For people commenting about the interpolation yes, it does look off. Was just a misclick and premiere isn't exactly the best at previewing effects like that. We go next.
learning to play with and around crouch cancel is definitely the hurdle for us oldheads to get over. a big part of me still feels like i’m laming someone out
Similar timeline as shield grabbing for me: •Learned to shield grab/CC •felt busted +fraudulent •went against players aware of it •they made cc/shield grab feel redundant + immediately clocked I was dependent on it
As an oldhead with hands that barely work these days, I was so effective against young bloods for a probably totally unfair timespan/effort spent beacause I literally just always braindead hold down when I'm about to get hit at low% and basically always have, lol. Not because of a galaxy brain either, I would also usually shield, so really I'd only get something off a shield poke or if my shield didn't come up in time. But in any case, everyone does it better than me now so I wouldn't have shit even if I still played. It's just funny looking back at the "that only worked because you're better than me" complaints when I grabbed them out of something I "shouldn't" have and seeing that it was at least somewhat based on something legit.
@@tiporandom1452true, but some people would rather not play at all than to play “lame”, whatever the subjective definition they have of that word is lol
I think a big reason a lot of top players felt safe to practice more crouching and running options was no longer having to fight Armada in bracket runs. Peach blender is very real and even with his Fox, Armada was intimately aware of this mechanic and used it to his advantage as early as 2014 or maybe sooner.
Not a lot of people could go into as much depth into something as trivial as SDI down/crouching being more offensive than defensive. You have great knowledge, unique commentary and great editing. Don't be surprised if you gain a lot of popularity on your next video. The effort put in is worth well more than the wait. Put school first and we'll all be here whenever you have the time to work on another project!
Great vid! one thing I do wish ppl acknowledged more though is the difference between ASDI down and Crouch Cancel. You can only Crouch Cancel in the crouch animation. All that Crouch Cancel does is reduce knockback. ASDI down is what lets you be actionable immediately out of getting hit. Of course when you CC you are automatically doing ASDI down as well, but not necessarily the other way around! Yes you can cancel the run animation into crouch quite quickly but if you are getting hit out of run you are not CCing you are just doing ASDI down. I think the difference is important for people learning the game to understand so we shouldn't be using the terms interchangeably as it just gives people a slightly wrong understand of such an important mechanic to the game.
I was kinda confused about that too, the video sorta lumps them in as one thing. Also, can you use the left stick to ASDI? For whatever reason, I thought you have to use the C-Stick to ASDI
@@professorc-dawgscastle8591 I believe you can ASDI with the control stick, but the game prio's the c-stick if you are holding it. But the main reason ppl use the c-stick is because it's a better option select
This was an insanely good video. I sat down with Wizzy and played friendlies (Puff vs Falcon) for like an hour at Genesis, and afterwards while he gave me tips one of the big things was 'I think one of the big things you can do more is hold down/crouch more between things, when you look at good players they're always holding down', and then watching this was a spot on example of him holding down well. Keep it up!
Dope video ur 100% About cc changing the game in a good way, I always thought it was bad because when I think of CCing is the samus sitting in the corner
I also though cc'ing was gonna degenerate the game, I remember a couple of mango streams/videos where he shared that though too. I think what ended up happening is that people (top player mainly) just adjusted to It making the game its just a deeper rock-paper-scissor. I don't see any universal mechanic having a similar effect on the future other than power shielding, I really thought that after what Lod showed (tilt-smash-special out of power shield) when he went balls deep a while ago it would be similar to shield-drops and CC's had done in the last 10 years.

Ive watched most tournaments since 2014, but don't actually play melee. Before this video i knew that crouching was good, but not exactly why. This video made me learn a ton, thanks. Also that n0ne vs m2k set is one of my favorite sets i remember to this day, thank you for making me realize why n0ne won that match.
Great video, I love the representation of cc/asdi as an offensive mechanic in contrast to the normal defensive one. I also never knew how critical it was during n0ne vs M2K at GOML. Mad respect for the music choices too, every song used here is incredible. Cave Story, Plok, and Silver Surfer are all such good soundtracks.
The biggest part of the "no fear" playstle is NOT BEING AFRAID of making small trades for big ones. Heavy weights like bowser and lil mac understand this innately because of their armor. What every character doesn't know is that they HAVE positive trade potential, they just have to look a little, in Saiyan to do so.
Great video - for sure pre-pandemic crouch cancel was definitely more defensive as a technique, as people were using it more to counter approaches, resulting in people dash dancing and carefully spacing even more But as players have gradually got even faster in the post-slippi era, weaving in little down presses into your gameplay in all sorts of spots has made crouch cancel an integral part of fluid, generallt agressive gameplay. The Wizzy and Cody examples you provided are pretty different use cases, but flowing between one and the other is becoming a hallmark of top level gameplay and for sure will be integral to the game going forward. We truly never know where the meta is gonna go next!
I love how crouch cancel made melee a game with dept defensively. Just as the other FGCs with "do you need to block high or low", now in melee there is that "do you gonna crouch cancel the light move or shield the heavy move".
the laggy run turnaround animation is my least favorite thing about smash's movement. i wish you could just dashdance at any distance and that animation just didnt exist
Before the 5 gods of Melee began their reign of terror over the world of Smash Brothers, one player named Isai achieved legendary status before anyone else and for a time was thought to be the best in the world. When asked to share his secret of success his response was simple... "don't get hit." This philosophy was adopted by his friend and successor Ken, and was later perfected by the 5 gods. It's taken decades, but Melee is finally beginning to evolve past that simple rule.
Im really surprised you never brought up crouch out of run -> dash back as a dash dance extension (known as the cactuar dash) Crouching was brought up, and so was asdi down during run, but not actually crouching OUT OF RUN, which is a really big part of a lot of characters meta Being able to crouch out of run is also why foxes running shine works! Casual/ult player opinion on Melee seems to be very anti crouch cancelling and I have trouble explaining the benefits of the mechanic, this is by far the best video I've seen on it. Really well done.
Run up crouch cancel reminds me of run up shield. Both seem like ways to turn a defensive option into an offensive advantage. I know they aren't the same mechanically but it feels like a similar philosophy behind the two.
I thought this was about something different before I watched this video, because in 2019, when Zain started getting really good, you had all these Marth players that would just mindlessly dash-dance into the corner, fishing for grabs, trying to imitate him and for like 2 years straight, all you had to do, was run forward across the whole stage and knee/grab them. Was pleasantly surprised, I was retired for like 3 years and didn't know ASDI-down has developed so much, might as well add it to my gameplan.
TL;DR: More defensive options breed more aggressive play Your last point honestly extends to most every surface level defensive mechanic. Melee has tons of defensive options, DI, SDI, Shield and Powershield, CC, Dashdance and Wavedash (not purely defensive I know) and yet it's probably the fastest and most aggressive plattform fighter out there. Take the other extreme, Brawlhalla, where your only defensive options are dodging/dashing and a one-off projectile from throwing your weapon and you find a very slow and campy game, because getting hit means losing all agency. To counteract that, the devs shortened combos, but that just made the game even campier, fishing for strays rather than going for punishes
For people commenting about the interpolation yes, it does look off. Was just a misclick and premiere isn't exactly the best at previewing effects like that. We go next.
