Bach - Cantata Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich BWV 150 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

- In cantata 'Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society conducted by Shunske Sato, the atmosphere changes countless times. This kind of variation in tempo and character is typical of Bach’s early cantatas. It is even referred to sometimes as his earliest cantata. This appears, among other things, from the acrostic that is incorporated in the odd parts of the cantata: the initial letters of the lines of these parts together form the name of the municipal councilor of Mühlhausen (Doktor Conrad Meckbach) who had an important vote in the appointment of Bach as organist there in the year 1707.

Again and again I'm coming back to this cantate... it's beautiful beyond words.
I love the THE NETHERLANDS BACH SOCIETY
I love them too.👍🏻😊💙
Everyone liked that
Why?
Weil sie mit so viel Gefühl singen ❤
So wonderful, it lifts up your heart and leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction and peace of mind.
I've noticed Ms. Nagy in the choir before. She usually has a big infectious smile that always brightens my day.
Voices8 made a recording of this cantata which was excellent. Now there are two groups in first place.
Thank you so much for sharing Bach.
This brought back memories. I played the cello part to this cantata when I was fourteen years old (and that part is not easy - listen to what it has to do at 8:05, and we took it slightly faster.) I played it perfectly in the performance, one of the few moments of triumph in my childhood, as I was the youngest person in the concert, and it helped inspire me to take up the Baroque cello. (That chorus I played with, incidentally, had been founded by Dr. Thomas Haynes, father of oboist Bruce Haynes, one of the giants of the historical performance movement until his untimely passing nine years ago.)
In any case this cantata deserves to be much better known. Bach’s early works still have a bit of the seventeenth century clinging to them (with hints of Schutz and Buxthehude), before his compositions became much more rigidly structured, and there’s a sense of spontaneity and experimentation unique to this stage of his career. The final section, a Chaconne, was the inspiration for the final movement of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.
This is the best performance of the piece I’ve ever heard - and I’ve literally been looking all my life for it, since I fell in love with it all those years ago (I just turned 59). It captures the spirit of my childhood performance - while, of course, being much more polished! Thanks so much for this - a great gift in this troubled time.
Your beautiful trip down memory lane had me in happy tears! Thank You for sharing with us.
I love the Schutz Buxtehude influence. Unjustly forgotten composers
I feel that later Bach is more 'modern' and Italian in structure but the poignancy comes from those early influences
This one is very good -

That intro! Bach is timeless.
6:26-6:43 I love the camera-work that matches each singer's entrance. I applaud Guy Cutting for singing so well that consistently high tenor part (that really crosses into the alto!). This really is a very early-sounding old-style Bach cantata for sure! How interesting to hear his cantatas at Leipzig in comparison.
Schweitzer said he would trade 20 Leipzig cantatas for 1 early cantata. Me too!
Early Bach is so fresh, innovative and vivaldisch. That is my favorite Cantata!
these chromatics lines in canon in first mouvement are amazing, the whole is awesome, gg everybody and Sato!
The younger Bach's genius shines through.... 👍❤️
Het beste orkest voor de grootste componist.
Das beste Orchester für den größten Komponisten.
The best orchestra for the greatest composer.
I couldn't believe how good this sounded. Not just in the quality of the playing, but that this was really Bach. This sounds like him, but with so many mood changes. I think this is my new favorite cantata.
Can't you tell that it was composed in a much earlier style, a style of church pieces that was typical of the late 17th century and the 1st decade of the 18th century?
Wish I cd LIKE this a 1000 times. Didn’t even know this Cantata. The performance of all artists is flawless as is the magnificent filming. I can hardly write this as I’m in a flood of happy and grateful tears. Thank you NBS and all involved for this very, very special treat.
Beautiful said. And I fully agree!
I’ve listened to this gem countless times and followed along in English. What a devotional treat with the combined inspiration of David’s Psalm 25, Bach’s musical offering and the talented members of NBS.
I totally agree with you. 1000 times . A precious experience. Important for me to read your comment . Kindest regards from Holland.
So schön.
I stopped what I was doing at the moment and come here to listen to BACH from Netherlands Bach Society
Superbe !
Thank you for this wonderful performance, and thanks to Bach for te gift he gave to humanity
This is the first performance of BWV 150 on CZcams, and on Disc (CD, SACD),with violinist direction, one voice to a part ,and female alto. Sublime performance of very underrated ,and the first J.S.Bach Cantata. 👏👍🙏
This extraordinary music. Music of the highest order. Wonderfully performed.
The ensemble of the four soloists is breathtakingly beautiful... one of the most beautiful and well balanced quartets I have heard. Sublime! The warmth of a female contralto is also so refreshing - I love the great sound the counter-tenors that NBS have, but I feel they are over used. Thanks for having a contralto here...
Thank you!

