It is actually an offence to sell meat slaughtered by the halal or kosher rules for consumption by those not of the Islamic or Jewish faiths but whenever I raise this with DEFRA I get doublespeak not answers.
The practice of selling live chickens and then slaughtering them for the customers is also widespread. As they are selling live animals slaughterhouse rules don't apply but the Welfare of Animals Act 2006 does. Just try to get the RSPCA, PETA or any enforcement agency interested in that!

Reminds me of a similar situation in a country in Europe in the 1930s when moderate democratic parties thought they could control a growing semi-paramilitary party seeking to make inroads into the parliamentary process and weed out the unsavory elements, once the leaders had been seduced by the possibility of a degree of power and influence and pacified by the respectability of being accepted into the democratic political fold. More concerned about votes than actual animal welfare
When I first developed an interest in politics in the very late 1970's I became interested in what was then known as the Ecology Party which later became the Green Party. They made a strong point that they were neither left nor right wing but represented a new politics not on that spectrum.
At some point, probably after the fall of the Soviet Union when Western communists realised that they were now seriously out of fashion and almost nobody wanted to buy what they were selling anymore the Green Party started to become infiltrated by the hard left. The reds were now able to reinvent themselves with a green clothes makeover. Smart people recognised what was going on and called them the "Watermelon Party"; green on the outside, red on the inside. However, many were still taken in by the name thinking that they were the party that cared about the environment.
This new infiltration/hijacking is so absurd that no one can be fooled by the "green" tag any longer so I welcome this.
I moved away from them a long time ago, maybe decades now.

I heard a Muslim cleric explaining that halal slaughter was painless because the knives used are very sharp. Perhaps, therefore, any surgery he has is without anaesthetic since scalpels are very sharp too. You’re right, this barbaric practice has no place in the 21st Century and stone age religious mumbo-jumbo should not take precedence over our animal welfare laws. How was this ever allowed in the first place?
