  • Roman Chester is one of the UK’s best historic cities to visit. Visit the Roman ampitheatre and walk the Roman walls. My film takes you on a walking tour around Chester to see all of the Roman sites that you can visit today. Most of the sites are free to visit.
Chester is located in Cheshire close to the Wales border. The Romans founded Chester over 2,000 years ago when they built the fort Deva, to help suppress the tribes in Wales. Today the bustling city is a great place to visit, blending history with great shops, restaurants, nightlife and a variety of great places to visit like the popular Chester Zoo, the historic Rows shopping galleries, a 1000 year old Cathedral, built on the site of a Roman Temple and the smallest racecourse in England. Chester was a major Roman city, which has the largest Ampitheatre built in Roman Britain and the most complete Roman City Walls that can be visited today in Britain.
    Reasons to Visit:
    • Largest Ampitheatre in Roman Britain. Stand in the centre of the arena where gladiatorial fighting took place 2,000 years ago.
    • Tranquil Roman Garden, containing remnants of Roman buildings from across the city. .
    • Most complete Roman City Wall and 2 mile scenic wall walk..
    • Deva Experience.
    • Excellent Grosvenor museum with a fine collection of sculptures.

    Roman Britain History Bit
The Romans founded the city over 2000 years ago and called it Deva. It was an important city built for the 20th Legion at a strategic location on the river Dee, with a harbour intended to support the Roman invasion of Wales and Ireland. After the Roman invasion in AD43 the Romans established a permanent military base here by AD70. The Romans remained in Chester for over 300 years and established the layout of the city’s streets of Chester.
VISITING Chester is an English cathedral city located close to the border with Wales. In addition to it’s history Chester is a vibrant, dynamic city full of restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs, hotels, racecourse, zoo and theatre. With so much to see and do you will always find something new each time you visit.

The Roman re-enactors featured in this film include the excellent Ermine Street Guard who put on displays throughout the year at various Roman sites and are well worth going to see them in action.
