  • Deidra was illiterate until she was 28 years old, but that didn't stop her from graduating high school and college with the help of her amazing support system. Deidra explains how she slipped through the cracks at school while moving around multiple times as a part of a large military family. It wasn't until after graduating college that she revealed her secret, and began learning to read with a friend and tutor. Now Deidra is using her story and her nonprofit Reading to New Heights to inspire other adults to improve their literacy skills.

When she said "I'm working this hard to hide it what if I work this hard to fix it"
Uuuh WOW that really hit and a thought that applies in so many situations. What a great story of dedication and perseverance. Awesome to see TKCS partnering with more and more businesses too.

This is wonderful! I didn’t know in this day and age people still couldn’t read. That’s my ignorance. Brings back memories from when my daughter was about 6 and she started to put her sight words in a big ziplock and tape it to the shower wall. She would sing her heart out to them! 🤣 She’s now a college senior, so I’m surprised I remember that! 🤗

She’s a beautiful and well spoken woman, I would never suspect she ever had literacy troubles.
