  • Tom Cruise’s Horror film reboot unleashed The Mummy (Sofia Boutella) and her army of zombies, after a plane crash at Waverley Abbey in Surrey. My film takes you on a tour around the historic abbey in search of the locations used in the film.
The Mummy starring Tom Cruise was the 2017 horror reboot filmed largely in England and Namibia. Cruise stars as U.S soldier Nick Morton who uncovers the tomb of Princess Ahamanet in Iraq. She was mummified while still alive so is really annoyed! The plane on which Cruise and archaeologist Jenny Halsey (Annabelle Wallis) are transporting the mummy’s sarcophagus crashes at Waverley Abbey! At the crash-site, the excellent Algerian actress Sofia Boutella comes back to life and starts wreaking havoc. She needs to feed on human flesh to regenerate and the carcasses of her victims are transformed into an army of zombies. As with a typical Cruise movie it is packed with breathtaking real-life stunts and action sequences.
The film was loosely based on the 1932 Boris Karloff classic but it did not perform as well as had been hoped at the box-office as a result plans for a Dark Universe horror franchise were shelved. Having re-watched the movie I think it is time for a reappraisal? Tom Cruise and Annabelle Wallis are great with excellent chemistry. Sofia Boutella as the Mummy is stunning and gives a fresh interpretation to the part. The CGI looks great and I think on a re-watch the film delivers action and stunts up to the usual standard expected from a Tom Cruise vehicle. The film did not perhaps deliver the horror chills that some were expecting and is more of a modernisation of the popular Brendan Fraser vehicle The Mummy, with it’s Indiana Jones-style mix of action, adventure, comedy and horror.
Filming on the movie began in England on the 3 April 2016. Locations featured in the film in England included the Natural History Museum in London, Radcliffe Square, the Bodleian Library and New College in Oxford and Waverley Abbey in Surrey.
Waverley Abbey appears in an aerial shot during the crash sequence. It can be seen in a news bulletin in a pub sequence with Cruise and Wallis. Filming at the remains of Waverley Abbey in Surrey took place during one day in 2016. Much of the filming takes place in the under-croft of the lay brother’s quarters, which features fine columns and vaulting. Waverley Abbey has been a popular location with film-makers over the years and has been featured in 28 Days Later, Into the Woods, The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Hot Fuzz and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
Located next to the River Wey Waverley Abbey is run by English Heritage where you can visit the remains of the monastic buildings and church. This was the first abbey built in England by theCistercian monks in 1128. By 1187 the Abbey housed 70 monks, 120 lay brothers and provided shelter to pilgrims and travellers. The monks farmed the surrounding land and were active in the wool trade.
The Abbey has been visited by Kings, in 1208 King John spent a few days at the monastery but later briefly confiscated the assets from the monks. Henry the third visited the abbey to take communion in December 1225. After King Henry the Eighth’s dissolution of the monasteries the abbey was largely dismantled and the stone used to build nearby Waverley Abbey House and a house at Loseley.
The abbey consisted of a large church, chapter house, dormitory, refectory, cloisters and latrines.
During World War Two the abbey site formed part of the defensive line created to protect London and a number of pillboxes, anti-tank defences and ditches can still be seen.
The abbey is 2 miles away from Farnham, it has a small car park but no amenities for visitors. The ruins are accessible after a short 5 minute walk along the lakeside path and across a field. Entry is free and the site is open during reasonable daylight hours. A free audio tour can be downloaded from the English Heritage website. Location Address: Waverley Abbey, Surrey, GU9 8EP.
