  • Mobutu Sese Seko, was president of the now Democratic Republic of Congo for 32 years. He is one chapter of the story of the DRC that has stories of atrocities done by King Leopold of Belgium, The Assasination of Patrice Lumumba and The Congo War dubbed Africa’s World War.
Mobutu was the one who once changed the name of his country from Congo to Zaire in his Cultural Revolution to Africanize names of important institutions. Like a number of first generation African leaders, such as Jean-Bédel Bokassa, the army made Mobutu. He was one of the orchastrators of the coup against Patrice Lumumba and his death while working with the CIA and the Belgians.
Mobutu rose to power in 1965 after a coup de tat.
During his time in power, Mobutu amassed wealth that is estimated to be over 4 billion dollars. He was deposed from office when May, 1997, when rebel forces led by Laurent Kabila expelled him from the country.

A common trend I have managed to pick up - Power corrupts even the best of characters and wealth is too enticing it overshadows the humane side of a person. Either one is corrupted by power or by wealth, it's sad really.

That's a very good point that you raised here. Power does corrupt

But my question is: why does it happen mainly to African leaders?

@@johnkamanga4944 Ignorant comment - analyze world history, read about empires, monarchies and nations around the world, the disease of power is not mainly of African leaders.

At his graveside burial ceremony according to francophone magazine JEUNE AFRIQUE published in 1998, there were only 8 people in attendance.Quel malheur malgré tout ! A lesson for African leaders that all power belong to God

This is my favorite episode of yours, I wish you'd do another one on just how pervasive his cult of personality was. I think it rivals Mao Zedong or Josef Stalin's, if not surpassing them.

@missjune5738. What do you mean by: "After all his friend Lumumba did for him, really..."? To be bluntly honest with you, Lumumba did nothing special for Mobutu. Mobutu was a military guy and later on a well known journalist while Lumumba was a renowned trade unionist. 🙏🤝🇨🇩🇨🇩

He despised anything western that he changed his own name from Joseph Mobutu to Mobutu Seseko, yet when he got prostate cancer he went to Switzerland for treatment.

Mobuto Sese Seko must have been a leech in a former life, considering how much money he sucked out of Zaire.
