I can't believe the crew of the first half of the train never attempted to even warn the second half of the circus train that they had stopped. That ACL caboose should've had some red flares stored somewhere inside it. Set those off on the tracks behind the train and prey the crew of the trailing train sees them or something. The entire wreck could've been avoided, or at least severely lowered the damages if a wreck were to still occur
Just before the rear brakeman gets clubbed you can hear the whistle code from the engine ordering him to protect the rear of the train. He was climbing down to head back towards the second section to warn them with fusees or his lantern. If he hadn't been knocked out, he likely would have provided some warning to the second section.
