Gotta say, growing up kids used to be teased about coming from huts and grass homes, and it was mocked as being typically poor and black. Seeing how its being embraced in this day and age, is quite a bittersweet feeling, with the tongue cringing at nostalgia and its seemingly forgotten origin.

When I was 14 yrs old, I visited my 1st cousin and she was living in an Adobe house, at the time I thought my cousin is so poor they had to build a house out of mud and straw! Little that I know is one of best type of houses you can build! Since I known of Cop houses; that's the only type of house I will have now🐝🐝🐝

Exactly! This is why I want to build and live in a natural, handbuilt house. Plus the low carbon footprint and the creative, nurturing environment you can create for yourself and your family. People have been building with earth for thousands of years, all over the world, for a reason.

I’m working with the homeless and have been racking my brain on dwellings and finances … I believe this may be the solution! At least for some.
I’ve just put the word out so we’ll see who many would be up for the adventure and physical task. The next step is funding!

My house and my shed were built like this. I wish I saw this 6 years ago and just do it myself. The only thing I would have had to fix is the roof and foundation. Darn. But now I can do something about my ugly fence and make it in to an art work project

Natural materials is health and best for home building, especially when one is enclosed at night breathing in non-toxic materilas.

I just removed our mud house back to earth to build new house out of straw.i did as much as I could but ceiling were coming down I wish I'd had money for cedar shingles.that kept it for 80 years

I love the concept- however also the fact that they are well connected with friends to save $ on the materials + land etc....today for a regular couple I feel it would be much harder to afford such a concept. Also seeing the houses selling for half a million is discouraging as the material I thought was meant to be cheaper thus making the house affordable to resell for the market, but seems everyone capitalizes. Would love to see a more positive , inspiring, realistic model for everyday folks trying to set this way of life. Good on these people tho that they are trying with their money to make a more eco model, but still.....luck / connections / money is on these folks side.

What are the bars between bales? Appears to be conduit.
It's common to use Bamboo both sides of the wall through tied. It's very strong and flexible.
Will it stand in an earthquake?
I noticed at 7:44 there is a view of the ICF that was used in this project. I am not against what they are doing, but you could have mentioned that you also used ICF. In other words, "Insulated Concrete Forms" So it is NOT all "Straw Bale". Just keep things honest is my point. Regardless, nice build.

it seems earthquake regulations are high. When it comes to straw, what about fire regulations?
Strawbale construction has been fire tested, and it does very well. If covered with an earthen plaster it's even better of course.
clay doesnt burn well straw is hard to get started for burning
They should set up a straw house liaison to make it easier to setup

The thick layer of about 3-5" of clay plaster then covered with lime plaster make the bales fully protected by the equivalent of cement or stone facade
and... what about mice and others?

Hey- it is important to manage your storage of bales before installation to prevent them from becoming rodent habitat when they are still our in the open. However once the bales are sealed with plaster rats will quickly want to tunnel out as they need an exit and point of entry to their nests . Once sealed with full plaster or sheathing the bales are very well protected from intrusion.
