I once met a white man with these super long, awesome dreadlocks, so I complimented him about them. He kindly said thank you, but what he said after was actually very enlightening. What he said was: the dreadlocks aren’t just a hairstyle, but something far greater and more precious to him. He explained that he viewed his hair as a tangible symbol of the experience and development he, himself, underwent in his life. For as his dreadlocks grew over the years, he too grew physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually along with them, for both his hair and his life experience are both part of him. While the experience is taken forward through the intangible nature of his memories and personal growth, his hair could physically stay with him as a reminder of where he was and how far he’s come.
Anyway, Your statements are very intelligent and very well presented. I love your arguments and the way you cite examples from so many cultures. You’re incredibly informative and thoughtful.

@@Meli-ul9zt But it's like Kris says in the video; dreadlocks is not an exclusive black hairstyle - any hair, if left uncombed, will dread.
By your definition I should consider myself lucky, since the melatonin level in my skin differs from that of a black person (although I'm 1/16 Jamaican). I've certainly not gained anything from being white, on the contrary, I feel I'm constantly being judged, solely because of my skin colour. Now, I cannot speak for all of Europe, and certainly not for America, but here in Scandinavia, it's not that bad. Yes, there's always the odd case of someone being discriminated based on their skin colour, but I don't think it's that bad.
I've told everyone at my work, I'm getting new dreads done this summer. Of course, not everyone likes it, but what are they gonna do? It's just fucking hair. As long as I look presentable and do my job, they don't complain. They could fire me for it, but then my union would have a field day. This has nothing to do with the "privilege" of my skin colour.
I'm not saying people shouldn't question their behaviour towards black people, but it's not all about skin colour.

Yes! I agree. I think if more people have something, such as dreads, it becomes more normalized and accepted. If that happens then people will stand up to bosses, if faced with the choice of job or hair, and will more likely have support from co-workers and such. It can become a discussion and something tackled as an issue. I think this world is beautiful because of so many cultures and the sharing of them...the mixing of them. I think it shines a light on things which wouldn't be seen...shows how amazing other cultures and things are...and makes them acceptable. personally I'd love to get braids done, I've wanted to have my hair done in braids since I was in high school and I saw them on a few people.

So many cultures have dreadlocks. I'm white, or rather Celtic, which have a long history of dreads. I have 2 dreads at the back of my head even
    For something to be appropriation:
    1. It has to be a closed culture
    2. It has to harm the original culture
So feather headdresses are best example here. But something all humans can do? Never appropriation
It's like claiming copyright on something in public domain
And yes! Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery!
And sharing cultures is so important for diversity too. This appropriation craziness only breeds segregation

Great video! Highly intelligent man. Thank you!
I had a conversation this morning with a young white store clerk on the topic of so-called “cultural appropriation.” I am a black woman who was wearing a colorful scarf tied around my head in the manner similar to an African woman’s headdress.
She admired it and wistfully stated that she wished SHE could wear one like it. I stated, “ Of course, you can wear one. Why not?”
She hesitated and shrugged saying, “Well...” It took me a few seconds to grasp what she wanted to say.
Then I spoke it for her: “ You mean the whole “cultural appropriation nonsense?”
She seemed grateful that her meaning was both understood and spoken by ME.
So, we -along with a white woman customer who was waiting her turn - were able to enter into dialogue freely about how stupid we thought the very term “cultural appropriation” is.
I encouraged her to go on CZcams and watch some scarf-wrapping videos so she could see that woman of color did not have any copyright on head wraps.
I told her that “cultural appropriation” is as old as human migration from one region of the world to another.
Then I jokingly painted a picture of boatloads of Indian and Korean women coming over here to snatch back their straight hair offf the heads of black and white women who wear weaves and wigs made from their hair.
I told her she has the right to wear whatever she wishes, because we are ALL expressing cultural appropriation in one form or another. It goes way beyond scarves and dreadlocks.
It’s about freedom to decide how to dress, groom, and decorate oneself expressing our God-given free will without interference from someone who can’t seem to use whatever intelligence they DO have to apply it to matters that concern THEMSELVES! 😉
The ONLY way for us ALL to escape being accused of cultural appropriation is. for us ALL to strip naked and go find a fig tree, pull off a leaf, and cover our crotches with it.
Doesn’t the “Good Book” indicate that the fig leaf was the FIRST outfit Adam and Eve made when they realized they were naked?😁
From there I believe they reportedly made themselves some clothes from animal skins. I imagine the other animals - if they could have talked- were probably grumbling about how those humans wearing animal skins were guilty of cultural appropriation, and why couldn’t they just stick to wearing the hairy skin that the Creator gave them?
. Was that, perhaps, the first documented case of cultural appropriation? 🤔 Yawk yawk🤪
By the way, it isn’t only human HAIR that will dread. The FUR of Long-haired cats ( like Persians) and dogs ( like Afghans) will dread too if not groomed.
    Live and let live😇

    • @wetalk6141
      @wetalk6141 Před 5 lety

Kris McDred doesn’t just mean that we all came from the same culture?, because well it’s “natural” through just being human. I don’t think “cultures” exist, at least not in the way you think they do, perhaps there’s only 1 culture. And that. is being human. We have to stop looking at people as individualized sections (color, look of an individual example)“black people”that generalize an entire people. So although I respect your opinions very greatly, and I do believe you are an educated caring person, when you said “we need to solve our own problems” I feel like we as people should help each other. Each one can Teach one. It’s not “your problem” it’s everybody’s. Also I am also getting dreads soon (can’t wait, very excited) hope they look dope!!! Btw your dreads look dope asf bro, they look 👍

There is historical evidence to suggest that some European vikings wore their hair in dreadlocks. Like my man here says, it's a natural occurrence and not only a black culture thing but is found in the heritage of almost every culture. I just got into an argument today with someone who told me that it was racist for white people to have dreadlocks and that's what brought me here.
