We've talked about exhaust leaks before, especially in the pipes, and muffler. Now it's time for the trickiest and sneakiest exhaust leak: the manifold leak! Especially with transverse engines, the manifold can be tucked away in hard to reach places, which makes diagnosing a tough job. Check out this video to learn some tips and tricks, and see what a manifold leak looks like up close and disassembled. That way, you will have an easier time finding a leak in your vehicle!

Do I need schooling to be a mechanic, I got 3.8 GPA I'm trying to get a scholarship to get into a good mechanic college, any advice?
This will only work if you are working on a verical. Unfortunately many of us only have a vehicle. One day I too will drive a verical.
veerlecle
Vericle 😂
dont normally subscribe to pages like auto cars but you guys deserve it! The video was clear, concise, and repetitive with important tips and information! Great vid guys!
I have a 2018 Nissan Altima, and it started with a loud consistent ticking sound, and was noticing it suspiciously went away after it warmed up. Also, it was unbelievably "exhausty" in the cabin and under the hood. This absolutely solidified my suspicions. Thank you!!
Confirms what my mechanic told me. My truck is in the shop right now getting a new manifold on the right side. That's where I started hearing the ticking sound. In fact I hear this sound in a lot of vehicles. Yeah, my next door neighbor who hasn't gotten hers checked out yet. Thanks for a great commentary on this. I subscribed to your channel and gave you a thumbs up.
Very instructive and well explained, showing that you got an experience gained from long practice. 👍👏👏
+Tico Zico Thanks for the feedback!
@@1AAuto my 98 ram squeals when I accelerate, it's pretty quiet but gets annoying after a bit and tends to get quiet the longer I drive
@@holtman2598 :
That's more likely to be a loose "V", or "serpentine" belt than a leaking manifold.
Rub a bit of bar soap, or perhaps a bit of Dawn onto each belt, if it stops squealing you've found the "offender".
The next step is to re-tension the belt.
If the belt won't re-tension, or resumes the squealing it may be time to replace the belt.
If you end up replacing the belt, make certain to get the proper amount of tension applied to it.
Remember, the application of soap to the belt/s is ONLY a "diagnostic tool", NOT a repair!
Great video, especially love how the guys often pronounced vehicle, "vericle" :D
I've been trying for about 6 months to figure out what is going on with my truck. You explained it perfectly and diagnosed my exact problem. When I find the leak I will buy my replacement parts from 1aauto. TY
This is very helpful in explaining the ticking noise I hear when my engine is cold. Mine goes away usually within 30 seconds or less, so probably a smaller leak than average but still a problem to look at.
Or... your lifters.
@@wheresfuninthat you beat me to it🤣
@@coreymohn05 mine is the other way around it ticks on startup and when I rev it
Just from watching I was able to easily identify my problem! Thanks a bunch y'all, greatly appreciate the video!
So that’s what that noise is on my passenger side, it’s starting to continue to tick even with the car warmed up unless I drive for a while which I usually don’t. Now I have a good idea of what I’ll be getting repaired. Thanks for that! Great video man, you know your stuff!
Thank you so much I will check out my Jetta for the possible air leaks you mentioned :)
Awesome video, I was about to just tighten up my bolts there but after seeing how bad the surfaces can get and that cracks can show up, I'll take out the manifold and give it a better inspection. Also hadn't even thought to use my hand to feel for gasses when the car is just turned on
Awesome video, thank you! great visuals, compact narration. After watching this My next truck is gonna be electric for sure!
Great video! Extremely helpful, thanks.
This is the exact issue on my 2004 V8 4 Runner. Excellent video appreciate the step-by-step diagnosis
Explanation, very thorough and clear. Thanks so much.
Dude, never thought auto stuff can be fun learning and easy fixing!
great video with clear explanation. Thank you very much
thanks for the video, the tips around the inspection of the manifold and parts helped me in diagnosing my issue 👍

You are fantastic with knowledgeable information thanks A1 Auto
Sorry 1A
What if you have ticking that doesn’t stop as it gets hot but it does slightly reduce? Also when car is up off the ground and your under it you can feel a whoosh of exhaust when have a buddy slightly torque the engine putting it in drive and break torquing it and facing where the pipe comes down to the cat. Can also smell exhaust in the engine bay back where the manifold is hidden behind the engine but no whooshing of exhaust blowing upwards like is under. The issue is we don’t think it’s manifold, sounds like leaking manifold but the whooshing underneath makes us think it’s elsewhere, that large of a leak in the manifold would likely poisoned me on a road trip by now makes us think that the leak is further down stream but just above the cat. But we can’t locate it and it’s a huge job to replace it because looks like have to drop the subframe and no one wants to do that.

