I'll repost a thing I put on the Leafs SBNation page: Caps fan here. I’ve watched about half of the Leafs’ games this year, and thought I might offer an outsider’s perspective: 1. The team got worse. Toronto has always had trouble with the "physical" side of the game, and in the modern NHL you can’t fix that by bringing in a bunch of "grit" players on your fourth line - you need physical players who are also actually good at hockey, or they’ll just get caved in. Kadri was that, for the Leafs - trading him for another offensive defenseman didn’t make a whole lot of sense. Zaitsev for Ceci is probably a wash, but the loss of Gardiner hurt; I think of Gardiner much in the way I think of Dmitri Orlov - great player with occasional, massive, and inexplicable brainfarts. 2. The system makes no sense. It’s obvious the coaching staff doesn’t trust the current Leafs roster to play a wide-open, run-and-gun type of game; but that’s the type of game the Leafs skillset is obviously best-suited to. A huge portion of the Leafs’ cap is tied up in skill players who can deke and score in open ice. Those skill players are (despite the scoring woes so far this year) still some of the best players at doing that in the league. The "take lots of high point shots and hope you can put in a rebound" type of safe, low-risk, low-reward game strategy is obviously hurting the team’s ability to score goals. Unfortunately, this has a whiff of Dave Hakstol, to me - he did a similar thing with the Flyers, and it didn’t work very well in Philadelphia, either. The thing is, the Flyers at least had the benefit of (for a while) having some elite "stand in the slot and tip pucks/work for rebounds"-type players (prime Wayne Simmonds was possibly the best in the league at this!), which can make that strategy make a bit more sense - but the Leafs have not had that since the departure of JVR. 3. The team looks scared when they’re playing an even (or close) game. Psychological blocks are real (I’m a Caps fan, we watched our team struggle with one for years), and right now the Leafs look like they seize up any time they get back in a game. This Leafs roster isn’t built for careful, defensive play - the team opens up a bit (out of necessity) when they’re trailing substantially, and suddenly they look like a way better team. Once they’re back in it, they "tighten up" and suddenly they have no possession and no threats and it’s just a matter of hoping the other team doesn’t score. Not a good plan. To be optimistic: Apart from point 1, a lot of this should be fixable with a coaching change.

For me the breaking point was signing John Tavares, bringing home great player, great story, great marketing move. But it destroyed balanc of a team.Bringing another star offence in already great attack instead focussing on D was a huge mistake.
Honesty Jan I think it was the Melander contract standoff that started it. Dubas allowed it to happen. He basically gave Melander what he wanted and other plays thought "if he can do it, we can do it too". It almost became a thing in the league! Crosby and Ovechkin make 8mill a year? No way Marner/Melander have their caliber of play. Had a "real" GM like Lou still been with the leafs, he would have told Melander to fly a kite and trade for better Defense. Lou righted the ship only for Dubas to take it off course. Bad play on Shanahans part for allowing a brand new GM to run the leafs organization. What worked in the AHL certainly does not work in the NHL. At first I was on board with Dubas. He handles PR very well and he's a likeable guy. But now I see his potential and he has made some very bad mistakes. Reminds me of when John Fergusin Jr. was GM for the leafs. Those were bad times...
