As a 4wder would I buy an Ineos Grenadier?

- I got to see the Ineos Grenadier for the first time at the Brisbane 4x4 show this weekend so here are some of my first thoughts and impressions. Until I get to really have a proper drive this is what I think. And as you know if I owned one I’d be looking at wheeling it quite hard to really see what it’s made of.

Love the "no nonsense" approach to your review, for this vehicle. Thanks for the contend MM. Cheers
My pleasure mate
It's good seeing Aussie's reviewing 4x4's because you guys really do off-roading well over there. No mucking about
Thanks Andrew.
🤣!
Great review. I am super excited about this vehicle getting to Oz.
It is just what we need and Ineos should be congratulated for building something we want.....unlike other manufacturers.
Thank you MM for the quick tour. Always informative !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Matt,
At this point I have not looked at a Grenadier in the metal, but from the walkaround videos I have watched it does appear Ineos have put a lot of thought into making it offroad ready and relatively easy to modify out of the box.....I believe the vehicle comes pre wired for the winch and spotties, and possibly other accessories as well, and I understand Ineos is working with the aftermarket to help with developing accessories....
Underneath it mostly looks good, radius arms under the axle is no different to a cruiser or patrol so don't see an issue there, though have to agree on the steering damper and side steps....
Not sold on a completely digital instrument cluster/infotainment screen, analogue gauges for the essentials would be nice given its purpose, and I'm keen to see what their approach is for a service network in remote areas....
Not in a position to even consider one at the moment, but will certainly keep an eye on how it goes in the market, as on paper at least, it appears they have done a pretty good job of fulfilling the design brief....
Thanks for sharing your initial thoughts, Matt. You brought up several points that I hadn’t heard mentioned before, such as the effect of the tow hitch on departure angle.
I have one on order, and I opted for the rock sliders, which appear to be very solid. I’ve been lucky enough to have 2 drives so far, and I hope you get to drive one soon. 🙂
Thanks for sharing! And yes I honestly would like to take one bush for a few days
Thanks for giving your opinion on the raised step. When 4xoverland initially brought it up I was quite concerned, but I think I'd draw the same conclusion as you on this one.
I was lucky enough to test drive one before christmas and did not even notice the step
Great video Matt, you really picked up on a few things that others have missed. Love it. The Ineos forum
Thanks. I really do want to drive it Offroad to decide if it really is the machine I think it might be.
So glad they didn't go down the 'independent suspension' route
Being honest, the only problem I have with it is that it's not what I imagined.
When they gave the initial pitch for a no-compromise, ground-up build for an off-road vehicle, what I pictured was the sort of thing that IBEX Automotive make (not sure if you're familiar with them), so when I first saw the re-worked Defender that they created, I was disappointed. However, for what it is, they have done a pretty good job, it's definitely not the no-compromise design they said it would be, but it is a really good vehicle.
Foot rest is a storm in a tea cup indeed mate. Sat in one yesterday myself and it's seriously a non issue.
Yeah. I think it’s people looking to find fault
@@MadMatt4WD don’t get me started on the wipers…. :D