Every superlative ...composition, orchestration, feeling, choral, and then there are the performers included in that too........beyond words. Thank you so much JS Bach and the Netherlands Bach Society and you marvellous soloists...spell binding and magnificent and as I say all the superlatives to you all.
An astounding performance as always from the Netherlands Bach Society. I've been impressed by everything I've seen Maestro Sato do - his direction has been so on point. We're extremely lucky to have the Netherlands Bach Society doing this important work.
Bach surprises us in complex chromaticism in the opening Chorus !!!! ❤❤❤ BACH is eternal
Quelle harmonie ! Quelle sensibilité ! Parfait
This performance brings out so well the beauties of this cantata. It feels so much more personal than most performances.
Bravissimi.
As always, the NBC puts out a pristine performance, but the camerawork like that at the beginning of Leite mich just brought it to a whole other level.
Gótica, me parece. Gracias!!!
Unbelievable - such moving music but also so playful! Breathtaking performance as usual.
Bach's music is so amazingly
beautiful🍃Love it
One of the most precious cantata of Bach, wonderful interpretation !

Wonderful and beautiful singers, with such delicate voices! I could listen to this all day! 🙏
Magnificent! This performance sets a high bar.
This little ciaccona is so great! Thank you very much for making the world a better place with every video (and also for finally having a female alto :D)
This was such a wonderfull performance. I love that it is with soloists, very sensitive, thoughtfull played and especially sung. Never heart such a wonderfull rendition of this cantata, thank you all, and thank you Shunske Sato!
A wonderful performance and a joy to listen to. Wish I could have been there for this! Such notably good camerawork too - which is so unusual. I love watching your videos - they're always a pure form of pleasure.
I love the soprano. Very bright, and thick, reminds me a little of Tessa Bonner
Excelente elección de voces. Extraordinarios Instrumentos Bellísima Ejecución.
Magistral Dirección. Shunske SATO eres un GENIO. GRACIAS MAESTRO
Best version of this cantata ever recorded 👌. Tears don't lie ;-)
Another bench-mark performance by the NBS. I do like the addition of a few seconds of the audience's appreciation. Not all NBS videos have that which is a pity. Any mention of an individual among these musicians would be wrong - but - I do love the soprano of Griet de Geyter, ever since that wonderful NBS performance of 'Silent Night' - and what a lot has happened since they recorded that!
Great ensemble, always giving their best! This particular piece escape the mere structural composition of many of the Bach's music, since the melodic fluctuations provide besides the "mathematical" arrangements -of which Bach is the indisputable master- the melodic emotion that touch deeply in our greatful hearts and souls. Thank you!
Yet another triumph! Thank you, Netherlands Bach Society!
Il mio sublime Bach! Quanto sei grande!
Maravillosa Cantata !!! Hermoso trabajo de Netherlands Bach Society. Saludos desde Calama, Chile.
The great beauty of Bach blossoms with this immaculate and passionate performance. Congratulations to the Netherlands Bach Society. (Gefeliciteerd met deze buitengewoon schoone uitvoering!)
*🌟 Classical music has the power to transport you to different eras and places with its melodies.*
The alto is quite lovely, smiling all the time
Todos bellísimos. Increibles.
The soprano seems to be an actual angel
I love this cantata ❤️
Beautiful interpretation, a right balance between philological rigor, interpretative "warmth" and musical expression.
For the few who do not know, immediately after listening to this cantata, I recommend listening to the fourth movement of Brahms' fourth symphony, which is inspired by the final Ciaccona.
(P.S. my avatar is only for love, certainly not to brag about anything, huh 😊😊😊)
OUTSTANDING!
This is an amazing recording. The dark lighting enhances the performance greatly.
Heel mooi
Absolutely sublime. At 3:18 the holding of tension in the harmony is simply breathtaking...
I wish you a great good listen. 🙏
yes Popy it s great...
Outstanding, beautiful.
This is absolutely beautiful!

