  • For over three decades, Somalia has been at the centre of armed conflict waged in the country by a variety of groups. The overthrow of the Siad Barre’s military regime in Somalia, on 27 January 1991, was the beginning of this state of chaos in Somalia.
Mohamed Siad Barre’s autocratic rule over Somalia began with a coup d’état, including the murder of the former President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke on 15 October 1969, and his rule lasted twenty-two years (1969-91).
The Barre regime became increasingly oppressive and violent in the late 1970s through the 1980s, although mass atrocities did not begin until later.
In this episode of African Biographics,we look at the rise to power, eventual demise and death of Mohammed Siad Barre as well as a brief history of Socialist Somalia.

As a young man starting to learn where things went wrong with our country, I find it difficult to comprehend that tribal issues are the roots of the problems we are still facing to this date.
I don’t understand what the need for representatives of different clans when the society has one core believes and that society is under on diversity group category.
Why are we so focused on clans when we can strive to build one solid government because we are small enough in terms of our differences.
We had so much going on for us before all the complex issues emerged such as being one of the most advanced society in Africa in a lot of categories such as education and economy.

Essentially Barre did not have a choice because the USSR withdrew its aid and sided with Ethiopia. Also the Cubans sided with Ethiopia since Fidel Castro accused Barre of been a chauvinist and not a so-call true socialist. Even then US President Jimmy Carter did not send aid to Barre during the conflict because President Carter on principle could not sanction the annexation of a sovereign territory by another state. The official American military aid came after the defeat of the Somalian army.

he was then taken to safaripark hotel where he stayed with his entire entouarage...racking up bills of up to ksh 4million in those days.he left kenya after 9 months for Nigeria because kenya government would not let him wage war or organize anything in his former country while staying in kenya..risking kenya to be drawn into that conflict. perhaps with hindsight kenya should have helped stabilize somalia then 1990s and instead waited 20 yrs untl terrorists took over ..rest is history.

United States did not help at all Somalia during the Ogaden war, as Siad Barre was expecting . Whilst Soviet Union helped massively Ethiopia with the equivalent of USD 1 bn in 1977-1978. This was a big failure of Carter administration and a victory of Leonid Brejnev . The latter ordered the invasion of Afghanistan by Soviet military in 1979 . I am surprised to see that Americans never did a good effective job , despite their enormous means and structures , during the geostrategic stakes in 70's . Fortunately Ronald Reagan became US President in 1980 , and stroke back effiiciently against the Brejnev doctrine of world domination

Siad Barre is the worst thing to happen to the Somali nation. He sought power without having a clue as to what he might do with it. He bears a very large responsibility for Somalia's sorry state. Somalia will never amount to anything ever again and that is in large part due to Barre's disastrous rule.

He made many students scholarships programmes and education was free back then, something most African countries are yet to achieve till today,He also made Somalia a production centre and there were factories for almost everything, another thing most african countries are yet to achieve. Of course, one can always find negative things, no one is perfect, but he was a man who was more challenged than any other president in the world. His challenge was that he was the leader of a country that had an inherent disease. This terrible disease was and still is tribalism. Somalia has still not found a solution to the country's worst problem to this day. For the first time in 30 years, a president who is not a warlords has been elected. Although crazy tribal leader is trying to put sticks in the wheel, the country seems to be finally starting to get on the right track.

my friend, your narrative is out of proportion. Siad Barre did not promote any of what you write. I am usually against totalitarian regimes, but when a country has built-in errors (tribalism) which are almost impossible to get rid of, and this creates a situation where people despite the same language, religion and skin color can not sit down and have a civilized and fruitful conversation, then the solution can be nothing but leader who rules with an iron fist. Siad Barre had more enemies in the country than outside the country. The controversial things he did were not on the basis of tribalism, but political disagreements. You superficially try to associate his actions to be motivated by tribalism, but if there was anything he hated, it was tribalism. His cabinet consisted of people from all tribes. as you mentioned, we shouldn't look at his controversial actions through tribalist glasses, but instead a more rational approach, otherwise it will perpetuate tribalism and tribalism has already cost hundreds of thousands of innocent Somali lives.