I'm glad that Dubas is finally taking some heat. I could write for pages about what he doesn't understand about (NHL) hockey. (For instance: he traded away Par Lindholm at the trade deadline; a versatile forward who can take draws, kill penalties, help out with the cycle game, and move up-and-down the line-up. Exactly the kind of utility forward that you trade for at the deadline, just as the Jets understood). But I think the crux of his problems relates to his stubborn insistence that "there is no such thing as a 'window.'" This is a more serious flaw than his obsession with analytics and his lack of hockey sense regarding the importance (and psychology) of role players, such as backup goaltenders and grinders. On several instances, Dubas has talked about how the idea of a "window" is a myth. And that he wants to give himself the best chance to succeed each and every year. In a salary cap era, this is absolute nonsense. Thanks to their luck at the draft, and a few sly contracts drafted up by Lou, the Leafs did have a window. A glorious chance to have a mini-dynasty. But that window was dependent on them getting one of their young stars on a bridge contract (to make sure they weren't hemmed-up against the cap), and to take advantage of Freddy's below-market contract. Because that's the truth: when Freddy's contract is up, this team's chance of winning the Cup is basically nil. But that's a moot point now. Because, given the idiotic contracts that Dubas handed-out like candy to Matthews, Marner, and Nylander, he had ONE chance to get it right. And that was this year, before Muzzin, Barrie, and Ceci went unrestricted. But, as we're all witnessing, he screwed it up; his gamble on Barrie and Ceci has gone all wrong. A lot of this failure is on Babcock, for his ridiculous deployment decisions; for sure. But again: the heart of the problem is Dubas' insistence that windows don't exist. And his arrogance that the Leafs "cap wizards" can always find a way out from under the salary cap. They can't. And they didn't. There's really no way out of this mess now, as the situation gets more and more toxic. So, in a way, I guess Dubas was right: there is no window for this team.
the personnel is all there. They just aren't playing up to their potential. When Mike Sullivan took over the Pens, the players all started playing up to/over their potential. I believe the same will happen when Babcock goes. The Leafs will go on an absolute tear when he is gone and they just might pull a St Louis/Pittsburgh. The 2016 and 2017 Pens Defense was nothing special. They weren't even as good as what the Leafs currently have. The blueprint has been drawn, the personnel is in place...now Dubas just needs to pull the trigger and let MB go.
💯 agree. Dubas bent over and took it hard with the Nylander contract and set the precidence for all new contracts. Some of us predicted this, kids are getting paid crazy contracts without deserving it.... Everytime I see Pasternak taking it to our Leafs I think "there is a hockey player for the team and not for himself...". I wish I worked for an organization that didn't pay for results but only on inflated potential Dubas or whomever has made these management level choices has broke this team.
@@natefoulon why trade the whole team? The players were good before, no? That's how majority of people work. These new young players have all proven they only wanted the payout. Now they have it they no longer need to play. If they wanted a playoff championship they would still be playing...
Last year when Willie sat out half the season the Leafs still won games. When Matthews was injured Leafs still managed to win games. When Tavares broke his finger, it wasn't pretty but Leafs still won games. Marner goes out with an injury and the Leafs drop six in a row. Is Marner actually the heart of this team? Asking for a friend.
As a Blues fan, this is what I have experienced every year prior to last year. It's tough being a fan of a team that doesn't live to expectations when they are good. 16 and 00 for the Blues come to mind. Stick with it, trust me. It makes the glory even sweeter. Chin up Steve.
Steve I actually feel bad for you having to think of what to say after each Leaf loss, it’s draining. Love your channel by the way! Just keep on keeping on
I don't know if Steve is going to read this or even some one it the leafs organization but I have a story to tell. I'm a caps fan and for years I watched the Caps fail over and over again in the playoffs and even during the regular season. My dad could tell you about even more painful memories since he has been a fan since the inception of the team. Now a little side story that helped me see the big picture in recent years was that I started coaching high school hockey. In watching my high school team, which for reference is a co-op team where most of the kids come from different schools and thus don't really spend that much time outside of the rink together, I realized that they all encouraged and supported each other on the ice. They had a blast mocking me in practice when I missed the net or if I fell any little thing they kept me loose as a coach and were able to bond over the stupidity of it all. This may sound odd but when it came to big game situations even though we were all intense and focused on winning, we still were able to crack a joke or two and not really worry about the outcome of the game but still give it 100%. What I noticed the year the Caps won the cup was that they gave it their all but never took the ice time for granted and lost sight of having fun playing the game. I you look at any of the goals by a 3rd or 4th liner in the playoffs Ovi was jacked up and super hyped. Even during the regular season they were having fun. Look at when Carry Price robbed Ovi and Ovi gave him a pat on the back instead of breaking his stick or yelling profanity. Even the Blues last year started to loosen up and enjoy the game. That to me was the whole point of Gloria. Gloria isn't a great song but its catchy and fun. The players take that in and absorb it. In the past years I have seen that positive fun energy slowly seep out of the Leafs locker room. They are so serious and don't seem to loosen up which explains pretty much all of the issues that the Leafs are suffering from. I know it may sound like a stupid idea but Babcock should do practice in a clown suit or take part in some of the drills or make a joke and smile. Tavares should be making people dance and have fun in and outside the locker room. I get the competitive attitude but if you don't have fun and realize you are lucky enough to play the best sport on earth and get paid millions to do it then you are in the wrong career.
