    Here's your joke: Victor Borge only knew two pieces of music, one of them was Clair de Lune, and the other one wasn't...

    The reason this is called “the old style of playing” is because sadly, so many people simply cannot play this well any more. Yes, there are now many young pianists who can play at technically very high standards, but to emote like Borge does here, you have to have lived through emotionally charged times. Many young kids who these days, thank goodness, live carefree lives, could not begin to comprehend what it must have been like for Borge to be exiled during a world war. Such experiences as that generation went through can be heard in their music making. Thank goodness they made recordings for posterity.

      Anyone can have a background that makes their play more stylistically entertaining, the ones with decades of experience are just conditioned to articulate it better.

    This is wonderful .... The late Victor Borge piano playing style to me is very soothing to listen to ..... his interpretation and his touch were among the best ... but so many times he joked much more than piano playing .. , it is very nice and rare to hear he play all the way through without joking ... But when he does that, ... IMHO, anyone can tell that he was one among the great classical piano player. ..

      Best interpretation I've heard. He was capable of. Playing it faster, but this recording demonstrates his absolute control the result is the clarity in his playing. Every nuance of the arrangement can appreciated, and therefore, much more pleasurable to listen to.

    Beautifully played!! I actually prefer a tune like this played more slowly than some of the big names play now, so we can savor the nuances. As I recall, in a typical show, Mr. Borge would play around with pieces, and interject his signature comedic touches, but at the end of a set, he would sit down and play masterpiece like this without interruption, to a spellbound audience. A unique and wonderful talent, and beautiful performance here!!

    This is an interpretation by a true exponent of The Golden Age of Pianism. Bear in mind that this is not surprising given that he was a student of Liszt's last pupil, the Scot but Germany-based pianist Frederick Lamond. He also taught wunderkind Ervin Nyiregyhazy, (b. 1903- d.1987.)

  • @marcoguadagnini412

    To quote William Butler Yeats, Borge goes with his interpretation in "the deep heart's core" of this delightful and melancholic Kreisler's jewel

  • @rtreadwell7887
    @rtreadwell7887 Před 4 měsíci

    It's not inconsequential that his teacher was Frédéric Lamond who himself was taught by Franz Liszt. There is a voice recording of Lamond, in which he speaks of his time with Liszt: he tells of Liszt's contempt for pianists who play too fast and lose sight of the all-important musical aspect. A lot of this wisdom seems to have filtered through in Borge's wonderful playing.

    Heard Mr.Borge playing Liszt's étude Il Sospiro, and that was a great rendition. And he was able to play many pieces of the classical piano repertoire! However he disappointed me playing this very difficult piece. Many pianists of his time played this piece much better like Magaloff and Horowitz. Maybe he indeed joked to much and forgot about practising his repertoire.🤔

    Ich denke, er weiß genau, was er da spielt. Und warum er es genau so spielt. Mal verspielt und verziert. Mal mit Moll Akkorden, mal schneller und mal nachdenklicher. Mal tanzt uns die Melodie auf der Nase herum. Mal verzaubert uns seine Tänzelei und dann kommt doch wieder der Refrain. Und aus Liebesglück wird Liebesleid und Liebesglück.

      timothy pac he doesn't need a pair of new ear lol. That's just his taste. Although I can hear the brilliance of this tape but I don't like it either. It's just like I love Gould's Bach but hate his Mozart lol. Borge's style is very unique, and I would never recommend any piano player to learn from him. Because they mostly would only learn the surface of it, and ruin whole piece...

      @@igorkennaway3173 Why? What's wrong with liking and disliking different interpretations? Why does one's opinion have to be right? I really don't get it - art music is supposed to be one's own self-expression. How the hell can you even begin to claim somebody else's expression of themselves when they are the sole arbiter of that?
      Personally I disagree with the parent comment; this is one of my favorite interpretations, but just let them live their own fuckin life.
