Pentagram. Lol i almost got a white g400 because Vincent McAllister used a white gibson SG on all the early Pentagram recordings and rehearsals. Check out their work. He is a hidden gem guitar god. So all in all, I will have 4 korean guitars lololol 2 korean squiers, and 2 korean epiphones. Love japanese and korean craftsmanship.
Love Pentagram! Found out about them awhile ago through the documentary "Such Hawks Such Hounds" its about the doom/sludge/stoner metal scenes in America. If you haven't seen it you should watch it it's on youtube now!
I own this guitar, and it's the most versatile guitar I've ever played. It's great for almost any musical genre you can think of. That's what I love about SG's :)
I like this guy to demo guitars... he plays well and follows the script about the guitar. And he's a cool fellow.
bought my 66 sg epi reissue..love it
Bought pearl plastic tuning knobs, some Stainless Steel tone knobs for all 4 switches off Etsy, and the guitar is balanced now. No neck more neck dive
Its all new to me to know which guitar gives the best start but understandning the differences wood makes in the metallic sound I am beginning to learn the differences
just got an SG Pro and I love it ( Epiphone )...been playing for years and have a bunch of Epi's and love them all and my SG is no exception ,,,,
They're making this model with coil-tap push-pulls now, although that might have not been true with the guitar you demoed. It would be interesting to hear the tapped-coil "single coil" sounds for each position, too. Once I learned the difference between coil-tapping and coil-splitting, I'm so much more a fan of the coil-tap because you can get that single-coild sound without losing the humbucking properties of the pickup, whereas, with a split, you get a weak-ass version of a single-coil.
Awesome video
These are amazing guitars I used to have one I've been playing the guitar since 2005 I think they are great to play on the higher frets too
I have this guitar now I love it!
Simple but effective demo on a guitar that really does exactly the same
love the fact that this guy reviews guitars that most people can afford!! i dont mind the high-end reviews, but these are really useful.
Getting one next week!
I had a gibson SG faded back in the day and I sold it, My epiphone G400 plays, sounds and feels better than it did. Not to mention I bought it for $160.00 on craigslist. These are awesome guitars. The pickups are good too, and I usually always swap out stock pickups. Get one on the cheap and let there be rock!
Yes. Jus Osborn (Electric Wizard) used it on dopethrone.
thanks man! , so im buying my new guitar in few days!
Oh thanks, that's helped a lot mate :D
Takk for den. Dmitri elsker deg
i shall be getting this beauty within the next 2 weeks (hopefully) :D
love your Martin shirt :)
I think pickups make the biggest difference on electric gutiars. Electronics inside the guitar also make a difference too, but in relation to SG vs Les Paul, I think you're right in regards to pickups really defining the sound, not the wood.
Sweet sound
I love this guitar!
Thanks for the review my friend. I'm looking for a guitar that's easy to play and I've been recommended the Epiphone SG and the Ibanez gax30. Which one would you recommend for a complete beginner?
+biribobili Depends on the style of music you're into. For rock I'd go with the SG and for Metal I'd go with the Ibanez.
I could use that axe for pro gigs..it sounds really great to my ears. Impressed !
I can hear the difference in sound when the guitar is unplugged in the same way as with an acoustic guitar, so I have no problem with my ears, but what I said was that magnetic pickups are physically unable to pick up the resonance of the guitar. The ONLY thing thay can pick up from the guitar is the vibration in the strings. Only if/when the material affect the vibration of the string will it make a difference. If you want to pick up the resonance you have to use a piezopickup or similar.
i dont have the guitar but am thinking of getting one, i have researched it and i think its down to the way the neck is attached to the body (glued instead of the traditional bolt on)
This is an awesome guitar. Got the same one. 2016. Same finish. Clean tone sounds almost like Gibson. Love it.
id drop some bare knuckle warpigs in there day #1! put it in C# standard and pump the gain \m/
I think these sound awesome. I've been debating between this or a Strat and I'm getting the SG. And baby these can bark!
