There are...a lot of spelling tricks in magic. Too many. They raise lots of questions, like "Why are you spelling a card?" "What does this have to do with finding my card?" "What are you doing with your life?" This simple (yet impressive) version of the trick I teach here doesn't seek to answer these existential questions. The "joke" about "the name of your card" provides a little bit of internal logic -- just enough for a basic magic trick.
NOMENCLATURE:
I've called this trick "Spellbound" because "a spelling card trick" isn't very catchy. These days, "Spellbound" usually refers to a trick where a silver coin transforms into a copper coin (or vice versa) using a specific technique. However, it's a cool sounding word and it contains the word "spell," so it fit the bill. Luckily, there's a precedent for using this name. A trick (from an unknown creator) published in The Royal Road to Card Magic (1948) that involves spelling to a selected card is also called "Spellbound" (page 181).
CREDITS:
- The earliest reference to a card trick that involves spelling was published in 1889 in "Tricks With Cards" from an unknown creator. Since then, hundreds of variations have been published in the literature -- far too many to catalogue briefly.
- The predecessor and inspiration for many common spelling tricks is "Thought Stealer," published in The Royal Road to Card Magic in 1948 by an unknown creator. A modified version under the same title was published in Card College Volume 1 by Roberto Giobbi, which is where I first encountered this general plot.
- The method that places the joker a known number of cards above the selection is called the floating key principle, which I first learned in Simon Aronson's book Simply Simon. However, the use in this trick is slightly different from Simon's use.

This reminds me of a similar spelling trick I know!
- Take nine cards, and lay them in piles of three.
- Have the participant select a pile.
- Pick up the pile, and flash them the bottom card. Have them memorize it.
- The participant picks a second pile, on top of which you drop the pile they picked.
- Drop the 6-card pile on top of the final pile.
(The rest of this trick can happen in their hands if you're confident they can do it)
- Ask them the name of their card.
- Deal cards in a pile to spell the number/face, drop the rest on top.
- Deal cards in a pile to spell "of" (2), drop the rest on top.
- Deal cards in a pile to spell the suit (with the 's'), drop the rest on top.
(Then either:)
- Deal four cards. Their card is the next card to be dealt.
- Deal five cards. Their card is on top of the pile.
(Spell for this step too. If their name is four or five letters long, or has a nickname that long, use their name. Try to use something personal to them. If you have to pick a safe word, I suggest using "MAGIC")
Ok, but how would that work? Ace of spades is one letter off from ace of clubs… wouldn’t that mess up the trick?
Ace does not work as far as I know
@@FlummoxTheMagnificent It's a math trick. All card numbers have between 3-5 letters, and all suits between 5-8. The way that stacks are dropped results in success no matter what.
The card always starts as the 3rd card down.
After the first deal (spelling the number), the card is always the 7th card down.
After the second deal (spelling "of"), the card is always the 5th card down.
After the third deal (spelling the suit), the card remains the 5th card down.
So, after spelling "MAGIC" (or any other 5 letter word), their card will always come up.
All that matters is the first deal is at least 3 cards, and the third is at least 5. Dealing any additional cards does not change where their card is in the stack, since it has already been dealt.
(I did notice I made a mistake in the original comment that I've now corrected)

Hey my name is Kevin and I would love to do your class I know and have a lot of magic and I have loved it and was amazed as a child and still have some of my old magic from the early 80's but I have always had a not so great presentation specially in front of strangers or bigger crowds. I would like the help you are offering. I've been a widow since 2015 and was in an accident Dec 11, 2017 now I'm disability so money is tight . 1ST Real card trick i learned was Spellbound but i use a simple pinky break to locate and control the selection and basically take it from there

huh. I think this is the first time I've seen a magic trick with an element of math in it. Its a mixture of math and language. Could be a useful teaching tool.

Hi Daniel. i dont normally like card tricks like this, where we count so many cards to find the chosen card. I have learned several self working card tricks like this, and i recently learned a similar version of this trick before.
I like your version the best.

I was thinking while you were teaching us the secret, and i want to ask you this.
1) can we NOT USE those 4 certain cards, The 2, 4, 8, and 10, and leave them in our pocket, or put aside, under a table, Etc, and use 4 other cards? This way they cant get chosen .
2) no matter what 4 cards we put in our 11 card stack below the upside down joker, can we cut the deck in two halves and have the spectator choose a half, us using a magicians choice, and us keeping the top half and put the bottom half aside, we use the top half for the spectator to choose a card from, this way the 11 cards from the bottom of the deck cant get chosen and the joker doesnt get exposed. Then they put it face down on the magicians half that they just picked the card from,which is the top half and then we put the original bottom half on top of the chosen card, which is on the original top half?
This method is to make the spectator think he has a choice to choose a half to pick from before choosing a card.
3) instead of using #2, where we have the spectator place his card on the top half which is in the magicians hand still, we can put both halves next to each other, and give the spectator another magicians choice of which half to put their card on. This gives the spectator another chance to be a part of the trick, which will make it more amazing when we find their card. If they choose the pile from the bottom half, then we instruct them to put their cardon top of the top half . This idea #3 might be a good idea and work to our advantage, Of course,. But this is also an iffy idea, coz if they choose the bottom half the first time and we use the top half, then it will not look good if they chose the top half the second time to put their card on, and we give them the top half, they could catch on to our force.what do you think?
They could be so caught up in the trick that we might get away with our secret force. Lol.

