I like how the host roasts them for missing "one of the most famous pieces," for Beethoven's sixth. Average non-musician will feel smart if they can recognize Fur Elise, Moonlight Sonata, and the fifth symphony. And even then, they won't recognize the B sections because they have literally never heard a Beethoven piece in full. Main point is I don't think the sixth is even close to that level of recognition.

I'm the moron at 7:55! Still wake in cold sweats sometimes at the memory of that...
In the run-up to the show I tried to cram as much classical music into my head as I could, and as soon as the piece started playing I knew it was Beethoven. But once I buzzed, I realised I was supposed to name the symphony as well and couldn't remember for the life of me which one it was, and rather than say Beethoven and give the other team a clue (in case they hadn't figured out which composer it was), I thought it was better to stay quiet.
Surprised my team-mates didn't murder me after that.

There is a reason why only one person answers the bonus questions, and that's because although the teams debate the answer the captain is always the one to answer. If he or she isn't sure, the captain can 'nominate' another team member to answer.
For the starter question, anyone can buzz in with the answer. If they get it right the team wins 10 points. If they get it wrong they lose 5 points.
Universities hold internal competitions to pick the team members, and the whole thing is extremely competitive. Universities take University Challenge very seriously indeed.

For those who aren't British, this is University Challenge: a seriously challenging quiz show between universities. Each university field a team of 4 (Oxford and Cambridge field one team of four per constituent college of which there are around 30 at both unis. People often complain this is really unfair because it gives the two unis many more shots at winning, but it also probably prevents them winning every year as it splits their brightest students up. An Oxbridge college still regularly wins despite this and so would likely be unbeatable if they could field a team of the four best from the whole uni.) The questions are exceedingly hard and the contestants are some of the brightest people at each university. Jeremy Paxman hosts and he was a UK journalist widely known as being very tough on the people he interviewed, particularly UK politicians. He now basically just hosts this. Hope this helps :)

It was so shocking to me that Britten's music was recognized but not the opening melody of Beethoven's 6th.

@@iodeleon1440 not really opera is usually regarded separately. It's like calling musicals modern music. They share a lot of similarities but the bulk of opera time wise is not played by the classical canon orchestras. Just some overtures

@@charlietian9843 I disagree. Operas (especially orchestral accompaniments) were written in classical styles like all other classical music. Plus the classical composers composed the operas. Yes, they’re a different branch, but they’re still classical music. Are you saying William Tell Overture and Ride of the Valkyries aren’t classical pieces? Because they are from operas.

As a german speaking person, I find it always quite amusing when Brett and Eddy adress Mozart's Nachtmusik as "Eine kleine". You can't leave the "Nachtmusik" (night music), that's the actual name, "Eine kleine" means "a small" and really doesn't say anything. Of course, you know what they mean but lingustically, it just doesn't make sense at all.
