Bach - Cantata Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich BWV 150 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

  • In cantata 'Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society conducted by Shunske Sato, the atmosphere changes countless times. This kind of variation in tempo and character is typical of Bach’s early cantatas. It is even referred to sometimes as his earliest cantata. This appears, among other things, from the acrostic that is incorporated in the odd parts of the cantata: the initial letters of the lines of these parts together form the name of the municipal councilor of Mühlhausen (Doktor Conrad Meckbach) who had an important vote in the appointment of Bach as organist there in the year 1707.

This brought back memories. I played the cello part to this cantata when I was fourteen years old (and that part is not easy - listen to what it has to do at 8:05, and we took it slightly faster.) I played it perfectly in the performance, one of the few moments of triumph in my childhood, as I was the youngest person in the concert, and it helped inspire me to take up the Baroque cello. (That chorus I played with, incidentally, had been founded by Dr. Thomas Haynes, father of oboist Bruce Haynes, one of the giants of the historical performance movement until his untimely passing nine years ago.)
In any case this cantata deserves to be much better known. Bach’s early works still have a bit of the seventeenth century clinging to them (with hints of Schutz and Buxthehude), before his compositions became much more rigidly structured, and there’s a sense of spontaneity and experimentation unique to this stage of his career. The final section, a Chaconne, was the inspiration for the final movement of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.
This is the best performance of the piece I’ve ever heard - and I’ve literally been looking all my life for it, since I fell in love with it all those years ago (I just turned 59). It captures the spirit of my childhood performance - while, of course, being much more polished! Thanks so much for this - a great gift in this troubled time.

6:26-6:43 I love the camera-work that matches each singer's entrance. I applaud Guy Cutting for singing so well that consistently high tenor part (that really crosses into the alto!). This really is a very early-sounding old-style Bach cantata for sure! How interesting to hear his cantatas at Leipzig in comparison.

This particular piece escape the mere structural composition of many of the Bach's music, since the melodic fluctuations provide besides the "mathematical" arrangements -of which Bach is the indisputable master- the melodic emotion that touch deeply in our greatful hearts and souls. During these months of quarantine i have taken to listen to a different cantata each morning as i do my planks and stretches. Far from all sounding the same, the variety of musical ideas is simply mind-boggling. When you listen carefully, the opposite is true: not one cantata sounds like the other. Here are three of my favorites:
BWV 106: Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit
BWV 63: Christen, aetzet diesen Tag
BWV 211: Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht (the coffee cantata)
all three have already been released on this channel.
This music is more precious than any jewel. Yet no one owns it. We all get to share in it.
      Just listen.

Splendid performance once again from the NBS. Fascinating to go immediately from this to the equally splendid but distinctly different performance of this cantata on CZcams by VOCES8 and The Academy of Ancient Music, led by Bojan Cicic.

Magnificent, I wish the video included the interaction of the other players.

To Thee, Lord, I raise my soul, my God, in Thee I trust; that I don't get confused! May not my enemies triumph over me!
However I am and remain serene, even if for the moment the cross, the storm and other adversities are raging, death, Hell and what follows. Even if the misfortune befalls the faithful servant, whoever is righteous always remains righteous.
Lead me in Thy truth and teach, because Thou art the God of salvation, in Thee I have always hoped.
The cedars, before the storm often have to suffer the weather of the wind, they are often felled. Turn your words and your works to God, don't worry aboute those who scream at you, His word teaches something else.
I keep my eyes to the Lord because He frees my footh from the snare.
My days of suffering God will finally turn them into joy; along the path full of thorns Christians are guided by the strength and blessing of Heaven. If God remains my true treasure I don't worry about the adversity of man; Christ, who is by my side, helps me win the battle every day.

This cantata was new to me. The performance is incredible. While I had looked up the text and translation, I am glad to see that you had contributed the text in English ( the German text is so well articulated by the soloists and recorded giving such clarity to the beautiful German words)
While I am always learning more German, there is still a disconnect for me. between text and meaning and feeling, so seeing the text in my native language also helps me appreciate it more the way Bach certainly would want. Text and meaning would have been just as important (perhaps an overstatement?) as the music to Bach and this ensemble is painting the words with the score, their technique and even facial expression...all supporting this text. Sure, one can just enjoy the music without its heart, but how much richer to embrace the whole creative expression. Anyhow. Thats how it works for me. Bravo to the on-fire violinist and the far -from- "Zippel Faggotist" - bassoonist as well (I looked up the cantata after reading about it in John Eliot Gardiner's book about Bach...entertaining speculation he makes about Bach’s scuffle with bassonist, Herr Geyersbach...)
      Thanks for text.
      Thanks to NBS for posting.
I too appreciate the art of the countertenor, but love this radiant alto.