As a Devils fan i feel your pain right now Steve. Obviously our expectations were lower than yours but still with all the moves I expected to have a respectable team. It really sucks to see the Leafs struggling like that and I hope both our teams can figure it out.
I'm a Sens fan at least something to forward too DJs a great coach that's why were more competitive and your sucking on the pk,but our pp is still shit pks good
50 years of Hockey I can't figure this teams problems either. There almost Great on paper. It makes no sence to me man. I think I would consider letting 1 star player go, and picking up a few elite "D" men and a 4+ million back up goaltender..Not sure yet about letting Babs go. There's not really anyone to replace him with. " GO LEAFS GO "
Looking in from the outside, maybe because fans put up with it? I'm in Ontario and not a Leafs fan and I'm always amazed at how willing to forgive and quick to forget the fanbase is. If you measure the Leafs as a team that wins, miserable, as an organization aimed at making money, envy of basically the whole league. What other team can underperform for this long and still rake in this kind of cash? They don't really have any motivation to do better.
Cale Makar is getting Barrie's points now. The secret the Avs didn't tell the Leafs was that Barrie's stats were inflated from playing first unit PP with MacKinnon.

Dubas or whomever has made these management level choices has broke this team.
so lets get a new GM and he can trade away the whole team and we can start over, the players Dubas has assembled sucks
Not true...if the Leafs fire Babcock, fire Dubas, and trade Nylander and/or Marner they can recreate a window starting next year.
If...if...IF!!!!
@@natefoulon why trade the whole team? The players were good before, no?
That's how majority of people work. These new young players have all proven they only wanted the payout. Now they have it they no longer need to play. If they wanted a playoff championship they would still be playing...
Is it weird that I’m genuinely sad for Steve? This is just so depressing to see.
Fionn nah i feel u
One of your best LFRs to date Steve... even when you had no words, knew exactly what to say. And so begins the Sheldon Keefe era.
That metapod kakuna reference made me spit my Pepsi on my television
This LFR just made me genuinely depressed
Ah yes, Jason Actual Spezza.
but but but you signed John Tavares - and named him captain. Holy cow in hindsight that July 1 for us Isles fans may be the best day ever.
He is he’s the best on this team
I was so excited for this season...
BarronBrothersFilms weren’t we all.... now I barely watch the games.. I can’t. Why would I want to watch a team that doesn’t care.
kenneth hopkins Yeah I stopped watching the last 4 games & just tune into Steve Dangles videos only. Leafs are a waste of time now sadly
@@dghvdhfhhb6405 their turning into the Leafs from 4 years ago
Mee too man.
I feel stupid too. I feel duped and I’m honestly heart broken.
As a Blues fan, this is what I have experienced every year prior to last year. It's tough being a fan of a team that doesn't live to expectations when they are good. 16 and 00 for the Blues come to mind. Stick with it, trust me. It makes the glory even sweeter. Chin up Steve.
As a Bruins fan, I really enjoy these videos these days
Steve I actually feel bad for you having to think of what to say after each Leaf loss, it’s draining. Love your channel by the way! Just keep on keeping on
This is going from funny when they lose to tragic
bravo Steve... I am just feeling defeated, thank you for capturing my frustration
Broken Steve. It's finally happened this team ruined his life.
I was not even born when they won a playoff round, lollll
You look on the verge of tears. Me too man, me too.
This channel has become the "Arsenal Fan TV" of the NHL and I'm totally here for it.
Mike Kratzmann leafs fans are nowhere near as bad as arsenal fans
tbh, my optimism died when we lost to carolina in 2002.
Oh how weird I was just watching the Peanuts Movie yesterday.
You are awsome Steve! Keep it up, and take care! From a Bruins fan!