I agree I think it is a good unit.
Thanks Matt, for a great first look. Will be interesting to hear your comments if you get to drive one. Check out whether there's enough elbow room for the driver!
I think it’ll be fine
After sitting in one you definitely will have elbow room, and a decent platform to rest it on with the sill.
I had a look under the bonnet of that one on Friday Matt and you weren't missing much. Lots of plastic just like everything else on the market.
Great clip Matt. Definitely the best overview of the Ineos that I have seen to date.
Look forward to the drive.
Are they going to let you wheel it properly? Bundera style!!
Ha ha! I doubt it...
Much as I like the concept and the intent I gotta say I wouldn't buy one myself.
I don't know if many of those accessories are standard or optional but it looks like they've been integrated into the design.
That is the opposite way that I think a good overland 4wd should be.
A good platform in my opinion should be like a blank canvas. Something that has all the fundamentals in place, but that can be adapted and modified to suit any intended purpose.
Yeah I doubt anyone would let me wheel it that hard ay. 😂😂 I also couldn’t afford one but I was impressed.
You also missed the dual batteries under the rear seats and all the fuse and relay blocks that would usually be under the bonnet are there too waiting to be tapped into way easier than any other truck.
I did see that and yes I should have mentioned it. Very cool design.
Thanks for the overview Matty! Hey, can you also butter-up someone for the full review of the new Quartermaster. Just thinking of making that as a full time tourer for me and the boss. Cheers mate 🎉
I’m trying to butter up someone to give a drive of one. My style of drive though.
Looks nice. Wonder how the hand break goes. Keep up the great work Matt. 👏👏👏
Well being I have Toyota blood the hand brake won’t work for me. 😂😂😂
Looks good on paper, long term reliability and service and spare parts work in Australia will interesting to see.
Time will tell as well as parts support
BMW B57 and ZF have been a round for a decade + and are a match made in heaven.
Prices were just revealed for America. About $73k for the base version. I was hoping it was cheaper but you get a lot of bang for your buck. I like how the truck was designed to be rugged, durable and old school. The Grenadier even uses an old school ignition key for dependability reasons.
Nice piece, thanks.
07:40 that's not a hitch. It's a receiver mount. The hitch is on the towed item.
My first look at it at start of video to end .. I would have one needs mods but would be good off road
Well you gave a positive review Matt so I reckon they should give you a drive.
Thanks mate.
Really enjoyed that one!
Glad you enjoyed it
Personally I'd prefer to have the locker controls on the front dash where I can easily see them, & use them/verify their status without have to look away from the track as much.
I certainly like my switches such that I can use them by feel
Looks like a rippa 4wd compared to what we can get these days, Similarly priced 70 series or an Ineos I would choose the Ineos all day
No!
Toiota - 👍
Just a quick thing about the placement of the winch rope, I got told by an officer in qld that it legally can’t just be sitting and it has to be attached to some point on the vehicle.
I’ve never heard that before. Interesting but silly imo
@@MadMatt4WD yer he said something about the hook coming loose and being dangerous. He was nice so I just fixed it he could have been talking nonsense but I wasn't dying on that hill
Nice review.
Hi Matt, when are you going to drive one? can't wait for your feedback. I drove one and I was impressed.
I don’t know. I’ve got to find one
THANK YOU Matt.
REALLY APPRECIATE your thoughts and efforts and comments.
- I do hope you get to test drive the vehicle.

Fingers crossed!
A lot to like but having sat in the same vehicle at the show on Friday, I would find those overhead switches impossible because there are so many of them and as a tall driver, they are unreadable from high up. Centre console is way too busy too.
Interesting. I couldn’t read them either and did wonder what it would be like using them on a bumpy road.
You would learn where/what each one does, without looking.
like that its basic base model 2 rows can build it out take it off road , in the U.S. most wagons or s.u.v s are luxury car manufactures ... "WE WANT Indpt. rear axle FOR A SMOOTH RIDE AND LEG ROOM FOR THE 3RD ROW " every one wants 2ND ROW ENT SCREENS AND 2 SUNROOFS' every one wants all the luxury car bits "
Bit of a worry they can’t get the windscreen on a demo model fixed, doesn’t bode well for owners.
Could you imagine other manufacturers showing a demo model with a cracked screen
Would love to how much fuel it can take with aftermarket tank, probably my main concern when touring Australia.
Yes.
90lts
Absolutely no space underneath for an additional fuel tank. The designers did not have OZ in mind when thinking about a meager 90 litre fuel capacity. Any extra fuel will have to go inside the vehicle. See a problem with that? 150 litres inside will eat up half your load space.
@trickster8635 I carry 80lt of diesel on the roof of my LC, the Gren is capable of that as well.
@@trickster8635 how much extra fuel do u really need? 90 litres is heaps that is possibly 1000kms of distance, depending on economy maybe even more. My fully loaded dmax gets 750+ from 78 litres.
My concern from experience is those CV style tail shafts can be a let down after while. Unless you can buy them as a consumable part for cheap.
I’d think that would be correct although I’ve got no experience with that style of tailshaft.
Many of us seeing the G400d,G350d, more off-road focus g wagon expensive. Thank ineos, the grenadier is like off-road equivalent standing lower prices. Will buy one attack some point
If it’s built in the same factory as the G wagon ( some say, I don’t know) let’s put some portals under there and see what happens 🤠
Thanks Matt - a great first impressions review.
While you are hitting up someone to get a test drive, see if you can figure out parts and availability in, I don't know say Katherine or Oodnadata. How are they going to do that without one having to wait by the side of the road for a week while they are shipped to your nearest PO?
Yeah that’s certainly a question for Australia.
After speaking to Justin the head of Ineos Asia Pacific, he assured me that Melbourne will be the parts centre for the region.
@@mikefoster7085 That's a good start.
That's no different for Toyota or Nissan or whatever. The parts inventory, these days is massive, they can't hold everything for everyone. You will wait days regardless of vehicle make.
@@trickster8635 That's true, but with a Toyota or a Nissan, chances are you will find a second hand part or a part stored in the back of a garage in woop woop...This will be true of the Ineos in the future, iff it takes off here, but until then you must rely on the Melbourne Warehouse - assuming they actually set that up and fill it with inventory.

