  • During Catholic liturgies, priests and deacons dress in symbolic vestments. The word vestment means clothing and each item of clothing that the priests and deacon wears has spiritual significance significance
    The vestments include:
    Alb - The Alb is an all-white gown that looks like a the baptismal garment adults wear during the Easter Vigil. The white in this vestment is a symbol for innocence and purity.
    Cincture - The rope cord used to tie around the alb is called a cincture. This cord is another symbol for purity, particularly for their vow of chastity.
    Chasuble - The vestment we most easily see on a priest is called the chasuble. This is the colorful robe they wear during Mass. The colors that they wear depend on the season or feast day that we are celebrating at the time:
    Green = Ordinary Time
    Red = Good Friday, Pentecost, Feast Days for Martyrs
    White = Christmas and Easter
    Purple = Advent and Lent
    Rose (Pink) = Guadete Sunday during Advent and Laetare Sunday during Lent
    Dalmatic - Instead of a chasuble, which only a priest will wear, a deacon wears a dalmatic. The main difference is that a dalmatic has sleeves while a priest's chasuble is more open on the sides. The Dalmatic is a symbol of joy and happiness.
    Stole - The stole looks like a long sash or scarf. A stole shows that a priest or deacon is on official sacramental duty. The priest always kisses the cross in the middle of the stole before putting it on. The stole is a symbol of authority. The priest wears a stole around the neck hanging down the front of his body while a deacon wears a stole diagonally across his chest.

    Amice - A priest or deacon wraps this small square cloth around his neck under the other garments. It is a symbol of the strength and defense against the assaults of the devil.
