  • Mem Deck Magic How and Why - Magic Stuff With Craig Petty
On today's episode of Magic Stuff Craig is going to be talking about memorising a deck of cards. There are several powerful routines you can do with men deck magic and unfortunately most magicians have never learnt a stack.
In this video Craig shares five of his favourite tricks with a mem deck. He then talks about why you should use a membership deck, how to memorise one easily and the difference between long term and short term memory. Finally he talks about how to use a member deck in the REAL WORLD.
If you use a mom deck or have ever considered memorising a deck this is a video that you absolutely should watch.

Hey Craig, I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that:
    1. Your channel is criminally under-rated for the topic of magic
    2. I'm a total noob at magic and your channel is really helping me
    3. You are keeping the craft alive by introducing magic to beginners
    4. You are always on point with the subject matter, you don't drift off into tangents
    5. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this for us beginners

Thank you!!! Finally, I now have some idea of how Dani DaOrtiz was able to accomplish some of the feats on his classic Penn and Teller Fooler. I love the idea of Jazzing-on, or riffing on. You have a certain set of skills, and then you just improvise on them. Now Jason Ladanye has me stumped. That guy has mad skillz. I have no concept about his methods. The stuff he does seems impossible.

Learned mnemonica - mostly because of this video - currently going through card college... no trouble with level 1 and 2, got my master, still working on level 3 for my PhD (I understand the principle, just need to practice my calls) :)
What an amazing weapon to have in the arsenal, a mem deck. Laymen will never suspect anything, they can't even start to think that one could be so crazy as to memorize an entire deck of card!
Thank you Craig, and for anybody else who is interested in learning menmonica, it took me around one week... At first I could go through the sequence but didn't have instant recall, that took a while longer. I practiced with a deck of cards with numbers on the back, mixing face up into face down, and going through for variation... Also used an app on the phone to practice any time I didn't have the cards with me.
After a while you just "see" the card numbers. You get a King of hearts in your hands and you just tell yourself "Oh hello Mr. 35!" It's a funny feeling :)

Man, I have an uncut sheet in Mnemonica above my bed, I have Peter Turner's Stack Watch that I wear a lot, I've tried the technique Rick Lax teaches on video and PDF from Penguin, I have an app sending me notifications every 10 minutes, but it doesn't stick if I skip a day or two. Now, what I'm going to try is just writing a schedule like you said and putting a few cards a day in my pocket where I keep my phone and every time I go to mess around on social media, I'm going to have to do a run through of the cards of the day. If that doesn't work, I'm going to sing it all at the top of my lungs until I either commit it to memory or get evicted from my apartment. Which ever comes first. Hahahaha. Great video as always!

Awesome advice as usual 😃 agree with everything you said! I used Dominic O’BRIEN memory system, with a 52 stop journey and a name and action for each card. A fair bit of homework in the beginning, but once you have the structure, it’s quite doable to know a stack in long term in about a week. It’s easy to practice and recall with the journey, especially when going backwards 😆 thanks again, Cheers M

I learnt Aronson stack years ago but I hardly ever use it it when I'm working. I think it's mainly because I find you need a table surface to perform a lot of the tricks and they also involve counting procedures. Would be good to see your 5 best routines with the mem deck Craig. I do think once you've memorised the deck inside out and leave it alone for a couple months. Once you come back to it and played with it again, after about an hour of practicing you've got the stack in mind instantly again. So it's just like riding a bike you never forget it.

Excellent vid, Craig. I learned Crosbie's shadow stack years ago. Didn't do any card magic at all since 2018, and easily picked up where I left off a couple of weeks ago. It took 2 evenings of refreshing my memory of the stack and I was back to instant recall. So that's over 3 years without using it at all but because I learned it properly originally, it was easy to refresh.
I mainly just use it for the estimation trick and an incredibly clean and fair divination of a card where they cut to a card I never see, then they shuffle. It consistently gets the strongest reactions of all the magic I do, and yet its also the easiest. A good presentation with a memdeck can turn a "pick a card" good trick into a "think of a card" absolute miracle

Excellent video as usual... I chose Woody Aragon's Memorandum stack, as it fits with the self-working / maths stuff I like to do. He has some really good stuff on mem deck / stack work in his Penguin lectures. One thing that stuck with me was his advice on letting someone shuffle your stack. He said... 'let them shuffle it... you are left with every other trick that doesn't involve stacks!' You have to be able to adapt. If you watch Woody's Penguin 2 show, he shows you Stewart James' favourite stack, which is produced from NDO. Juan Tamariz does some awesome stuff with his half-mnemonica stack work too... well worth researching.

Great video, Craig. I learnt mnemonica by using the Rick Lax trainer. Took 2-3 days to learn the system and be able to recall all the cards (albeit slowly), after a week or so it became second nature. I wanted to learn it mainly so I could perform Asi Wind’s acaan, which I can now perform. I plan to pick up Juan Tamariz mnemonica book so I can fully take advantage of this stack. Your video will certainly give me some ideas on jazzing in the meantime 👍

I know that this comment is probably a bit late but I wanted to through in a bit of psychology to help. People have trouble with mem decks at first (and give up on) is that they sabotage themselves by thinking they are memorizing one really complicated thing. A "machine" with 52 parts seems complicated. But that isn't what you are doing. You are memorizing 52 simple things. Associating 52 cards with 52 numbers. This is no more difficult that remembering the names of 52 people. If I asked you to learn the names of 52 people over the course of a week, you would probably find it a trivial challenge. Now, eventually, you will be memorizing more about the stack if you want to be throughly fluent but it is just a matter of building on the "frame" you have already constructed. You can do it!!

Throughout the process, shuffle the cards face up into face down so you’re learning card to number and number to card at the same time. Keep shuffling face up into face down so you get to see different sides of different cards come up throughout

Hi Craig - You memorize the deck and then repeatedly shuffle it. Surely that disrupts the order? To me, a novice, your shuffles don't look false so how does that work? Great stuff I enjoy all your vids.

They are false shuffles. I use a lot of false shuffles when I’m performing mem deck magic to throw off the audience.
I am planning on doing a video on false shuffles at some point so look out for it.

Ok since you asked. Been working daily with Aronson Stack. I meet the man in the 70s, was not into magic then. Three years ago I retire after teaching for 20 years. Hate gardening, chose magic. Saw a post on Magic Cafe about Aronson's Prior Commitment, a trick that fooled Penn and Teller. So bought Do the Impossible. Inside was a chart of the stack. Started with the first middle last cards. I have 100s of pieces of paper where I wrote down the order, over and over and over. Used peg words to get the stack. Do a 10 card reveal, makes me smile preforming it. Just started adding simple math. Just added in a faro. Love your spin pack peek, very cool. Hope you put mem deck on your Netricks project. Don't jazz yet, on the list of stuff to master. Thanks, great teaching.
