  • Everyone knows how to spot a bishop in a crowd: he's the one with the funny hat and big staff. But what exactly is a bishop, what does he do, and how has our understanding of the role changed over the years?

    My daughter is 40 yrs old now. When she was 3, we went to my uncle’s Catholic funeral. Not sure why, but a bishop was officiating. He had on the mitre cap and green embroidered stole. It was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. My little girl piped up in a really loud voice, “Mom, is that God up there?” The whole church cracked up. The bishop tried so hard to get composed so he could carry on with the funeral, but he couldn’t stop laughing.

We are sooo very close to each other still after all these centuries; like siblings who had a falling out and don't like to talk to each other. We are still family, and we really need our parents to knock us upside the head and lock us in a room until we figure out how to act like a family again 😃

    • @reamus9102
      @reamus9102 Před 3 lety +4

      @@trevorhanlin4247 Of course, the ultimate question, right? Honestly, I think the biggest issue is the authority and doctrinal infallibility of the Pope. I think Papal primacy itself shouldn't be an issue, and in fact the bishop of Rome was respected and seen as the 'first among equals' before the schism. I feel like this is even going in the right direction with the current and past couple Popes, as they have met the Eastern Patriarchs and called each other brothers. But, to the Eastern Orthodox doctrinal matters need to be decided by ecumenical council, rather than Papal edicts or encyclicals.
      Some people will bring up the matter of the filioque, but I honestly think that is mostly a non-issue except for the most hardcore doctrinal nerds; seems like an issue with semantics to me, rather than any real substantive difference in our understanding of the Trinity.
      I imagine any sort of reunion with the Western church would still maintain their "Latin Rites' while the East still retains their "Eastern Rites." So little differences can (and should) continue; as long as we get the important things right then I see no reason why we can't maintain our diversity. So for the eucharist, I don't see a problem with having unleavened bread in a Latin Rite diocese, and risen bread in a Eastern Rite diocese. Some on both sides will probably say it's a huge deal, but really, I think God cares more about us coming together in Communion than he does about the yeast content of our eucharist bread, haha.
      And of course, Catholicism would have to accept Eastern iconography. And now that I type that out I realize I have basically no idea what Catholicism thinks of Eastern iconography...🤔haha. In the same vein, Eastern Orthodox would have to lighten up and not frown at the statues and holy artistic art forms of the West. Hopefully we can just accept each others religious art as made for the glorification of God and veneration of the saints, and avoid silly accusations of things like idolatry, which clearly has no actual bearing on either churche's usage of their art.
      That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Let me know if you (or anyone else) can think of anything else; I'm interested in hearing other perspectives on this.

      @@reamus9102 Glory to Jesus Christ!
      I agree with much of what you stated. I think one of the big differences is that I feel most of this has already happened. For instance, Eastern Theology is fully accepted in the Catholic Church. Not only is it woven throughout the Catechism but is living in the Eastern Churches.
      As a good example of this, and to point on the filioque is what The Catholic Church has to say about that whole bit in it's official teaching in the CCC. Paragraphs 246-248. Basically, it holds that the theology behind both is valid. In the Eastern Churches it is omitted in every rite and language I have been to, and in the Latin church it is omitted when celebrating with the eastern churches (Orthodox or Catholic) and I believe it is always omitted in Greek.
      To point about papal infallibility. I think the average Orthodox (and frankly the average Catholic) hold a protestant conception of what is meant and taught about papal infallibility. We as Orthodox and Catholic Brothers in Christ hold that it is possible for a man to speak infallibly, even our protestant brothers profess that men wrote the word of God down to make the bible! And indeed we both agree that the bishops in unison with the pope spoke infallibly during the first 3-8 ecumenical councils (usually 7, but there is some nuance there between eastern churches) The teaching is an extension of this same genesis, also, the parameters for a pope to speak ex cathedra are so restrictive it may be easier to call a council with all our eastern brothers! (seriously, twice in history, possibly three if you count Peter doing it)
      I have had interesting discussions on what constitutes an ecumenical council. There are even Orthodox churches that disagree on how many there have been (look up the 4th council of Constantinople, I believe the Russian Orthodox and Catholics both hold it as such but it is actually two different councils!) My thing is that the definition the Catholic Church uses works for all the jointly recognized councils and those it only recognizes after. Where many arguments on the Orthodox side would logically disclude one or more of the first 7. Would appreciate your thoughts.
      I think the biggest barrier to us celebrating the Divine Liturgy together (well the whole churches, you are welcome at any time to celebrate the DL with me and my family) is really that of politics and trust. Politics because there is a lot of history and power, on both sides, and those worldly things are hard to completely set aside. On the Trust side there is the factor that there have been some major issues in the Catholic Church when it comes to the Eastern Parishes. It only takes one jerk bishop in the midwest who is on a power hungry tirade to rid the world of married priests and before you know it a suis juris church is broken in have an ripped from the mother church to form the OCA. (seriously, I apologize on behalf of all Catholics for the "work" of John Ireland)
      Lastly, I think that it would be a good thing for Eastern Orthodox to seek out their Eastern Catholic Brothers, especially those that know their faith well. (Actually, all Catholics should get to know their "other lung" as Pope St. JPII put it)
      God Bless you my Brother and I look forward to your response!

