Star-Lord went from Space Jesus Cop, disappears for decades to become super stoic Master Chief (EMH even got Steve Downes to voice him), then when Gunn made the movie, he gave the entire cosmic side a overhaul. For better, he's now a distinct character... on the other side, early in the movie adaptions era tried WAY to hard, at least now adaptions figured out a compromise of doing the MCU, while doing new stuff within the main comic universe.

Pretty underestimated take here. Gunn & Feige made huge changes to the characters and it was the first time lead characters had been radically changed from the comic versions in the MCU. All the previous Avengers were fairly close to either their 616 or ultimate versions at one stage or another, and they did a damn nice job.

The GotG cartoon sort of did this too as the second movie hadn't come out yet so they made him half-Spartax (not Sparta) and the son of Emperor J'son (not Jason) and the element gun is bio-locked to Spartoi (the empire of Spartax) royalty and belonged to J'son.

Spider-Man's design is how he was since the conception of the character, Star-Lord has gone through multiple costumes through his conception and really its just a red jacket. Whats distinctive is his mask, that is actually recognizable than a red jacket literally anyone can wear. And even then character's have worn different outfits anyway, one of Spider-Man's most iconic and beloved costumes is the black suit which looks very different from his normal costume.

You’re missing context for why Al Ewing reintroduced the whole Master of the Sun thing, so I’ll fill you in; it was basically a big attempt to make Star-Lord less like Chris Pratt, as his character had been completely changed due to MCU synergy. Reintroducing the more mystical elements of Quill’s origin allowed Ewing to rework Peter’s character and even make him bisexual and polyamorous. His adventures in that other dimension are also an attempt to do the original storyline that Englehart wanted to do; you’ll notice that in that issue, Quill’s adventures correspond to the houses of Astrology. Much like he did with Immortal Hulk, Ewing called on old continuity with a new spin to let him “reboot” Peter and make him more like his old character while retaining some of his MCU-ness. It was a brilliant move on his part and made the character more interesting then he’s been in a long time

I usually like when comic can bring back things from older stories. That Master of the Sun stuff just doesn't work for me. It hadn't been referenced since the 70's, those stories are considered an alternate reality. There's never any references to it in 616, let alone a reference to Peter having memories about it, or even learning that the memories were implanted. It's unnecessarily complicated. It really conflicted with the type of character Quill had become, a guy that relies on tech, his wits and his team.