I've seen these things all over the internet but have never actually checked the price. For what you're getting (a mondernised old school Defender) the price is very competitive. Base model 70's are pushing $90k in NZ, if you could get one, they've put a pause on new orders so you can't even order one let alone walk into a dealer and buy one. These things start at $95k here. I bet a few people are thinking "why wait 2+ years?"
Here in Oz they’re a lot more than that.
@@MadMatt4WD You had me second guessing myself so I just double checked the price, I don't think I can link outside of youtube but NZ Autocar Mag has an article written in Feb of this year saying the base model will be NZ$95k which is around AU$87k... only costs a couple of grand to get a car across the ditch.
Getting close to a landcruiser price point when you add in extras. A lot of hype on this vehicle, I’m not sure if these people have also used a mildly modified ute off-road, that are so much better than credited.
I would only consider such a purchase if the good aftermarket accessory manufacturers get on board.
i have no need for one, and i wont talk about the money side of it.
But good grief a guy can dream! what a vehicle
It has a "toot" button on the steering wheel? :)
Toot toot. It was kinda cute I thought.
the steering damper is moved behind the steering link on later models.
Apparently this is a rhd problem due to the geometry change.
@@MadMatt4WD it's due to the diff being on the left so the damper cannot be behind the steering link.
Apparently the diesel version has AdBlue. Still a functional looking 4x4 though.
Yes it does
First look I have had underneath. They said they tried to not use many computers in it, but I would rather have real gauges than that fancy dash screen in the center.Overall, not bad compared to what else is on the market. I expect I will be shocked when I see the price.
Great review, certainly tweaks my interest, me personally would love the dual cab variant, on another forum the rough estimate to have it kitted properly is around the $160 mark, that’s a lot of $$$, my price budget would be a jb74 🤦🏽,
We must have the same budget. 😂
it only has 2 pedals .. where's the clutch/manual version ?
How good is that ay. 😁😁

Looks great overall, but I do wish they squared off the wheel wells at the back more. You could gain a lot of useable space with a drawer system that sits flush to the wheel wells and utilize the full width of the cargo area.
How would you do that though? You’d loose so much in other areas of the vehicle like wheel stuff and ride height would have to go up.
@@MadMatt4WD instead of sloped inwards just square it off flat at the top. I’d personally have straight sides and top with less volume than curved sides with more volume. It’s easier to pack and organize in my opinion.
I saw this car at the Adelaide show last year and absolutely love it. They have definitely build something which was purpose made for offroad tourers. I also like the fact they offered the choice of two of the best BMW engines and if I were to get one I would definitely opt for the petrol B58 so I don't have to worry about DPF issues of modern diesel engines, and it is also paired with the best transmission combo which is the ZF box. I tried to spec one on their website and I just think they are about $20k too pricey out of the box for what it is. Like you said, one would still need to put on aftermarket mods which is an added cost.
Great comment. I’ll be following with interest and will see if I can get a media unit to test out.
@@MadMatt4WD Yeah absolutely can't wait for you to properly test it out on 4wd track because I'm like you, the steering setup at the front looks pretty vulnerable without any protection plate.
Is that windshield cracked ????????????????
Yeah. Got a stone chip from a road train.
bummer
Lickalisious!
In the rear compartment, why didn't' Ineos design the right wheel well to have a level top so that you can at least use it for storage. The way it's sloping down, unless you make a level floor or shelf on top of it, it's just wasted space.
This was brought up in a British review, and apparently the production vehicles are to be level. Don't forget, we are all looking at prototypes at the moment.
Fatman, I have a feeling that the slope is to allow for the fuel line to the tank on the right side
actually the tire size is 31.6 inches talk Im thinking a minium 33 or 34 inches and with a lift of 1.5 maybe 35 inch
I think it should be on 33” as a minimum
I call it the Dash 8.
How long before it's nicknamed the Grenade.
Lol
Truly, how do you figure that. It's running tried / tested and proven BMW blocks, ZF transmission and supa strong driveline/diffs. Concerns here are no more than a new Toyota series, they have been developing this thing in the background for years, just as Toyota do. Mind you, Toyota's aren't as unbreakable as they once were either, ha! I purchased a 76 series and despised it, went back to my Jackaroo that was far more comfortable, more stable on & off road and every bit as capable off road.
Mind you, the 76 had dual diff locks, would hate to have got one with open diffs, yuk, companion had one, totally useless once it lifted a wheel. The Jackaroo, initially it just had supa effective LSD, eventually I fitted an auto lokka, that made it was basically unstoppable.
This thing won't be any worse than any other new release, I think we'll be shocked how good it is.
Mind you, I did think that about the 76. Would test one of these far more extensively than I did the Toyota before handing out the cash, don't want to get caught twice.
Im 6'5 ya reckon id fit in it matt?
I think so yeah. I wasn’t cramped.