    Great video; in the end it all falls apart without the papacy. One reason the papacy developed into what it is today is because it was needed. Peter alone is given the keys to bind and loose. Bishops in the East after Nicea were heavily involved with Arianism in their theology. They got together in Synods; people need clarification on issues. Look at the current schisms in Orthodoxy today. The papacy alone maintains and upholds the church.

    The idea of Bishops was part of the Council of Nice in 325 AD, Canon IV, VI, and VII. In his book, written in 2005, Cardinal Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI, discusses with the Orthodox Metropolitan of Bishop of Switzerland, Damiskinos, about the error he called, "Roman Centrism," that he stated many Roman Catholic Theologians have. This was mentioned by Priest Casey in this video clip. I noticed what I thought was a picture of Erasmus as part of the Reformation movement. Erasmus was a Catholic Theologian who understood about the problem of Roman Centrism, (probably wrote the story about Pope Julius), and also was the writer of the Greek New Testament, A Roman Catholic mind you, the author of the "Textus Receptus," used in the translation of Tyndale's, Luther's, and the King James Version Translations. As a Protestant, and even a Roman Catholic should think about this, is what respect should we give a Bishop of another part of Christianity. Should we not give respect to an actual Christian, God Fearing Bishop, say of the Orthodox Church if we are Roman Catholic? I think we should. A Christian should consider the two verses given in Francis Shaeffer's book, "The Mark of the Christian," John 13:34,35, and 17:21, and think of the implications that Francis Schaeffer points out in his book regarding these two passages.

    You are correct that protestants, in churches that have Bishops, have a different role for Bishops - but not completely different. Our Bishops are elected by a General Conference composed of an equal body elected by clergy and laity separately. They serve for a time and then step down to serve as Elders again (although they are usually known as "Bishop Emeritus" for the rest of their lives. However, Bishops do have the sole authority to ordain clergy - so there are some similarities.

    I would disagree with your characterization of bishops in the high church Protestant denominations. If anything, without a Pope, the bishops of the Lutheran, Methodist, or Episcopal (it's even in the name!) denominations have more power over doctrine and high policy than do Catholic Bishops. True, they are elected, rather than appointed, but it is their pronouncements, operating in a collegial body which determine the doctrines and policies of their churches.

    • @theosteven3362

      To be honest this is all paradox. In certain times the model of bishop as supreme teacher in theology might seem to be the one. But in other times it just leads to a quite mess. In some ages, even in earlier time of church it was the bishop that led people astray from the true orthodoxy. Making a moderate model is quite not simple.

  • @pamcatap2214

    Father, what's the line that borders the pope and a bishop? I mean, you said that the Catholic Church is now or bringing back what bishop really is, as a central power of the diocese and it can govern freely in communion with one another. Which means, there could be a possibility of bishop opposing other bishop or Bishop opposing the pope as bishop and pope is somewhat equal, as I understood in your explanation.
    Does it mean no hierarchy from top? Which could lead to possible collapse of church?

    • @pamcatap2214
      @pamcatap2214 Před 3 lety +1

      @John i agree on that sir. But what Fr. Casey said confuses me. The Pope actually, in my own understanding serves as the one on TOP and yes I know that he allows bishops to exercise their power to their diocese freely but, what's the distinction?
      As Fr. Casey's video tells that it's must be collegiality? Hope to explain the line that borders the role, power, authority of bishop to pope because as I see it, the possibility of bishop opposing bishop, cardinal opposing cardinal and even worst, bishop opposing pope IS AS THIN AS A SINGLE STRAND OF HAIR.
      I DIDN'T say that, it must be centralised power but up to what extent are these powers and authorities of bishops to pope and let's not forget the papal supremacy here.
      Thanks you.

    • @VindicAlpha
      @VindicAlpha Před 3 lety +1

      @@pamcatap2214 Theoretically speaking, the line between a Bishop and the Pope is close to nothing. The importance of the Pope comes from two things. One is the tradition (and debatable historical record) that the seat of Rome is Apostolic, being founded by Saint Peter. This is shared by the four other ancient Patriarchal seats of Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria and Constantinople. These were the most important Bishops of the early Catholic and Orthodox Church.
      Two, in 325 (the Council of Nicaea), Rome, Alexandria and Antioch were recognized as the most important bishops and, of them, Rome was named as "primus inter pares" (first amongst equals), because it was founded by the leader of the Apostles Saint Peter (and also saw his martyr and that of Saint Paul). Some documents in the 1st and 2nd Centuries seem to indicate this was already an informal position Rome held. In 381, Constantinople was raised to a Patriarchal seat (founded by Saint Andrew). In 451, Jerusalem joined them (ironically the last, despite being founded by James 'the brother of Christ' and being considered the Mother Church by Orthodoxy).
      To resume, Rome was first amongst equals because of Saint Peter being known as its founder. Nicaea formalized it because it had gained traction (and Constantine wanted someone he could address directly in case of "issues" with the Christian population).
      Matters complicated after the fall of the Western Empire, but that's a tale for another time.

