    Great advice!
    In keeping with #5: I like reading books while working out on the cardio machines at the gym I go to.
    One day, as I was peddling and reading away on a stationary cycle, an attractive young lady walked by then abruptly approached me, and blurted out: "How's the book you're reading?"
    Startled, I managed to mumbled on about it being an historical novel about the siege of Constantinople in 1453. (The title was in fact "A Place Called Armageddon" by C.C. Humphries).
    After that encounter I made it a point to say hello to her every time I saw her. We got married a year-and-a-half later. The book that brought us together was displayed on the gift table, and we recently celebrated our third wedding anniversary.
    So I concur with your advice about carrying a book everywhere you go--you just might meet that special someone. :)

    I find using Goodreads and updaing my page counts at the end of every reading session to be a wonderful motivator. Another thing that I do is I have a minimum page count for each day. I find that 25 pages works well for me especially when I read non fiction where higher page counts a day can be a bit much.

    As a special education teacher, I think your advice is fantastic! I hope people give your advice a try! I do several of these. I take a book everywhere, audiobooks, and read-a-thons. I worked in a very large bookstore and I found people sometimes have difficulty choosing books, especially if they are not avid readers but are trying to change that. I recommend Goodreads to them. Even if they don't want to record what they read, they can see lists from people with similar tastes. I'd suggest trying to find someone with whom you can discuss books. Being able to share your ideas about what you read increases your enthusiasm. (It doesn't have to be a book club, just a friend you can talk with over a cup of tea.) Lastly, the most drastic thing you could do to really increase your reading would be to get a job in a bookstore or library, (or volunteer in a library if time allows). Most people can't do this but as someone who already was an avid reader, I read even more when I was working in a bookstore.

    Idk what I was thinking before I used audiobooks! I used to never do them because I thought I wouldn't like it but now i listen on my way to school/work and when I'm doing chores and it almost motivates me to do the chores because it means I get to listen to my audiobook? Lol!

      I've tried driving while listening, and walking while listening to books, and I just can't remember as much, even if I actively try to focus aggressively. And I find that when I'm done an audio book I tend to forget the details quicker, and more extensively. Sigh. I want to like them, but perhaps they just aren't for me.

  • @steakuccino

    My best advice for fitting in more reading is to read during solo meals. I used to scroll through twitter or something on my phone during my lunch break, now I read. It actually only takes most people like 15 minutes to eat their meal so if you have a 30 or 60 minute lunch, that's loads of extra reading time! If you can read while eating, even better! Sometimes I pick up something to eat or a coffee while I'm out. Now I read while I do that also.
    The other thing I would strongly encourage is making a reading date with a friend who also likes to read. They come over or you go to their place, put on some nice music, order in or make sandwiches or something, and just read. It's nice if you can make something that's usually a solo activity into a social one.

    I find what really keeps me motivated is to make a to do list of how much I have to read. For example, if a book has 400 pages, I'll put down the 50 pages mark, the 100 pages mark, the 150 pages etc. Then I can cross it out if I'm past that point. It's sort of like having mini goals! Another thing is that when I want or need to finish a book soon, I won't put it down unless I read 50 pages. Your tips sound really helpful! I think I will try to bring a book with me everywhere I go from now on :)

  • @sarahannereads
    @sarahannereads Před 8 lety

    Bring a book everywhere is one tip I give to other people and read multiple books at a time is the other big one. I find that reading multiple books helps a lot because sometimes it's not that you don't want to read, but that you're not in the mood to read a certain kind of book, so I try to be reading from multiple genres so I'm always in the middle of something to fit almost every mood.
    Great tips! :)

    I'm a big fan of lists, to be honest. So, making an actual TBR list and giving myself a deadline helps a lot! It keeps me focused. I keep the list on my planner and I burn through the list each month. Also, I try to keep the list fun. For every book about writing that I read, I add a title that I'm dying to read, like a Patricia Briggs novel, or even some much needed literary junk food, like a abook from the Dark Hunter series. I've started doing it this year. So far, it has helped me a lot.

    Choose a genre you're most interested in. I personally love reading multiple genre but I have that 1 genre I gravitate every now and then. This help because reading won't feel like a task (as it shouldn't), you'll have a pile of books done before you know it.

