  • This video is a magical rendition of the story of my very unique four-parent family. Everything I talk about in the video is true, and these are the answers to the questions I most commonly get asked. Feel free to ask more questions in the comments section, but please be respectful.
    Basically, I have four parents: two moms and two dads. They're not divorced and I'm not adopted. My dads are gay and my moms are lesbian. The two couples had been friends for many years and then decided to have and co-parent a kid: me!

    Regarding the trick, it is descended from a routine commonly called Sam the Bellhop. The earliest version of a storytelling trick seems to come from the routine "The Queens Digging for Diamonds" in Professor Hoffman's "Tricks with Cards" published in 1889. Jean Hugard and Eric Mead have also made important contributions to this plot.

    So wonderful, so wise, and so important. My only additional small comment, would be for us all to strive to, not merely 'accept' each other as the beautiful and unique people we all are, but to go further and CELEBRATE our differences. In my mind, being 'accepting,' is just a small notch above 'tolerating.' And that's just not good enough. In this world, especially these days, we need as much positivity as possible. Thanks for the awesome video Daniel. As for your 4 parents, there's just no way they could be any more proud of YOU.

      My adoptive country, Japan, illustrates very well the difference between tolerating and accepting. Japan has no history of making homosexuality a crime. My native country, Canada, when I was 7 years old, sentenced a gay man to two consecutive life sentences for "gross indecency" to be served at "Her Majesty's" pleasure in a maximum security prison. This was worse than life for murder since "pleasure" implied no legal way to parole. We neither accepted nor tolerated homosexuality. That was in 1966. This was true from Catholic Quebec to Anglican(Episcopalian) Ontario.
      Japan never cared what you do in the privacy of your home. And certainly gay sex and even gay living is no exception. So homosexuality (bestiality, even pederasty in the old days etc...) was tolerated because it was never illegal. The same is true in Japan about religion: do not impose it on others but you are free in your home to practice the most bizarre religion. (This is why the AUM cult was such a problem to destroy).
      But to this day, in Japan, homosexual life type is not fully accepted. Gay families cannot exist legally. So Daniel's parents here could live in the same house but there would be two family registry (male-female) and Daniel would have officially one set of parents--- who ever declared him to be the son.
      I love the peaceful life in Japan. So I am quite torn about whether or not we should allow gay marriage. We should allow gay union but a marriage here must lead to a family registry. Perhaps we could have someone like Daniel into "two" family registries.
      Anyway I would hate to see the general tolerance of private life here be ruined by gay activism.
      I hope I do not insult you Daniel You are a great guy and God bless your parents, the full tetrarchy of them!
      PS I am a scientist too.... this is why I could easily immigrate here and become Japanese.

    • @Musikpunx
      @Musikpunx Před 2 lety

      @SankeyMagic That´s so true.
      I am glad that Daniel grew up so free and happy.
      I remember that 45 years ago, when I was a child, we had a gay couple and also a lesbian couple in the neighborhood.
      My parents thought it was kind of strange, but they said these people were "nice anyway".And I think a lot of neighbors thought that way back then.
      Of course, it was still far from a celebration of differences, but it kind of worked.
      Anyway, I didn't notice any hatred towards the couples, as you often hear or read today.
      My father was also a racist, though he only ever expressed that to my mother and me. In public he always behaved normally towards black people, for example. Probably he himself suffered the most from his image of man.
      That's why I think a lot would be achieved if everyone would just let the other person live the way he likes it. No matter whether he himself likes it or not.
      For our future, however, I wish that there are such posts like ours no more, just because no one has to think about it.

      Well you clearly aren't a democrat. Half the country voted blue because they literally can't even believe that some people would want to be different and share a different perspective.
      You seem to be in the minority, according to the Media and Governments of the world, who all unanimously, with one voice, tell us that everyone should hate eachother no matter what, and that no matter, do not ever stand together and definitely, definitely, dont ever stand up against them.
      Just saying your comment is completely contradictory to the current consensus in the world, which is that no one should ever be allowed to share a different opinion, let alone celebrate it. You're playing a dangerous game with comments like that.

    I understand that I’m incredibly late to the boat on this video and I’m getting way too parasocial but, as a queer parent, I have to shout from the mountain top that your parents MUST be so _unbelievably_ proud of you. Sounds like they genuinely are, and they let you know it - often. This video made me smile and laugh and just cry the ugliest of tears. (Joyful tears!)
    Bravo - best card magic I’ve ever seen, right here. Absolutely delightful. I’ve commented before on another video about how I think of you as the second coming of Ricky Jay (or perhaps the third coming of Dai Vernon, six in one - half dozen in the other, etc, etc…) but, my goodness, that was so sweet and incomprehensibly beautiful for queer parents everywhere. Thank you for being you. 🩵🤍🩷

My friend’s all thought out must be cool to get four times the gifts on holidays. But much Like Daniel I had 4 parents to answer to wherever you messed up, which happened plenty.
    But I am extremely lucky to have four loving parents and unique perspectives for upbringing. And I can’t express fully hope important it is to me that they all get along amazing. That fact may be what I am most thankful for as a age, no into my late 30’s. Thanks for the share Daniel!

    I love your story, the first time i hear it was the intro to fool us. and it was not till a while later i came across the youtube channel. Apart from parents being cousins there was nothing much different about my childhood. We lived in a little village were every one new every one and to see a non white person was a rare happening, and even rarer still was to hear any one say any thing about homosexuals that was positive. My parents were the exception, So many differnet people came and went in our house, and the best thing was having every one from all these different backgrounds chilling out having a laugh togather. We learnt so much from eachother.
    So cool that today people can speak up and be proud of who they are (And who there parents are) i know we still have long long way to go. But we are i think we are making steps in the right direction and long may that continue.

    I love watching your card tricks and your family story is fantastic and that you are able to just be able to explain that this is just a different normal is also great. It must give you tremendous satisfaction to explain your background to people. Such a brilliant ice breaker.
    Now I also have an atypical family background and I also love to explain it to people so I hope you won't mind my sharing. I was adopted soon after birth and grew up with Mum and Dad and my adopted sister. Later in life I was contacted by someone who it turned out was my biological father. He had gone on to marry my biological mother and they had three more children together before they eventually separated. Then my father remarried and had two more children by his new wife. Sadly his second wife died and he remarried and became a step father to his new wife's son. This meant that I now have an adopted sister, three biological siblings, two half siblings, and a step brother. Add into this mix the fact that my wife and I eventually adopted from China and now we have two generations of adoptees and my daughter (who presumably has family in China) had four parents and twelve grandparents (sadly not all living and not all contacted). If we throw race and nationality into the picture then the bulk of the people are white British but my father's second wife was Jamaican so we have some of that in the mix and obviously our daughter and her other parents and grandparents are presumably Asian Chinese. Then we have the fact that my adopted sister is living in France and we are in the Netherlands and I am now Dutch.
    A true spectrum and an immense source of pride for me and I can tell that you have the same pride.