On the subject of AdBlue. Why did INEOS decided to stick with AdBlue on the Aussie version. ?The LC 300 comes with AdBlue for some countries but not Australia, would have been better focusing on a larger fuel tank and omitting the 20 lt ad blue tank.
@@buzz7927 I’ve got no idea but I imagine there’s a good reason.
@@buzz7927 Because it is built for the world market, not Australia. And 90 litres of fuel is not going far. Before you profer long range tanks - there ain't no room underneath!
Look I want to buy this so much. The price is high for a ‘utilitarian’ vehicle. I can’t stand they haven’t put a head up display or at lease a small screen that shoes speed and some other critical things in front of the driver. I would have liked the seats to lay flat as well. Those wheel archers in the boot protruding heaps.
Now I just want to add, people are talking about storm in tea cups because this is being built from scratch and they want feedback. But there are small things they can do to make it better. Also if you want to make it in Australia, there has to be a long range tank option!!!!!!!
These Grenadiers have been Road and off road tested for hundreds of thousands of miles by expert testers since it all began. The only gripe I see is why they went for automatic gearbox instead of manual. A driver has much more control in manual over rough and wet ground but as it has front and rear differential and high and low range I guess it works ok. Down with the unreliable Land Rover and good riddance.
I disagree re auto vs manual. I own both and have wheeled both a lot and the auto is way more controllable in every situation.
@@MadMatt4WD I’ve just pulled an automatic 4WD Ford Ranger out of the mud with a manual Skoda Yeti, he said I couldn’t do it because someone else tried it with an automatic Ranger and couldn’t do it. Maybe it’s just my skill and experience I don’t know. Oh well we are all different. Good feedback though from you 👍🏻
@@puffingtonsmythe8690 that’s not really a situation where drive control is important. It comes into play especially when rock crawling and other slow speed work. The auto is much easier to left foot brake with as well. If you watch the videos with my Bundera you’ll see what I can do with a manual vehicle but it’s a much harder drive than auto.

Yeah I get what you’re saying and I wondered the same thing but it’s not a 110 at all and I think it’s could be better.
Need to watch the Scottish reviews, this thing really gets up and boogies in petrol format, very quick truck, and super effective off road. But turned off by add blue for diesel myself.

Surprises me how reviewers get basic info wrong.
It’s not a snorkel - it’s been said over and over by INEOS reps and people who spend time doing research before posting - it’s just a raised air intake for dust purposes it does Not keep water out.
Anyone seriously interested as I was and had paid a reservation fee and test driven will state some basic facts like only 90ltr tank and no space underbody for long range tank.
Only 689kg Payload (90%fuel capacity no driver) on Trialmaster Diesel variant with locking diffs and dual battery as standard.
Poor driver ergonomics for right hand conversion - a foot test that is intrusively wide and high due to exhaust configuration, ignition key to left of steering wheel and very awkward unless your left handed.

I’ll bet your fun at parties
Sounds like your an experienced long distance desert tourer Kevin! If the car doesn’t tick all your boxes…..build your own perfect machine. Don’t forget the raised water intake.
Which other new vehicle on the market comes with 3 factory fitted locking differentials and dual batteries already in their quoted payload?
That's a bloody impressive payload actually, Y61 Patrols were 432 I think off the top of my head, now put 7 people in that (seating capacity) and you're overweight without fuel, duh.
Y62 got a far better payload, think it's around 700.
Snorkel on a 70 series is not waterproof either, has a seam with foam rubber at base of windscreen.
Y61 dealer fitted snorkel not sealed between airbox and inner guard.
Your point?
If you want a snorkel to be sealed verify it be refitting yourself, don't accept manufacturers supply.
Any raised air intake will avoid water ingress over inguard or under bonnet intake.

Yeah nah. This needs modification for Australian 4wding/remote offroading. Clearance is an obvious one. But adequate for many other countries with gentle offroading. Do like much of its features though.
I tend to agree but that’s true for most new 4wds isn’t it? But visually it looks like it has good ground clearance compared to many new 4wds.
@@MadMatt4WD I particularly like the pre-wired switch panel
@@fifiandmax I know u didn't just say that with a straight face, when the 79 series is in the Aussie market.
@@fifiandmax yeah I think that’s very good too.
newp, not proven yet in australia as yet. same as the new 300 series landcruiser, until some one buys one, and owns it and drives it for a while ( like the 200 series ). The market will dictate wether i am wrong i suppose.
Yeah I’d never be a first adopter as I can’t afford failures. But it does seem to be built with known tech so that’s a very hopeful sign.