  • @mathmaverick3044

    I just stumbled upon your video. Like most things it's often a matter of prioritizing. For years I have been getting up at 4AM (often earlier on the weekends - hard to believe, I know) just to read. I typically get a good hour or two of reading in before work (or any facsimile thereof). I read between 75 - 100 books a year. I am currently on a quest to read an author from every country in the world (an estimated 4-year quest). I also re-read an author each year (2 years ago it was Hermann Hesse, last year was Jules Verne and this year Alexandre Dumas). My advice is that if you like to read, then READ (minimize other distractions)! Thanks for sharing your video - it was great!!

  • @TheBookishGinger
    @TheBookishGinger Před 8 lety

    All of these tips are great! Every time I feel a slump coming on, I find a readathon, because it gets me going again. I read about 100 books a year and have 3 small children and people never know how I can do it. Well, just less tv and I carry around a book all the time, just in case. Then the audiobook thing as well. I live in Canada, so we get a lot of snow and I just pop some headphones in and shovel the driveway while listening to a book. One thing I like to do, if I'm noticing that electronics are distracting me, I grab a book and run a bath. Once I'm in the tub, I only have my book to distract me, so I get some good reading done then.

    Reading at your own pace is also a good thing! And don't compare yourself to someone who is reading 2 + books at a time. Time wise as to reading a book, just read when you feel like it and also when you're on your smart phone / tablet, just think about the time spent when you could be reading! And also for me, I have set an alarm for myself of when I could read if I don't really feel like reading during the day or whatever.

    Some great tips, but I think in general it's just good to do the reading you wish to do, rather than seeing a certain amount of reading as a goal. If a book is good you'd prefer reading over gaming or watching television or something, so you don't have to be thinking about "I want to read more", rather "I want to finish/read that book" and the effect is automatic

    The way read a lot is to set a goal every day. On a typical day I strive to read at least 100 pages. On a d at where I might have a little but of free time I might try to read 200. On a day when I know I'll be really busy, I might just try to read a chapter. This really helps me, you just have to find out how much you want to read and how much you can actually read.

    The only issue I have with taking a book with me in my bag is it usually ends up getting battered somehow :P I've been in a reading slump recently and I've only started reading again these past couple of days and it's so nice to have started reading again, I've really missed it, I just could bring myself to do it before... My advice (not only to beginners at reading regularly) is to read smaller books. When you feel like you don't have a lot of time to read, it can be a disastrous decision to read that 1200-page book you have sitting on your shelf. Read a 300-page novel instead - you'll get through that relatively quickly and will feel like you accomplished something. ;)
    I always adhere to that advice whenever I feel like I don't have time for reading. Works great for me. :D

    I've heard the "take a book with you everywhere" tip a lot, and I can definitely see how the times when I'm sitting somewhere waiting for something to happen might be a good time to fit in some reading...if I were a different kind of reader. My issue is that I have a really hard time focusing on a book in those types of situations. A) I'm sensitive to noise and when there are things going on around me, I have a hard time focusing. B)If I'm waiting for something, simply knowing that something is about to happen to me will be in the back of my mind and I'll have a hard time focusing. C)if I'm not able to put a book down at the end of a chapter, it's going to bother me. A lot. I have no idea how to get past those issues.

      I thought the same then I tried them and I love it! Motivates me to workout, go for a walk, clean all sorts of things because my treat is to dig deeper into the story! It also allows me to get stuff done and not have my hands and eyes tide up. I am listening to the Harry Potter series at work and it just makes my day!

      Nedeli The point is not to read just for reading's sake; it's to acquire knowledge or to enjoy a good story. It doesn't matter whether you gain this knowledge from reading or listening. After you finish reading or listening to a nonfiction book, for example, the question you have to ask yourself is, "Do I now know something about the subject that I didn't know before I read/listened to this book/audiobook?"

    I sometimes feel like reading books, but quickly get bored after 30 mins or so and start doing something more fun like watching movies, playing games. Any tips for that ?

    The thing that helps me read more is that an hour before bed I get off my laptop and read. It helps me to sleep better and well it's a lot better than just browsing random social networks. :)

    Most of reading apps are on english or some language I don't know. So if I want to read good I can't use those apps. So, maybe there is possiblity to read on phone. I found an idea: taking pictures of pages of my book and read it throuout the day. I personally think that is good idea because probably you can read min. 10 pages when your book isn't with you.

    I'm just imagining myself trying to read while I walk... Yeah I can't imagine that. I do carry a book with me everywhere though. Instead of playing on my phone during my down time I read.
