- In April 2019, The 30 year reign of Sudan’s Omar al-Bashir came to an end. Like previous Sudanese leaders, he was finally toppled by the army, which finally sided with the people over the president.
The country of Sudan itself, has had 15 coup attempts, five of them successful - more than any other country on the continent of Africa. One of them was the 1989 military coup that brought Omar al-Bashir to power.
It was al-Bashir's ability to play a skillful combination of internal and external balancing acts, plus ruthless repression as well as a divided opposition, that kept al-Bashir in power for three decades.
But eventually, it was something as simple and essential as the price of bread that lit the fuse to a challenge to his entire regime and the downfall of his rule of Sudan in 2019.
In this episode of African Biographics, we look at the rise and fall of Sudan’s Omar al-Bashir.

in Africa cruel leaders often get replaced by equally cruel leaders
Nope , in Sudan , it was a revolution not just replacement.
@@allenhass4054 We have them, OP is correct. Their names are Abdelfatah Burhan and Hamdan Dagalo. You cant kick out an authoritarian and replace them with other authoritarians; the revolutionaries messed up by accepting them to help lead the interim govt.
I don’t think anyone has the ability to be worse than Albashir and his regime
@@taifhassan7936 put me in charge and find out
These countries should have remained colonies 🤷🏽♂️
As a Sudanese, lived most of my life during his regime, I believe Omer Albasheer was a corrupt and not competent, and during his time Sudan had a great chance of a real success and development, but he and his pary stole all the money from the oil and gas industry at that time, for thier personal benefits instead of working on developing the infrastructure and building a robust economy..
The current economic downturn is due to the corruption of his government.
Omar is a monster
Brought down by bread price.
God is Great .
Nope, the revolution slogan was ( peace , justice and freedom) not just bread
@@allenhass4054 hey am in África the thing was started by citizens complaining about the Rising prices of bread. Wat i mean by God is Great is when Allah wants to take you down It starts with small isue.
How is god great when he allowed this man to kill millions?
@@T.Sullivan go ask your leaders bush ,blair , Obama ,macron ,camron, Trump ,biden , and the Queen , why they kill people's in syria ,irak , Afganistán they Will tell you
that’s fair cuz a lot of those families could only afford cheap food like bread, raising the prices might as well have been taking food directly out of their mouths
In 1980, as a young man, a back packer, I visited the Sudan. I had no place to stay, The Sudanese gave me a bed, I had no food- the Sudanese fed me. I said to myself: this is the Sudan, these are the Sudanese people. Up-Shee!
The longer i watched, the angrier i became. This country of mine was brought down by itself. And when i heard the ex prime minister was going to sign that agreement with the SPLA i felt hope but then Omar Bashir happened.
Know one knows what would happen to Sudan if that agreement was signed and now we never will.
Ps. I loved the video. Thank you for making it

It's the Arabs thinking they are Gods, killing the REAL INDIGENOUS peoples
What incensed me more was that Omar al-Bashir offered sanctuary to Osama bin Laden (who had organised and bankrolled a bombing in August 1998 in my country).
Foolish religious slaves. I see these people as black Africans but they call themselves Arabs. What a bunch of low self esteem folks 🤦🏾♂️
Since the coming of Arabs in Sudan, Sudan fall apart , kingdoms gone and civil war became a daily routine year's after year's in the country..How I wish the spirit of our Nubian ancestors will resins back on us ,the stolen heritage from us to rule the country and fix the mess our heroes keeps fighting in Kordofan and brainwashed brother's in government to Join us to build the Nation..
Sudanese have suffered, most specially we black inherbetance ,the original indinanoues people couldn't enjoy our own freedom the country we belong..Oh,old Nubain fore Father's,give us the spirit's you rule the world thousand years back to restore back our history ❤.. SPLA North WOOYEEE
as a sudanese this was 96% accurate
awesome work
Perhaps you could fill us in on the 4% of inaccuracies?
I hate the Arab majority, there is so much amazing indigenous culture, civilization and architecture, why throw that away for a foreign religion and foreign culture? Sudan overall is so diverse, not just Arab. There are 600 different tribes, there is not just differences with south but with Darfur and east Sudan. There are many languages spoken in Sudan, but Arabs think they are gods, islamists rule this country for their own selfish corrupt and greedy gains brainwashing the people 😒
Actually Sudan was better under Al Bashir regime. Now the country is BULL SH..T
Yes, please do clarify the 4% and tell us the facts.
But what is the result? Are you not following the path of Libya?