it does take a litle bit of fast thinking to count the letters correctly. Too bad that in my native language (portuguese) the spelling of the suits and some of the card values are too long. I guess I can make it work, but it will alter the cards to remain below the joker.
Nice trick, and well explained. Thanks for sharing. For the excluded cards, you can get to 11 with "The Ace" and it's a club? "Clubs" - so throw in "T-H-E" and leave out "O-F"

Spanish is tricky here...porque "corazones" y "diamantes" ambos tienen nueve letras, "treboles" tiene ocho, pero "picas" solamente tiene cinco... es dificil. También hay mas variación entre las palabras por los números. Y lo siento, mi español es muy oxidado.
@@DanielRoyMagic i just managed in spanish taking out all 4s, 2s, 5-7-9-Q of diamonds and king of spades, but it should be 12 cards that you need to give away before joker and always reach for 12 or 13. saludos and muchas gracias Daniel, you are great.

The bit I'm missing is where does the 5 of spades land after its placed back in the deck. Time is 22:20. Is it next to joker card or in the 11 cards.
When you cut off the top 1/3rd of the deck, you place the 5 of Spades on top of the cut.
You then put the rest of the deck on top of the 5. Since the Joker was 12 cards from the bottom, it is now 12 cards above the 5.

Though the graphic is crude, I hope you can see that there is 11 cards separating the Joker and Their Card. As long as the trick is followed properly, this will always happen
I think im going to try this trick... I bartend and where I work there's times where I can dazzle the patrons... but I think Ill switch it up and have THEM spell it too cause I think the inclusion will be nice!
Great idea! Just be sure to guide them properly in the spelling and have the spelling "plan" figured out in your mind before giving them instructions. In an environment like a bar, having the patron "do the magic" is a great idea.

i dont understand when you place their card into the deck after cutting a 3rd how are you finding / controlling that card?
Their card will always be the 12th card from the joker since after the cut you control which pile you are dropping on top.

With the ten letter cards, you could get 12 by counting the two spaces, but it'd seem kind fishy

Since my mother tongue is not English, I knew it was gonna be a language related exception.. But what an brilliant one.
Now I need to find a group of English speakers and befriend them.
Great magic trick, too bad it doesn´t work in my language
So it occurs to me that we have forgotten a major advantage that the magician has over the audience. The magician always knows where the trick is going. So if their card happens to have 13 letters, say like the ace, 2, 6 & 10 of diamonds then simply put the joker on top of the pile to start your count & on the last letter turn the card over. That way you can spell out the ace of spades in full. Personally I will also be removing the 7, 8 & Queen of diamonds as part of my 11 cards as all 3 have 15 letters.
[I got the idea of using the joker for the count from an OG Paul Daniels card trick from my childhood which is quite fun & you may enjoy it too. I still do it on occasion & it always raises a smile & a few tuts. You need 10 cards from ace through to 9 of varying suits &.., you guessed it, A JOKER. On the face of the joker you can write cock-up or balls-up or tits-up or any slang term crashing & burning. Maybe crash & burn or EPIC FAIL from the modern vernacular. So arrange the cards in this order - [I have been doing this trick since I was about 12 & I'm 54 now & I have never forgotten this order. LOL] - 3, 5, Ace, 7, 9, 2, Joker, 8, 6, 4. So you spell out the letters of each card, in ascending order & turn over the card on the last letter. *[Important* you put the A & C cards to the bottom of the packet *do not discard or place on the table]* So A-C- & turnover on E & so on. You do ace, 2 & 3 but ask the spectator if they would like to try on 4 & when they do it they get the Joker. So you put the Joker back *on top* & simply do it again which produces the 4. Then say "try again" & maybe remind them to turnover on the last card - [even though they did the 1st time, unless they didn't] - & yes, again the joker is turned over which you again place on top & repeat to produce the 5. You then say the 3rd time's the charm, or 3rd time lucky, or the like as you hand it to them to try again. Again they get the joker & again you repeat the previous. Then say "look, I'll show you again only slowly this time" & do 7 then hand it back to them for 8. [You may need to encourage them by now because they do get a bit exasperated.] So after you produce 8 say "I can see you are getting frustrated but we're down to 2 cards & so you have a 50-50 chance this time & I'm routing for you" & some will refuse to do it, some will cheat to make sure they do it this time & some will complete it like a great sport. Enjoy. 😎

Couldn't you make this work with every card except the Ace of Clubs by saying "Ok, so we are looking for 'A Ten of Clubs' (or six)" and spell out the "a"? 😉