      @@pamcatap2214 I mean, the very phrase "First amongst equals" answers the question. The Pope can decide divergences in the faith because he's elected from a body of highly respected and influential bishops/cardinals and his voice, as Pope and Patriarch of the West, holds a lot of traditional weight under a more collegial organization. With the weight of the tradition of the Pope as supreme bishop of the Church, it means that 99% of Catholic bishops still look to Rome first, but they can decide how to express the faith in their diocese (in accordance with the broad dogma and doctrine of the Church).
      Can a bishop oppose the Pope? Yes, but he better be able to back up his ideas before a synod or council and his fellow bishops are going to give their all to pick his arguments apart. It takes a great plurality of bishops agreeing on opposing the Pope to override him and that is hard to do. One bishop opposing the Pope happens all the time, most of them opposing the Pope is rarer.
      And can bishops disagree with Councils? Yes! While the Council of Nicaea declared Arianism a heresy (and Saint Nicolas famously punched Arius in the face during a debate), it persisted and caused Trinitarism (the accepted orthodoxy of the Councils) a lot of trouble over the following centuries. Ideally speaking, however, an Ecumenical Council of the Church is the accepted orthodoxy to follow by all bishops of the same Church.
      Hence the importance of the first Seven Ecumenical Councils of the Church, who literally define what it means to be Christian for Catholics and Orthodox. (This is a broad generalization. Some Orthodox Churches of the East don't acknowledge all of them but are still Trinitarians. Some not so old restorationists branches in the USA acknowledge none of them because they're not Trinitarians.)
      Does the Pope allow other bishops to exercise their function? To my knowledge, Yes and no. To be precise, he allows bishops to be in communion with the Catholic Church of Rome. He can excommunicate a bishop and his flock from communion with the Catholic Church of Rome, but he can't say "you're no longer Christians". He can say "You are no longer Roman Catholics".
      I, of course, will bow to the good Father Casey if he interjects, but as I've studied early Christianity, I felt I could contribute my understanding of the questions and the mechanics of the early Church.

      @@VindicAlpha thank you. I am more convinced of your answers. It shed light. I am just having this fear that the entire church collapse because bishop could and might oppose the Pope and the ONENESS OF THE CHURCH be jeopardised.

    When the Apostle Paul writes of bishops he meant something very different from what you mean today, Father.
    For one thing, the Catholic archbishop today has much more (absolute) power, certainly over the priests and laity of the diocese.
    You fail to tell us that the power of bishops changed in the medieval period.
    A cardinal can only be questioned by another cardinal or by the pope, something the Reformers found unbiblical, indeed Calvin describes the princes of the Catholic Church as the pope's *tuppeny bishops*.
    It was the cardinal of Ireland who swore to silence the parents of a boy who had been sexually abused by a priest, threatening the parents with excommunication if they did not sign a document of non-disclosure.
    In my Catholic childhood in the 1950s the bishop came through to give us the sacrament of confirmation, but it seemed like a legalistic procedure:
    We never saw him again, not even in our Catholic high school, and no one ever taught us the need to be born again, something that is preached continually in the humble backstreet evangelical churches in my home city (Glasgow, Scotland).
    The homosexual cardinal of Scotland, Keith O'Brien, was never outed for his immoral behaviour. Why? No priest can call out a cardinal.
    The early church would never have countenanced O'Brien's abuse of power, because no one man would have possessed such power.

    Hello father, I was born and baptised in Portugal in St. Peter's Church, I'm currently faithless, but I live learning about religions, Christianity in special, and I was wondering if you could explain all the different beliefs within Christianity (Mormons, orthodox, protestants, Catholics...), love your videos!

      It is not the job of a Catholic priest to tell you about Mormonism and different religions. That is crazy question He is a Catholic priest and not a mormon priest. I advise you to return to your Catholic faith else you go to hell

      Orthodox and Catholics have similar beliefs (trinity, perpetual virginity of Mary, intercession of the Saints, transubstantition and the teachings of the Fathers of the church ecc.) but they differ since the Catholics think that the Holy Ghost proceeds from both the Father and the Son, whilee the Orthodox don't; and the catholics believe in the superiority of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) and the Pope infallibility. Protestants is an umbrella term for many different churches which have different liturgiesand liturgies. The Mormons aren't really christians since the both believe in the Bible and in the Book of Mormon which was written in 1830 by Joseph Smithbut which is said to be the last revelation of God. Hope it helps