now that sudan is split in two and the only way to get the oil to port is through the north i dont think the trouble is over, but since oil is involved im surprised america hasnt come knocking offering some democracy
@Rommie Peso - The Professor US gave SUdan democracy quid pro quo oil relationships and normalizaiton of Israel
In 2019 the US became a net exporter of oil, through fracking. If they stop fracking and turn back to other countries, then it confirms that they have a deeper agenda, beyond "economic necessity".
@@jimmy_octane very true, we will just have to wait & see and pray for both sudan's in the meantime
As long as Sudan does not host some undesirable elements in their country, America does not care about its oil
South sudan exporting oil to sudan was never an issue, the omly time there was problem was in 2012 cuz of transfer fees. Ever sinde both nations especially now are on very good terms . We even hope for economic integration or customs union
Man literally ran the country to the ground. Let's hope Sudan will finnaly get a competetive gov. . Is the oil drying out completly btw ?
Most, if not all, of the oil wells are in South Sudan. So, for Sudan, yes. No more oil money.
Sudan has enougj for domestic capacity , and there is mamy untapped reserves in western and southern region. Ever since oil was gone , gold became the major source and thats another story

The people were brainwashed by the French to create a divide between the Arab speaking Amazigh and the Amazigh that spoke non Arabic in the entire Maghreb region. After colonial era we made a huge mistake and instead of acknowledging our own Africans history our corrupt leaders were drawn to the arab world for its oil and money and based it that we have same religion and values. Now In every Maghreb country more and more people acknowledge that we are Africans and our history is so much more and so in twined with west African history as well. Politics and religion are like oil and water, they don't mix well! Somewhere along the line he should have took a course in political science and public relations, that make have help him be a better leader! Someone should have come up with the idea of separating the north and south a LONG time ago since there was a big difference in their respective cultures!
What kind of analogy is that?
Why the movie makers in Africa aren't making movies base, on these people?

During this man rule of Sudan there were lot of sufferings and deaths. Allah will judge him accordingly.
Egypt : I'm a big brown bag of shit
Sudan : Oh yeah? Hold my beer!
he ended the war in the south and managed a country under stringent sanctions reasonably well. He did not cause the problems in Sudan but inherited them and managed reasonably
My big take away is that if he had compromised on the Shariah law thing and ended the civil war the country would have prospered.
Religion should never be forced on people and mixed with governance.
That's ridiculous
He literally scuppered the promising peace talks that were taking place just before his coup

The North literally took part in devastating slaves (in tandem with the Turks & Egyptians) that took 2 million South Sudanese people (mostly Fertit) away from their homes and made them property from 1850 until the British put an end to it.
You then started the 1st and 2nd Sudanese civil wars when you annexed large Southern territories, like Kafia Kingi; this area was annexed in 1960 and it was one of the main reasons for the 1st civil war.
You actually are Arabs, so it doesn't matter that you identify with North Africa and the Arab world.

You must only be speaking about Khartoum, because 2 million people died in South Sudan during that time; another 300k people were killed in Darfur; and wars were raging in the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile.
You need to check your facts.
Many mistakes about him, about the country and the events that took place.
Which mistakes?
Worth to note , bashir downfall was actially from 2018 not after 2011 sucessiom. Bashir actually stood stronger and his foreign policies were also on point , he made arab nations on their toes when sudan and iran had good relations only till he diteched iran to support saudi arabia in the yemeni coalitan. Also sudan between 2011 to 2016 was top 6 economy in africa and eastern africa.l despite rising inflations and economic hardship again(saudi arabia investments) at times helped the economy.. 2018 was when the country had soaring inflations and exonomic recession which brought up his downfall
That because of oil not because he had good polices, oil in Sudan lead to what is known ( Dutch disease ) when they ignored agriculture and other sectors, when oil gone they found themselves naked , stupid islamist
