  • Awesome Go-Around for this British Airways A380 coming in to Vancouver. Looks like she may have flared a little too early, and ended up floating before going around. What an impressive BEAST!! This is a definite must watch!! Second attempt was successful :)

Looks like they were going to land too deep due to excess speed over the threshold. Pilots made a damn fine and difficult at that stage decision. Great job by them and great job capturing a rare A380 Go around. BA can be proud of this one 👍👍👍

    • @maplebacon__

Don't think they had excess speed, looks like they got caught in ground effect and it caused them to float.

Nice catch! I was sitting on that plane coming in from LHR (over the wings, lower section); Never experienced a go-around before, let alone on as big a plane. people (including flight attendants) were pretty surprised - but everyone was very calm. Co-pilot explained the maneuver and that we'd go around again, landing 10 minutes later with no problems. He didn't actually mention the reason for the aborted landing, just that the last time he did it for real (not in a simulator), was 7 years ago. Interesting to see how close to the ground we were!

+AvgeekYVR When sitting in the exit row of the 380 you unfortunately don't have a good view, as there is only a small window in the door through which you can't see the ground when seated. So I wasn't really aware of how close we were to the ground. - Just a new experience feeling the engines accelerate when you expect to slow down :-)

I'm just wondering why? (Sifted through some, but not near all, responses and didn't see much.) Wonder if something wasn't configured properly, or maybe the pilot just didn't "feel right." Pilots? Help me out, please. If everything looks good on the screens and outside; everything's in place but you just have this little nagging feeling, do you abort? Or do you just trust your instruments and do what you've done hundreds or thousands or more times before, nagging feeling be damned?

    • @seannelson7209
      @seannelson7209 Před 7 lety +7

gomphrena in terms of why, its was because he was 'floating' too far down the runway - if he didn't go around, he might not have stopped in time. In terms of the nagging feeling, it's a tough one. I guess pilots are always encouraged to go around if you feel as if something's wrong, but most of the time you trust your instruments just as much as you trust yourself.

  • @sergevivier2023

That landing was the smoothest A380 touch down I have seen and I have seen a lot. Many pilot just ram the gear onto the runway to give themself lot's of runway to stop. The first attempt was going to be a smooth one also and the plane would not come down so the right decision was made to go around. Great pilot caring for a smooth landing and who can blame them for wanting to fly over a beautiful city one more time :-)

@AvGeekYVR...if I had to guess, he had one hand on the stick, the other on the throttles. Every pilot I know hand flies below 500 ft, AT off, exception is a CAT IIIb approach in auto land.
Its a matter of pride to be able to pull off that kind of low approach that precise then apply the power and pull gently on the stick to pitch up. Masterful flying. Characteristically British.

That's funny...you could tell, they floated the plane. They didn't pull the power out in time. You can tell because you can see the nose drop slightly, as if their first intention was to lower the nose. I guess by the time they realized what they did, they were to far down the runway and just killed the landing attempt. Right call.

My two cents: That did not look like an early flair. I had to watch and listen about four times...listening for changes in the pitch of the engine whine and I am pretty sure I heard a slight power up in the flair. It is certainly possible that he could have been caught in ground effect, but the technique for landing an Airbus (any Airbus for that matter) is flair to about 5 degrees at 30 feet as you pull off the power and the mains will settle onto the runway and you do not derotate until weight is on wheels..otherwise the landing is anything but kind to your back.
Any kind of power applied will cause the airplane to not sink and the slight nose down applied kept the airplane at a very precise distance above the runway. If ground effect and wind were causing this, I think we'd see more pronounced pitch oscillations to work the mains onto the runway or, in the alternative, an immediate application of TOGA power to get out of a possible runway overrun...the A380 typically takes a good deal of runway to get stopped as it doesn't apply all its reversers to slow itself down.
I could be wrong, but it took a lot of watching and listening to come to this conclusion...I've never seen an A380 float like that...A330...yes...but an A380 is a beast and the second you pull off the power, it will sink like the big brick (with wings) that it is...

Very nice catch. At the right place at the right time ! How much did you pay the sun to be so nice ? ;-)
Is it totally impossible it was intended as a (very) low pass. The approach is very stable and I can't see any attempt of a complete landing.
May be i'm wrong, but forme that was intentional.

Emirates uses Eco-friendly drywash for their 380s. No water, and only 3 times a year. Keeps the plane glossy and clean.

First thought: GA due to exceedAnce of tailwind-limit (see windsock on final) But then 2nd approach with Landing with estimated wind of same direction and strength as on the first one. So the real reason may remain undisclosed for ever - the crews and flight data monitoring office's secret.

I don't know the specific technique in the A380 but it sounds like they
left the thrust on a little too long. You can hear the engines spool up
as they flare, which is a function of the autothrust system in SPEED
mode. As speed bleeds off during the flare (as it is supposed to), if
you leave the autothrust active it will increase power as a result of
the pitch-up command of the flare. This will increase the energy the
aircraft has which extend the flare and increase the time before the
wheels touch-down. People do this to try and smooth out the landing, but
unless it is different on the A380, this is not the correct airbus
technique. The guidance is to simultaneously close the thrust-levers at
the same time as initiating the flare. All of this coupled with an over
flare (the aircraft gains height during the flare!) will likely lead to
    this situation.

      @avgeekyvr  Před 8 lety

+easyjet87 I heard that too! Just before the supposed touchdown, I heard a little rev of the engine, which probably gave just enough juice, plus the addition of the ground effect, caused this awesome beast to go around. Pretty great experience. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!! Hope you enjoyed!!

i think she had to go around because the captain added a bit of thrust while flaring, which caused the bird to get into the ground-effect :)

Yeah you can hear him yank the power back and forth on short final, probably got a tad too much trust just coming on ground effect. It was less a very late go around than an impossibility to land :-)

I was on this flight - I noticed it was taking a long time to get on the deck. After the go-around the captain came on the PA - "totally standard... something we practice for frequently" blah blah - no mention of why, so clearly "pilot error". :)
Thrust was not as impressive as on a previous abort on a 747, getting the A380 moving takes quite a while.

Decreasing performance shear led to an auto thrust increase at about 50 feet, then the typical offshore breeze tailwind kicked in.