As a Devils fan i feel your pain right now Steve. Obviously our expectations were lower than yours but still with all the moves I expected to have a respectable team. It really sucks to see the Leafs struggling like that and I hope both our teams can figure it out.
“There’s the coffee”
This video started off sad, then he started yelling and it became funny. Then it was sad again. 😥
Thanks Steve!
Side note: I spit my coffee out when the wizard talk started 🤣
Thanks Steve!!
I cheered for the Leafs through Harold Ballard, the 70s, 80s, 90s, etc Um, I can't change to another team, that would be wrong.
...so just keep suffering, that's what Im going to do.
I'm a Sens fan at least something to forward too DJs a great coach that's why were more competitive and your sucking on the pk,but our pp is still shit pks good
Team can’t score because they just want to be spoon fed.
At least half this video is worthy of being in the end of year montage/next year's intro.
I love it. Wearing the old logo in the intro because they’re the same as before
The team is not the same since nylander signed last December
50 years of Hockey I can't figure this teams problems either. There almost Great on paper. It makes no sence to me man. I think I would consider letting 1 star player go, and picking up a few elite "D" men and a 4+ million back up goaltender..Not sure yet about letting Babs go. There's not really anyone to replace him with.
" GO LEAFS GO "
Where shall they find these so called elite d men?
Looking in from the outside, maybe because fans put up with it? I'm in Ontario and not a Leafs fan and I'm always amazed at how willing to forgive and quick to forget the fanbase is. If you measure the Leafs as a team that wins, miserable, as an organization aimed at making money, envy of basically the whole league. What other team can underperform for this long and still rake in this kind of cash? They don't really have any motivation to do better.
As an Oilers fan I generally feel bad you guys. It’s been Groundhog Day for us for 12 of 13 years. I feel the pain
This video is more sad, than that Nashville loss many years ago, when you just drank.
I just want to give you a hug through my screen. Xoxox
Toronto Maple Leafs ? I only know them as The Toronto Make Me Weeps.
Or make me wet
The kids got paid they don’t care anymore
Mike Babcock was just FIRED!
I've been waiting for this one!!!! (Sharks fan) I'm sorry Steve. Great content!
I'm done watching. Didnt suffer through the Kessel era for this
Mike Babcock been fired, Kyle Dubas needs to go as well!
This was real great stuff to watch AFTER the babcock news. Steve is so great at this shit. I AM SO IN NOW!
As a habs fan, seeing the leafs like this is all I ever wanted. But now that I got it, I just feel empty and sad. I miss our competitiveness
You know it’s bad when me, an Arizona fan, has more pride for my team than the leafs
The Coyotes are all about pride and hard work
"Tyson Barrie is the most disappointing Leafs acquisition in my entire lifetime"
Well there was Rask for Raycroft... Sorry.
Cale Makar is getting Barrie's points now. The secret the Avs didn't tell the Leafs was that Barrie's stats were inflated from playing first unit PP with MacKinnon.
The Blues were last in the NHL in January and won the Stanley Cup.
The Nationals were 19-31 and won the World Series.
This is the recipe for success!
Woah... That went from 0 to 100 reealll quick ;)
Penguins were 10th in the East in December when they won the cup in '16 👌🏻 stay positive bud
They also fired their coach
IIRC they fired their coach around then that was trying to make a star studded offense play defensively and then Sullivan let them loose?
Alex Hepner no. They fired Bylsma who had they playing very high risk and Sullivan came in and was able to create a little more structure
J. Townsend They fired Mike Johnson in ‘16. He was stifling the offence with his systems. Sound familiar?
The players need to stop playing for the names on their backs and start playing for the name on the front
Alex Di Sera best comment 2019.
didn't OV say something like that?
Agree
@@miahj6621 I believe Ovi did say that
they need to play for something cause they are not even playing for themselves
BEST VIDEO YET
Seriously, Steve. I hope this room is soundproofed.
ah yes I miss the sweet dangleman rants
we complain when the habs lose....be like habs fans you might win in your lifetime :O
neato im #99 to like the video
I love how as a Canadian, 90% of his references are U.S. based.
I knew this was going to be a good one
Love the lip-warmer Steve, looks good
