    For some reason, I always felt like his piano arrangement is just so much more sad. Like there is more pain more longing in the piano than the violin, it misses the melancholy feel but takes a new draws out the notes and sorrow. I love them both so much.

      I believe it’s because of the more layers of sounds and melodies that is possible on a piano

    • @ClassicalDavid
      @ClassicalDavid Před 3 lety +1

      I totally agree, and I definitely think the major reason for it is that as a solo version, the performer must take the role of what would originally be a duet by himself only, which makes it definitely sadder in my opinion because the piece is about Love Sorrow and the player must reflect on it alone. That and Rachmaninoff's masterful arrangement skills make the magic for this piece on the piano and convert it in a very touching piece indeed.

      I don't think so;
      have you heard Kreisler's tone, it's something that no man can achieve on the piano because of the natural predisposition of the Violin to a more melodic sound. The juiciness of the Violin makes you feel every single note, while on the piano every layer is something that distracts from the main melody.
      Though it is just my opinion.

  • @retetuae
    @retetuae Před 4 lety +67

    This is incredible.
    From amazon "Window in Time" description:
    This collection of Rachmaninoff's solo piano performances relies on a mix of old and new technologies. Between 1919 and 1929, Rachmaninoff cut these 19 performances to piano rolls, which would then be played back through reproducing pianos capable of accurately re-creating the original performances through pneumatic devices that animated the rolls with living nuances and shades--a facet that differentiated the classier reproduction keyboards from the more common "player pianos." This set updates the technology with electronic devices--transparently, though expertly, replacing the pneumatics. Played back on a Bösendorfer Reproducing Piano, this collection sounds astounding, full of Rachmaninoff's lickety-quick motion and his punching intensity when striking the keys. There are 18 Rachmaninoff selections--some of them collaborations--and one gem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," taken to new places in this 1919 reading. --Andrew Bartlett

      It is a modern recording. A machine is playing. No living person is playing the piano. It is a sophisticated player piano using piano-rolls made by Rachmaninoff much earlier. For what it is, the result is pretty impressive, but still nowhere near as interesting as Rachmaninoff's actual sound recordings. It is dismaying to me how few people seem to understand what they are listening to here. The process is clearly described in the CD liner notes. Someone gave me this CD years ago, and I only listened to it once.