I’m glad you said something lol because I was about to say really no one else is hearing this shit lmao 😂

Soap and water. Use a shop vac on the blow side in your exhaust to find a leak on joints and seams instead of going by noise. Itll also keep it all cold so you can touch and work on the exhaust
This was helpful. I now know that the manifold is not my problem.
Awesome video.
Merci pour vos conseils .

My 2007 Chevy 4.8 makes a ticking/tapping sound only after the engine is at operating temperature. The noise sounds exactly like lifter tapping but goes away after a few minutes. Back in the day of muscle cars that was indicative of an exhaust manifold leak. My guess is that when the thermostat opens up and the water starts to flow through the aluminum heads, they react to the quick temp change. But the manifolds being cast iron are not getting any cool down effect. So maybe this is why the tapping sound only happens at that time (operating temp) and not at start up or constant while the engine is running the whole time.
Just guessing. Gong to try the shop-vac thing and see. But not sure it will help seeing it only taps after it's warm and for a few minutes, then it goes away and purrs like a kitten for the rest of the time.

I got my response after many months trying to understand why I have an exhaust buzzing noise between 1500 RPm and 2000 RPM when engine is warming up.
Noise almost disappears when the exhaust system reaches a very hot temperature (Heavy traffic driving for 20 minutes). Then the noise comes back slowly when cruising at high continuous speeds (When exhaust system cools down due to the cooling system and high airflow underneath the car)
Thank You
I like how he explains it in sign language as he goes along. Unless he's a mime irl. or symphony conductor. Or veeracle mechanic
great great video. ty!
GRACIAS SEÑOR!
thank you
@1auto Lenny
Would it cause smokey from manifold gasket too?
or would that be the valve cover gasket only?
I changed my water pump in my 3.9v6 Dakota at start up to burp system passenger side, started to smoke really bad.
Was told its valve cover gasket but Im pretty set its mainifold gasket.
Trying to diagnose my truck's mysterious tick-tock sound - turns out it's just the engine playing hide and seek with me behind the manifold! Thanks, 1A Auto! 😂
Thanks lots
Good video
thank you so much sir!!!!
@1A Auto: Repair Tips & Secrets Only Mechanics Know
I have a 1.8 zz Corolla. I've had this ticking since over a year now. it comes with more load (more passengers or AC/headlights on)
I'm suspecting a warped exhaust manifold with leakages around the gasket. Do you think this leakage can screw with the performance of the car? because when the noise disappears sometimes, the cars performance is ALOT better?!!
Should i open the engine to change the manifold exhaust to replace with new one
For open the engine mean load it down in the ground
Thanks lucky charms this video was magically delicious!
Hello I have an 04 cadillac cts and the idle rises and falls consistently up over around 1200 rpm and down to like 400 rpm and I was wondering if there is a possibility that it was caused by loose intake bolts or maybe an intake gasket problem?thanks for your time

