If you ask me, some of the greatest stories in Melee are just singular sets. Regardless of the era of Smash you started playing in, there exists a deep appreciation of how the game, its techniques, and its most fierce rivalries have evolved over the years.
And in this 10-part documentary series, I’ll be taking a deep dive into some of the sets that have been considered by many to be the greatest.

Have you considered using Kofi instead of Patreon? The overall cost is much much lower.
@@xeno-eh4pq I actually don't know much about Kofi but I can definitely look into it if it can help out. Is it just a lower percentage take than Patreon? What other differences are there?
Afaik Patreon takes 8% per Donation vs Kofi just taking about 5 bucks per month. Which means you'll profit if you make more than ~60 bucks a month
@@xeno-eh4pq Oh wow. I think I'm on a legacy plan for Patreon which only takes 5% but that can still be a pretty sizable amount of flat vs. percentage. If I could transfer my current audience to Kofi I'll definitely consider it, just may be tough to get everyone to move

It was the first Melee match I had ever watched live. Came home from work, my buddy who introduced me to Melee said Genesis was on and I should tune in. Turned on Twitch. The match had just started. I have never played a match of Melee in my life. But have been a spectator for the last 6 or so years because of this match.

My professor in college told us to make a presentation in college and I literally made a video about this set and presented it in front of the class! There was one kid at the front who played SB4 and he was loosing his shit the whole set.
What I wanna know is how the rest of the class and your professor reacted
@@jonathanc3001 The video is actually on my YT profile. Most people were on their phones, but the professor seemed to be pretty interested in the concept of Esports. It was pretty sick to have at least one person understand the hype and insanity of the set despite never having played the game.
Whenever I see someone ask what the greatest Melee set of all time is, the first thing that always comes to mind is Mang0's Firebird on Pokemon Stadium
I wish I knew who it was playing, but there's an incredible Peach - Puff set that I regard as the best. I think turndownforwalt made a video on it.

I got chills as soon as you said at the beginning “10 part documentary series.” Going to be an incredible look-back at some sets.
I was travelling in the US when G4 was on, and decided to travel to San Jose without my family or partner for the weekend to attend.
It remains without a doubt one of, if not the greatest weekends of my life, with this set being the peak. I didn't know a soul there, but that energy in the crowd truely brought everyone together. I was hugging random strangers left and right between the games.

This is a really good video! If I might make a suggestion, when playing important clips of the game (like that Mango up b) it might work better to put in the audio and commentary and let the game speak for itself. I feel like hearing the crowd reaction and seeing the clips play out would help to highlight stuff like that.

Tennis guy here - loved the video! I’ve always felt that Mango is the Federer of Melee. Both being the “flow state” player, with styles that many believe represent how the game is meant to be played. Both generate the same hype and are no doubt the faces of their respective craft as well.
I was there for this. Life changing moment. I can still hear the mango cheers and feel the adrenaline. I was standing by the door next to JWittz, who was playing ROB in 4.

I remember how I felt watching from Sweden. That year I had hosted several larger EU tournaments and the sheer amount of work meant I was kind of in a place where I was on the brink of taking a long break from the game. Then this set happened and that fire was not only reignited but arguably greater than ever.

I remember seeing this live in-person and the energy in the room at the end of game four was incredible. A magical set indeed.
There's a very short bit of awkwardness in the script of this one but I think you did a great job of telling the story behind this set. I encourage everybody to watch it online themselves, the mood was electric!
I remember the day after this set happened I showed it to someone at my work who knew nothing about competitive melee, and eve he was blown away by the story-telling through the gameplay. Thanks for reminding me of it!

What's funny is that this was followed by one of the greatest Grand Finals beatdowns in Melee history, where Armada 3-0d Mang0 in grands in 9 minutes with 2 2 stocks and a 3 stock. Just goes to show how insane Armada was.

Since 2017 i've been a spectator of Smash (Melee first and Ultimate then, more than often watching both now) and watching this has made me realize my attachment to this series and how many memories i have with it

when he landed the famous combo on ibdw i physicly jump from my bed , screaming with no sound coming out
and that was one man alone at 4 am
there was a crowd of like 400 people in the same state some thousand of kilometers away
that moment melee was not poetry , it was gaming distiled to perfection

0:01 now that I think about it there's probably some crazy storylines in competitive slapping as well.
This was the first competitive melee set I'd ever seen! years after being obsessed with the game as a kid and checking in what was happening. Didn't even know who was playing who, but the thrill of it started my curiosity into the scenes history and have been following ever since. Now recently have finally become involved in competing myself.

I saw the game live on stream and remembered I had school the next day, the tournament ended at 2am my time but it was all worth it because of this set.
So cool that you used the Federer vs Nadal reference. Their 2008 Wimbledon match was so good the is a documentary on it!
Phenomenal video once again. I recently spent about a week going through a lot of melee's history for most iconic sets. I don't know if everyone else feels the same, but I really hope some doubles sets make it into this series. The rivalry between PewFat and team UGS is as compelling as any singles story.
Glad I also feel the same about seeing a tournament in person vs at home. The energy and atmosphere you get is so great and makes the games all the more exciting to watch.

To this day, this is the only set that I remember exactly where I was when I saw it. Sitting at Radjunk in Pensacola, the whole tourney I was in stopped to watch both Mango Leffen sets from G4. Love this game.

Amazing video. I think now you should turn your attention to why Prog and D1 were so important in the scenes formative years. These kids dont know. They gave so much time and money and overcoming adverity to foster this community into what it is today
If I can go back in time to when my younger self watched the Smash Brother’s Doc when it first came out, I’d tell my younger self that the documentaries and content to come are unmatched.
