(The treble of this Sonata could be performed on a 5 feet Musette (= bagpipe) placing at the same time the key G re Sol on the first line of the stave).

They aren't drawn, they're proper frets. They were traditionally made from gut, but today probably from twine or nylon. They're adjustable, and they help give the Viol (or viola da gamba) its signature mellow sound.

They are traditional gut fret markers I believe, common for the viola da gamba, but not used on the cello or violin family instruments.

Nice. I used to play gamba years ago in college, it was a university instrument. Would love to get one to play occasionally now but an acceptable low end instrument starts at like 3000usd or so. And there's the issue of maintenance and repair since these are relatively rare instruments.

They're all amazing musicians . . . but that has to be some of the baddest recorder shredding I have EVER heard!! I'm almost surprised it didn't start smoldering mid-performance! ;-)

You do know they are not related, right? The viola da gamba belongs to the lute and guitar family, it would not be the great-great- grandfather of the cello. They evolved in different countries from vastly different instruments. This is very well documented.

What instrument is the bowed instrument. Looks like it's from the violin family but it has wayyyy too many strings, a weird bow and frets.
bass viol. This is a 7-string bass viole de gamba. There is also a 6-string.

the flute player was kind of playing something wrong (either part repeated which doesn't need to repeated, or one repeat lesser than expected...sorry don't know those songs *g*) / definately what the viola da gamba player totally confused. haha nice xD
but beside of that it's good music and nice playing of them all :)
