  • Wroxeter Roman City was the fourth largest town in Roman Britain. Today you can visit the remains of the Roman Baths, the impressive old works, one of the tallest building remains of Roman Britain. Set in a tranquil location beside the river Severn in Shrewsbury, Shropshire. My film takes you on a full tour around the remains, a reconstructed townhouse (as seen on tv) and museum.
    Reasons to visit Wroxeter:
    • Well preserved Roman Bath-house.
    • Impressive ”Old Works” entrance to the Baths.
    • Tranquil location, beautiful countryside.
    • Remains of forum colonnade.
    • Replica Roman townhouse as seen on Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day.
    • Excellent museum.
    • Market hall and shop foundations.
The ruins of Wroxeter stand in tranquil countryside, surrounded by flat, open fields. The size and depth of the solid wall which divided the exercise hall from the Roman Baths gives a real impression of the true size of the Roman buildings. To give some idea of scale Wroxeter city was once the size of Pompeii in Italy.
    The History Bit
The Romans called Wroxeter city Viriconium Cornoviorum. Originally the area was the land of the Cornovii tribe, who had a hill fort on the nearby Wrekin. Shortly after the Roman invasion the Romans established a fort here in the late AD 47, which controlled a major ford over the river Severn. After the Roman military left this area became a tribal settlement, which became the fourth largest city in Roman Britain, with up to 5,000 citizens.

The Roman re-enactors featured in this film include the excellent Ermine Street Guard who put on displays throughout the year at various Roman sites and are well worth going to see them in action.
