Mirtazapine

  • Mirtazapine or Remeron treats depression and appears especially well suited among those also suffering from anxiety and disordered sleep. Mirtazapine has been largely eclipsed by the more popular SSRIs including Prozac, Celexa, Zoloft and Lexapro. Surprisingly all of the currently available antidepressants appear to offer about the same degree of improvement from depression.
Not uncommonly multiple antidepressant medicines are necessary to control symptoms. Mirtazapine may offer some advantages in combating the adverse reactions caused by other prescription agents. It improves appetite, often resolves sexual dysfunction and counteracts diarrhea associated with some of the other commonly used therapies. Mirtazapine also stimulates appetite.
Unlike most antidepressants that require more than a month to become effective, mirtazapine begins improving depression within 1-2 weeks. Full effects generally require up to a month. Somnolence or sleepiness remain the most prominent side effects of mirtazapine. For this reason the entire dose should be taken shortly before bedtime. Unlike the situation with other antidepressants, relatively few complications arise on discontinuing mirtazapine.

I don't want to sound overly dramatic, but I swear that discovering about, and taking, this drug has been one of the most important life-changing things I've ever done in my life. I went from like 10-20min of REM sleep for YEARS to literally 2 hours per night. I don't have any side-effects, and I don't feel groggy or weird. I think I just got so used to feeling in a fog from years and years of exhaustion. I only take 3.75mg, which is half of the lowest kiddie dose 7.5mg and I am out within an hour or two. It doesn't seem to disrupt sleep architecture in a negative way, it feels like it improves natural sleep. After 2-3 days of starting this, it was the first time in like a decade or more that I didn't feel tired. It's been a miracle. Thanks for the in-depth video!

My Dr just prescribed it to me for insomnia (7.5mg at bedtime) and I’m hesitating to take it because of the weight gain side effect that seems to plague so many that take it. He did leave out one crucial fact that you should be aware of though, Mirtazapine is an antichollinergic substance meaning it lowers acetylcholine levels in the brain and throughout the body. Acetylcholine is one of the most essential compounds to us as humans, it regluates sleep, histamine production, memory, visual preception, mood, and more. This is bad in the case of mirtazapine because you want to have acetylcholine, but mirtazapine being a muscarinic receptor antagonist blocks our body from producing normal levels of acetylcholine.
Side effects of antichollinergic use include, dry mouth, hot and cold flashes, depression, anxiety, early onset dementia, alzhimers, delirium, psychosis, intoxication, brain fog, insomnia, narcolepsy, and parkinsons disease due to dopamine suppression caused by antichollinergics.

I just need something to help me sleep when I have work the next day. Not one single doctor has been able to be honest with me and talk to me about helping me fall asleep they never speak about these experiences. they want to prescribe me things that have affects on other aspects and not something that helps me sleep, I've lost jobs to this sleep issue and I feel like I will lose my current one too if this keeps happening, it can take me up to 6 hours to fall asleep and if I need to wake up at 5 in the morning it's just not possible like that. I guess my question is, when you started this medication did you have negative effects like the ones I experienced? seeing you reply to YOUR OWN comment about how awful it was has made me even more sceptical about taking it which is a good thing I think.

I was on 60-70mg Mirtaz but I had to lower down because it would trigger my restless leg. Now I have 30mg Mirtaz and 10mg Olanz for my insomnia and anxiety, and have clonazepam for my restlessness which works wonders and I am able to finally able to have more consistent sleep.

Why didn't my pharmacist inform me of all this today when I picked up my prescription... Kidding, sorta. Only warning was sleepiness.
This was an impressive array of informative facts in about as short a time frame as it could possibly be done in a fairly easy to understand way.
    Thank you.
Doc has me starting half of a 15mg dose. Easing me in and I'm sure will ease me out if need be. I feel relatively safe taking this relatively well tolerated medication.