Thank you!
Great review, what amp are you using
Bought one last year and I f*cking love it!! If you're considering buhing a guitar and you're on a limited budget, this is the guitar for you.
Hoping to get a proper SG or the Angus Young custom soon.... :D
I've been playing for around 6 years. I have this guitar and I would recommend it to anyone-not just beginners!
how is the neck compared to the Gibson SG standard? they say D taper slim 60, so is it chunkier than the C? Is it worth it to get this cheap SG400 and upgrade the pups to the Gibson 57? I mainly blues only. thanks great review as usual!
Great review and info. You always do a great job. BTW. Does anyone know what the G-400 stands for?
after i saw this video, i got my first guitar ( 2nd hand), sold it when i move to another country, i miss it
The sound only depends on the pickups and how they are set up. The material (unless it's not magnetic) or the size will nor add anything to the sound of the guitar. With the right pickups and the right setup, an SG will sound exactly like a Les Paul or even a Strat. And that's because the pickups only can pick up changes in the magnetic field and transform these changes to sound.
My favorite guitar I ever had! & then lost while on drugs! Now I’m off drugs and getting one for my birthday next week!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Tengo un amigo que la compro sin antes haber tocado otra nada mas que un par de veces la de su padre y ahora le va bastante bien con esta
@hangen1 of course! angus young(the lead guitarist for ACDC) uses this guitar!!!
I own one. It's a great sounding guitar for its price. The only problem I had with mine was the frets. I went to a luthier to have its frets leveled. I should have inspected the guitar frets properly before buying it. Nonetheless, it plays well. =)
okay... so what´s the main difference between the G400 and G400 Pro? Only the coil splitting (which is a very cool feature on the Pro), or are there different pick-ups in them as well and such?
RSProduxx different pickups, coil splitting, and different tuners
okay, thanks... i´ll get the pro anyway :)
Got it today played for about seven hours straight I love it
Holy shit it's Manuel Neuer!
from where did you bring football in
I have guitars that cost way more and this is still the one I pick up 90 percent of the time to play. Ditched the 20 pound grover tuners for some lightweight Gibson historic tuners, huge difference.
Yeah I'm 27 and coming up with $300 is alot harder then when I lived with my parents and didn't have any bills lol. I started with $15 craptacular acoustic from a fleamarket and thats all I had for like 3 years. Then I got an Epi LP-100. 16 years later that's still my main go to guitar.
This is the first guitar I've purchased and I'll keep it for a long time. I also have a Epiphone LP custom and I like the Epi SG G-400 more than the LP. In the vid the guy said the SG has a nice tone, not too bright and not too heavy which I like. Where the LP Custom tone is a bit heavy. Also, he forgot to mention that this SG has a slim neck which personally I love. It's a good guitar in general. Just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's for beginners.
Hello. I've been playing for 4 years on the electric guitar. I am interested in the Epiphone SG G-400. I play every single day for about an hour. Would this guitar be good for me? I tried this guitar at the store and a gibson sg standard but I didn't hear a difference for some reason. So anyways, would this guitar be good for me?
This may be the first bridge humbucker I've liked clean
Very true. Almost every bridge humbucker I've heard make the guitar sound bad or out of tune. I was very impressed when I demod this guitar.
I was wondering, would be a good thing to install a bigsby b70 on that guitar? Will everything workout fine?
Yes, but make shure you give your guitar to the right person.
sorry about this question,is there much difference of getting gibson sg 70s tribute,i am an intermediate player, what you recommend, regardless of the price?
if i want to buy the exact guitar you have in the video, do i head for the g-400 or the vintage g-400 ? the color of yours its only available on the vintage one
wich amp would you choose to start with a sg without commiting to much to a certain sound? Cheers
the tune-o-matic in the G-400 isn't necessarily a "standard tune-o-matic," FYI. it's an Epiphone designed bridge which locks onto the studs. better than a GIbson tune-o-matic for sure.