The best way to check for an exhaust leak, is to use a shop vac. Insert the shop vac end into the open end of the exhaust pipe and if you have dual pipes with a crossover pipe you'll need to block the other pipe by inserting an old t-shirt or shop rag. You'll want the shop vac blowing air into the exhaust pipe. Now, you don't have to worry about the exhaust leak sealing off due to heat, just grab yourself a spray bottle of water and dish soap. Go along spraying the soapy water and as soon as you see bubbles you'll have found your leak.. but don't stop there, there could be more.
Can you use a carbon monoxide tester to find a leak at the joints
Hi there, would the typical 'ticking' sound you mentioned of a leak very close to the engine be the short ticking noise I can hear right at the very beginning of the video when the engine starts? I have exactly that sound, I hear it mainly while driving whenever the motor has to pull, when I accellerate. This sound is getting louder and started over a year ago, however doesn't go away when the motor is heated up. Thanks in advance for your help!
Same
Could be your valves or valve lifters that need to be adjusted or could be rod knock which is not good
Look up what a rod knock sounds like.
I'm having the same issue and it's ever since I put a new set of aftermarket headers on. It seems to get worse when it's warm and will only make the sound under load. I can't for the life of me figure out what it is, it's definitely not the valve lifters as the sound isn't coming from them.
@@BreeingIan maybe it’s the EGR valve? Did you resolve it?
Simple way to check leaks is to use soapy water and test to see where bubbles comes. Apply soapy water on possible leaks area first. If you have leak in exhaust prior to catalyst, you will see 420 and 430 code and engine light on. I don’t why some will open all parts first and use eye ball to inspect the leak.
I don’t get a ticking noise. It sounds more like chirping or squeaking, or even metal to metal when I accelerate. It is less audible when the engine warms up. Does this still sound like an exhaust manifold issue? Gasket? Loose bolt(s)?

Hi I tore my manifolds off. I have multiple broken manifold bolts as well as shot gaskets. My truck makes a ticking noise that is louder when cold but doesn't go away when truck is warm either. Could this be my problem? 2014 dodge ram 1500
or you could use a shop vacuum with it blowing not sucking and with everything cold put the shop vac in the exhaust tip and tape to so it doesnt fall out and then turn it on and take soapy water and spray down the exhaust that is the easiest way to check for an exhaust leak been doing this for years as a auto tech BUTTTT make sure the motor and exhaust are not hot and it hasn't been ran for a couple hours
It's people like you that makes me enjoy the internet. Thanks for the great idea man
Can an a manifold leak cause a burning smell when accelerating down the road or on the hwy?
Jeez I just had some shorty headers installed on my 2013 F150 I also hear a slight ticking noise in the morning; must be a very small leak cause it goes away in the day
Does it leak fluid? Im no sure what to expect
I don't know if my timing is out or my exhaust manifold is leaking. Hoping it's the latter.
I have a Nissan 2018 Frontier King Cab 4cyc with an exhaust leak at the exhaust intake manifold not at the head but a little waist down where it's covered by heat Shield bolted in another one a little further down which is clamped together where to exhaust pipes meet and is covered by heat shield it has a aluminum o-ring as a gasket how do I get them off to replace the aluminum o-ring on it
Where are you guys located I would love to take my van to you guys
I have a leak coming from where the donut gasket is. Could this be a leaking coming from somewhere else and just happen to find it’s way where this part is!
When I turn my car off and it’s parked I hear a very rapid ticking noise like someone it tapping a small wrench really fast near the back or mid section of my exhaust and this noise actually goes away once the system is cooled off. But I hear no ticking when the car is on…I have taken it to 4 mechanics and they have told me there isn’t a problem. I’m not convinced.
is leaking from manifold gonna cause any problem or just a noice? ?
Will this exhaust leak also cause a P0032 and P0052 check engine light code? I already replaced all my O2 sensors and smell a strong exhaust and have that ticking noise.

Hello everyone, question: do you need to replace that if you have the leak. If the sound doesn't bother you or there will be some other complication if not replaced. And if you do need to replace that for some reason, what is the longes you can drive without replacing it if the sound just appeared?
Replace all gaskets , and manifold to be safe, also bolts
Could a leak come into the car ? I have noticed feeling dizzy/ light headed when driving at times
+Daniel T Thanks for watching! Yes a leaking exhaust could cause fumes to enter the cabin.
Hey man get that fixed immediately , thats really dangerous
Me too bro!
I was in my car during the winter and I was heating it up with the heater on and I fell asleep for like ten hours!
It took me a few days to shake it off! Thanks be to God Almighty that I am still up and alive 🙏🏽
My aunt once had a car that would blow anti-freeze in through the a/c vents. I was a kid and didn't understand the reasoning behind it. But I can remember looking at the vent and wondering why the air coming out of it was... visible to some degree
I installed a new catalytic converter on my kia soul 1.6l and after starting the engine i notice a burning smell . Could it be cause its new?
