Munro Bagging Return to the Buachaille Etive Mór (Stob Na Broige Unbagged), 13.07.2019

  • On the Friday of the 12th of July I headed up to Glencoe to give my friend Jack an excuse to try out his new camper van. Jack has only ever climbed the Buachaille and that was in 1991 and his effort back then proved fruitless as he was denied a view.Along for the journey was another friend called Hammy. Hammy had never climbed any Scottish Mountains let alone a Munro, so what better one to start with than the mighty Buachaille.
I had planned to climb across to Stob Na Broige as I didn't have the time last September after I'd climbed the curved ridge up to Stob Dearg, but the weather had other ideas...
Buachaille Etive Mor: 1022m, is one of the best known and loved of all the Munro peaks. The epic view of the mountain from the main A82 road makes it appear quite unassailable and is one of the most photographed sights in Scotland.
Stob Na Doire (Munro Top: 1010m).

Good video Douglas. Looked like a good climb. The mist looked bad. My wife gets worried when it gets to mist. Thanks Steve

Aye Steve, it really didn’t pick up much until we were firmly headed back in the opposite direction and by then the enthusiasm to turn back and try again was gone lol.
      Some you win buddy.
Still had a great weekend none the less, and the mountain will still be there in another day.
      Thanks for commenting.
All the best to you and your good lady.

Nice one Douglas! Its a shame it was so cloudy. Feels like it's like that constantly just now!! Like you said, Stob na Broige will be waiting for next time! :D Thanks for sharing. Kris.

Aye Kris, I’ve had a good run of great weather until that day. My friend Jack was convinced he was jinxed. Lol. (Even though he did get a view in the end).
The next day I was climbing Stob Bán and the weather was terrific!
      Maybe he was right! Lol
      Best Regards Kris,
      Keep Climbing,

Hey alex, thanks for taking the time to comment. I first drove through Glencoe on a school trip back in the 70’s and I was stunned by its vastness and beauty, and it never left me. I hope the weather is great for you. The Buachaille is simply amazing an amazing mountain whatever route up you take.
      Keep Climbing,
      Douglas 😁🙌🏼⛰🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You are too kind Alex, but it’s true all the same! Hitting the big 50 in October and hoping to get to 50 Munro’s between the and my next Birthday. Currently at 34 so not doing too badly target wise.
Thanks again for making my night! lol.

Great video 👍🏻 Watching this I think I may have done the same as you guys on Stob na Doire. It was poor visibility and I took the wrong route from the Summit top and ended up in Glen Etive. I had to walk all the way back round to the A82. I now wish I had retraced my steps back. I will get Stob na Broige one of these days 👍🏻

Hi Thomas, thanks for your comment. Aye it was quite deceptive when we reached Stob Na Doire so I’ll look forward to a return visit on a clearer day to see exactly where we went wrong. Shame you had that long back round to your car in the end also. Some you win I say. Still, having a good and safe time wins over risks and bad decisions especially when taking less experienced folk with you as in my case here.
      All the best Thomas,
      Keep climbing.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I was up that exact same route a couple of weeks ago (vlog appearing soon) and it didn't look as though you were that far from Stob na Broige, which is a real shame.
My weather was much the same to begin but did take a turn. Good effort on Hammy getting his first Munro and here's to many more.
Again, thanks for sharing and I look forward to your next outing.

Thanks for commenting Brian, I’ll look forward to your vlog. Loving your adventures with your wee four legged friend.
I’ve got 3 rescue dogs, but they are far to nervous and traumatised to come out with me on the mountains.
All the best and keep climbing my friend.

What a coincidence. We have recently rehomed a rescue dog who had apparently avoided the Thai meat trade. He is super nervous of trucks and men... except now me.
I've thought about trying him on the hills but he would need to be introduced slowly and on a lead.
I'm glad you enjoy the vlogs. I've still got my own reservations about my work at the minute but starting to find a style I'm happy with.
      All the best,

The wee soul! 😔 so glad he’s got a brilliant forever home.
Ours all came from horrible cramped killing stations in Hungary. The local council round up the strays (of which there are many), and they are put on 30 days death row.
Just wish I could rescue them all mate!
Keep going with the vlogs. You’re being yourself and that comes across as authentic and personable to viewers. You’ll evolve more of what fits you as a style and what you don’t think fits as you go.
The historical information you’ve shared in some of your vlogs has been brilliant and I for one love learning new things about this amazing country we live in.
Do it for your own pleasure firstly, that enjoyment is what positively affects others and your audience will organically find you.
Best Regards and keep going buddy 😉👍🏼