It really depends what style you want to play. I'm in a similar position to you except a couple of years older, I'm currently looking at the Epiphone ES-339 or the Epiphone dot. if you're decided on one of those though, I would say the SG G-400, there's been a lot of who-ha over the les paul, broken electronics and stuff like that...
@HappyFace788 its a tremelo bar and now..you have to install it on if you want
this is a personal gripe of mine, not sure if others have this problem, but it seems that the neck is heavier on my G400 (1966 pro version)
I have an Epiphone SG and the natural acoustics are very bright and pleasant sounding. However, when i plug it into an amp it becomes much darker and muddier sounding. i intend to buy some 57 classics which should make it sound more true to its acoustic sound (i'm aware pickups are not the only aspect of making a guitar sound good, but understand that my particular guitar sounds fantastic acoustically speaking). Ergo, Epiphone can make quality instruments, you just need to look around
I am a begginner and have a question, In the middle setting on the switch- one volume and one tone knob do nothing, and the other works. I kinda thought you would use the volume knobs to adjust how much of each pickup was being used. but maybe thats not how this works. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with the switch or pots ? I bought this SG at a Pawn shop and have no idea of its history, and as I said, I am a beginner and dont know much about how its supposed to work, Thanks for any help
Hello Guitareo! i got a question..maybe you can help me..? in the case of the 400 Pro, the neck is glued ...does it give any problems by change the neck or something.. which advantages or disadvantages result from this? Thank you in advance! Greetz from northern europe! :-)
WOOW!! I love that guitar and it sounds very nice!!!! What is the cost of the guitar??? Maybe in the future i buy it ;)
Do you mind telling me, How long do the frets last and what are they made of?
al fin uno que muestra bien las cosas
got one second hand for 80 quid but I'm changing the pickups out they're low output ,muddy and microphonic ..they feed back worse than anything else I've got even a low volumes
im buying this guitar
@PsychoB Well, It's not high gain distortion no. It is probably a Tubescreamer or Boss SD-1 overdrive into the clean channel with the gain knob all the way up. But technically yes it counts as dirty.
you're not alone bro
Im thinking of getting either a gibson sg special or this guitar. Any suggestions?
new, the guitar is in the range of $300 to $800. if you want the deluxe (sunburst) its closer to $800. if a regular one, closer to $350. it sounds amazing and feels very good. against the les paul, it has more spreaded strings so its a little easier to play the right note. haha
played for nearly 11 months, ive actually started sweeping now (the only reason for my progress is because i play for 5-8 hours a day) and i have 5 guitars, 2 acoustics, i have a German made rio style strat for my rock style tones, a epiphone LP100 with a SD invader for metal type tones and an ibanez rg to shred on, you should really have more then one guitar so you can play different music styles. (yeah im kind of a guitar nerd, and ive lost weight from it cause i only eat uncle bens rice :L)
I have a G400 and for the price i paid, can't complain about it. But when i play standing up, the neck seems heavy, it tends to slide down. Is there something to do for it to keep steady? When Angus plays his SG, he lets go of it and it doesn't slide.
It's great for playing Ernest Tubb
Hi! I wanted to ask which guitar is better - Epiphone G-400 Vintage or Epiphone G-400 PRO? Ty guys!
Compare pickups and make sure to play both. This one definitely looks nicer, but the gibson might be easier to sell later on
my epiphone sg g 400 cherry red with standerd silver humbucking pick ups was $625
i worked my ass off to bye a gibson les paul 60 tribute it's not that expensive but when you'r young it is :p it was my starter too
im sure it is. but if you stood up with it strapped on does the headstock bob down? is it top heavy?
Neither is better; it all just comes down to taste and which one you prefer. I for one like SGs more, because of the crazy fret access
the goth series is a little bit cheaper at 250 for factory restock at guitar center AND LOOKS WAY BETTER WITH THE FLAT SATIN BLACK
Excellent excellent guitar for that price for beginners. Grover tuners are excellent.
Cool guitar
