  • Lexapro or escitalopram may treat depression and anxiety. Actually Lexapro contains the same active component as Celexa. Aggressive marketing promoting the drug as superior to other available options succeeded in boosting total sales well in excess of $14 billion. Unfortunately studies fail to show Lexapro offers any unique advantages over other similar SSRIs such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft. Recent investigations suggest not only are antidepressants overprescribed but their effectiveness compared to inactive placebo therapy remains subject to debate.

    I think the problem is we evolved to be living a simple life hunting and gathering living in small communities. Instead we're in this big clusterfuck of products, technology making us hate ourselves and driving us apart, and a never ending drive to work ourselves to death to buy shit we don't really need. I think sometimes the only true answer to my anxiety issues would be buy a plot of land off grid, get as self sufficient as possible, and just enjoy my life with my family with very minimal things.

I don't drink or smoke and never have. I am against psychiatric drugs unless under extreme circumstances. That said my blood pressure was 188/119 suddenly while working. I went to doctor and they gave me an as needed blood pressure med and strongly encouraged a small dose of Lexapro saying it's been known to help blood pressure. Anyway I was skeptical and hesitant. So I took the blood pressure med and watched..My systolic top number came down but my diastolic was still in the high 90s. Because I know the dangers of having consistent high blood pressure. I decided to take half of the 5mg dose just to see what it did. It worked it brought my bottom number down to 80. I also was able to sleep and relax like I hadn't in weeks. For me so far it left me impressed.

    It’s like a therapist once told me. They have to give a diagnosis (i.e. generalized anxiety disorder) in order for insurance to cover therapy. And a person may genuinely need a therapist to talk to, even if they don’t have a DSM5 diagnosis. The same is true in medical billing. Insurance companies require diagnoses for treatment. Just having symptoms isn’t enough. So if inaccurate diagnoses weren’t given, a lot of people would fall through the cracks. But too many people identify with their damn diagnosis like it’s a badge.

      @billpiechocki Před 3 lety +5

      @8randi, Yeah, Ikr... It almost seems like he's "Anti" SSRI's... In my experience, SSRI's, specifically Zoloft, and Lexapro, have worked beautifully. I think one thing the good doctor says that is very relevant is that if the person taking the medication doesn't actually suffer from depression or GAD, then there is a real possibility that neither Lexapro or any other SSRI (in this scenario) is gonna work; and the only thing the individual may/will experience are the side effects. Kinda like with adderall, if an individual genuinely suffers from ADHD, the drug will work, and will have a calming effect despite the fact that it's a CNS stimulant, what's known as the Paradoxical Affect. However, if an individual were to take it who doesn't suffer from ADHD, they're going to experience a "Speedy", or maybe even an euphoric affect. Lexapro works well for me - as have other SSRI's - I believe, because I genuinely suffer from both depression and GAD. This has been my experience, I hope whatever medication you may be taking (if you are taking medication) is working. And if you are considering medications, I hope that what I have shared might help you make the right decision.

      Lexapro saved me. But try to start with a low dose. I personally started with 2.5 mg for 3 days, then 5 mg for a week and then 10 mg till this day . At first you may feel a little bad because your brain adjusts to it, there s some balancing and regulation going on there but after 1 or 2 months..omG you ll be happy you started.
      It is important to start low dose to make your body adjust gently .
      I ve used klonopin 0.5 it put me into a coma at night literally ..it was a nice feeling but unfortunately in just a month I became resistant to it.. I switched it to diazepam... since diazepam is easier to taper off in case I need to and I don t have such a strong resistance as I did with klonopin.

    I was on this drug for a few years. I'm not sure how much it helped. I was having panic attacks. I think it may have made it easier for me to abuse my body and keep it together. Like it allowed me to drink more and avoid the anxiety and panic. That's not good.
    Lastly, getting off this drug was the worst few months of my life. Major mood swings, instability, and electrical shock sensations.
    Ask lots of questions before going on. See if you can make life changes first. Good luck to everyone.

      I’ve heard those you’re supposed to taper off very very slowly.

      I'm amazed that you said it allowed you "to drink more and avoid the anxiety and panic." Did your doctor know about that when you were taking it? I've been looking for some med to help me with anxiety that I get as a jazz singer, front man. Previously, only a couple glasses of wine seemed to work but then I wasn't supposed to combine those two, even with less alcohol. Not sure you'll get this, since a long delay from my comment on yours.

    I had crazy weird anxiety randomly for first time in my life, doc prescribed this against my wishes. Tried it once felt like underwater. I stopped drinking monster and ran more and it all went away. I was so close to becoming a zombie from this stuff for short term anxiety.
