In this video, I reveal the work I've undertaken on machining and assembling the crucial components needed for constructing the Y-axis frame in my new DIY CNC project. The video has a runtime of 50 minutes, and I've made a deliberate choice to maintain its raw and detailed nature to provide you with the most comprehensive information possible. I'm thrilled with reaching this initial project milestone and can't wait to share it with all of you. Moving forward, my focus will shift towards constructing the X-axis gantry, which will serve as a useful jig for aligning the Y-axis linear rails, ensuring a seamless and efficient operation.

I will follow this build.
Try to fill those gaps between the bars with something. Cutting forces are higher than we think, and your wasteboard will go down during cuts.
This is why I have built the base of my machine from structural concrete.
Good luck with the build bruh 🙌🏻
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback. Thanks not a bad idea to be fair and certainly wouldn't hurt. I'll probably cut some MDF out on the machine to fit in the gaps 👍🏻
When you are drilling holes, you should use a center finder. It would save time and frustration! When you drop the center finder down, it will wobble if it's off center. They aren't just for milling machines! Once you are centered, you can clamp down and don't have to worry about if you are off center as long as you don't bump the piece. then you can start drilling and use cutting fluid right from the start!
Nice start!
Thanks!
Looking good! Great to see someone do this with commonly available tools.
Thank you. I agree, a lot of the other builds I've seen use welders, manual milling machines etc. Don't get me wrong, better tools will give you a better result, but they're not affordable or accessible for most people
I like the long video format.
this was very good to see the whole process and sharing your experience/knowledge
Glad it was helpful!
Thumb up!
much appreciated!
One tip you might find it easier to use a small drill first say 3mm then open up the hole to finished size this is a more accurate way of drilling holes in the correct position
Thanks for the tip! That is certainly something I learned very quickly and I did discuss it a little toward the end of the video. Definitely the way to go and I will be using that method for the rest of the build :)
Good start mate 👍 what's the overall weight on the machine when finished?
Thank you, I'm not sure on that yet, but I'll measure the components as I go and total everything 👍🏻
43:28 nice music, what is it?

@@thehardwareguy thanks!
Fantastic progress Gareth, well done. 🦾. Thanks for sharing this level of detail, really appreciated, will be hopefully following suit and replicating. Out of interest which oil were you using when on the pillar drill? Best, James.
Thanks James! The cutting oil is called 'MolySlip - Metal Working Fluid'. Any generic cutting oil will do the job though
Nice start!
