I heard over my radio while driving that a suicide, male was reported at my brother’s work place. I flew to it. I stood back in disbelief looking at my brother. Only a few of the troopers there knew who I was and put it together pretty fast. Everything the other troopers and fire dept did was SOP but they treated my brother’s body with nothing but respect and dignity. They had his wallet but I heard someone say we need a positive I.D. That’s when I let it known why I was there and identified him. They gave me space while I sobbed and held his hand. I was led away by someone and taken home. I will never forget the compassion shown for my brother’s body. Ever.

Now I have no clue how this accident happened, but I want to first express my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of this person. Videos like this can do more for highway safety than all the classroom driving classes can do. My nephew recently got his license and he told me they never showed the graphic films that I had told him about that they used to show student drivers. I think that is a huge mistake.

I have only had one call that bothered me, someone ran over someone and dragged them many miles all through the small town I live in. The actual call didn't bother me, the trail left on the road did. They tried to clean it up with a street sweeper but it was there till it rained two weeks later. Occurred to me that could happen to me working on the side of the road. Took me a few days till some random drunk guy doing a robot walk in front of me at a stop sign made me laugh and I was good after that. Prior to that I was kind of obsessed by the whole thing. My late brother worked as a mechanic at a NAPA store in Oklahoma and his boss was the fire chief. So he got interested in becoming a volunteer fireman and so his boss told him, "OK come with me next time we get a call if we're at work and you can stand and watch and determine if you want to do it or not." He told him if he wanted to do it he would make sure he had some training. Well a few days later they got a call about an accident so he rode along with his boss to the scene. It happened to be a minivan full of kids that had been t-boned by a truck where the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and hit the van. Everyone in the van and the truck driver died (two adults and five kids in the van and one single driver of the truck) many of which had been ejected. (Nobody was strapped in a car seat or seat belt.)
Now my brother and I used to look at the Rotten website to look at real life gore but when you are watching your boss picking up deceased children to be hauled away by the coroner, it hits different and he decided that being a volunteer fireman wasn't for him after all. He commended his boss for being able to work accidents like this. He told him "I don't know how you do it." It was a massive mess that took several hours to clean up. His boss told him "I can't and I have nightmares from this but somebody has to do this." I don't think my brother really recovered from that one time because for years he could not pass that spot without crying a little.

I got a call my eldest daughter was in a bad accident up the road. I raced there. Fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, several crashed cars and her Ford Explorer was crashed in a vacant lot into a billboard support. The drivers compartment was covered with a tarp…..I knew she was dead. I freaked out, she was 21. They were using jaws of life to get her out. I was so so hysterical they put me in an ambulance. I demanded to get out and get to her, finally they let me out. My son-in-law was there and calmed me down saying she was still alive and they were getting her out. She was T-boned, drivers side, by a stolen Cadillac, speeding, ran a red light, driven by an illegal and he was drunk! No licence either. Four cars were involved with multiple injuries. She recovered with back and neck injuries. The local judge gave him a low bond, he bonded out, fled and was never seen again. That was 29 years ago….she still suffers terribly from the injuries.

The last time they brought one, there was blood all over the interior of the car, the driver seat was bent in an unimaginable way. I’ve seen a lot of horrific things in my life, and up until now I’ve felt confident that I’ll be able to do my job without becoming too impacted mentally (utilising the services offered by the company I’m employed by, my own support system and outside resources). Having read the numerous comments from first responders here I’m second guessing myself a little. It’s given me food for thought, and a jolt into reality however. He told me some of the incidents he’d gone to :
One was where a female passenger’s right eye had popped out and rolled on to her left cheek, when she was thrown forward in a car crash, which sounded pretty gruesome until he mentioned that he once had to find and pick up all the fingers that had been severed off some teenager’s hands - they had been hanging their hands and arms out of the windows when the car they were in lost control at a roundabout and overturned.

Less likely- not always highly unlikely. When it's your turn, god takes you. I have seen it. We hiked up half domw on a sunny day. I insisted on us wearing harnesses. The next day, in 2019 Daniel did the same and god took her. Sunny day, same trail. She had a harness but was not clicked in to the cable and rain fell---on a sunny day. Gone. She was young and in great shape. Many times death is a random occurance. You can play it safe and still die. I have ridden motorcycles 20 years, jumped off cliffs on skis, etc. God protected me. When it's your turn, it's your turn.

They hit a rock wall head-on, instead of turning left at the light. His poor hip was about 180 degrees from where it should have been.