This is the most amazing music ever written.
Magnificent
Of my favorite openings of Bach’s Cantata’s
Best version ever.
Please listen to Voces8
@@annowen I have, thanks. Indeed a good version. Not my ideal, but that's taste.
Bravissimi !
Goddelijke muziek.
I had never listened to any Cantata of Bach.
After listening to this one, I shall listen to all of them. Honestly, I love the choir... Their voice is just so divine..
Thank you for existing and making our life more beaming.
Shall you post the Bach's Cantatas, as well as St John passion, on Deezer?
Deezer = modern music restricted to a time period. Bach = timeless.
Try some of his finest cantatas BWV 170, 66, 131, 106, 140, 35, 21.
You won't regret it, Sir. Have a nice day.
They already have quite a few on the channel. Try BWV 102 (Herr, deine Augen) and BWV 35 (Geist und Seele wird verwirret) for a start.
Thanks for the suggestion guys.
During these months of quarantine i have taken to listen to a different cantata each morning as i do my planks and stretches. Far from all sounding the same, the variety of musical ideas is simply mind-boggling. When you listen carefully, the opposite is true: not one cantata sounds like the other. Here are three of my favorites:
BWV 106: Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit
BWV 63: Christen, aetzet diesen Tag
BWV 211: Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht (the coffee cantata)
all three have already been released on this channel.
This music is more precious than any jewel. Yet no one owns it. We all get to share in it.
Just listen.
And listen again.
Recht ist, und bleibet ewig Recht !
Superbe , εξαιρετικό ❤❤❤❤❤
exelente linda musica
Zulke prachtige muziek met zulke geweldige musici. Duizendmaal dank NBV🙏🏻
My new favorite cantata. __()__
My too !
Splendid performance once again from the NBS. Fascinating to go immediately from this to the equally splendid but distinctly different performance of this cantata on CZcams by VOCES8 and The Academy of Ancient Music, led by Bojan Cicic.
Magnificent, I wish the video included the interaction of the other players.
Merci beaucoup!
So shcön. Mahtavan kaunista!
I'm getting here hard Buxtehude-vibes^^
Los amo
Wonder!!!
To Thee, Lord, I raise my soul, my God, in Thee I trust; that I don't get confused! May not my enemies triumph over me!
However I am and remain serene, even if for the moment the cross, the storm and other adversities are raging, death, Hell and what follows. Even if the misfortune befalls the faithful servant, whoever is righteous always remains righteous.
Lead me in Thy truth and teach, because Thou art the God of salvation, in Thee I have always hoped.
The cedars, before the storm often have to suffer the weather of the wind, they are often felled. Turn your words and your works to God, don't worry aboute those who scream at you, His word teaches something else.
I keep my eyes to the Lord because He frees my footh from the snare.
My days of suffering God will finally turn them into joy; along the path full of thorns Christians are guided by the strength and blessing of Heaven. If God remains my true treasure I don't worry about the adversity of man; Christ, who is by my side, helps me win the battle every day.
This cantata was new to me. The performance is incredible. While I had looked up the text and translation, I am glad to see that you had contributed the text in English ( the German text is so well articulated by the soloists and recorded giving such clarity to the beautiful German words)
While I am always learning more German, there is still a disconnect for me. between text and meaning and feeling, so seeing the text in my native language also helps me appreciate it more the way Bach certainly would want. Text and meaning would have been just as important (perhaps an overstatement?) as the music to Bach and this ensemble is painting the words with the score, their technique and even facial expression...all supporting this text. Sure, one can just enjoy the music without its heart, but how much richer to embrace the whole creative expression. Anyhow. Thats how it works for me. Bravo to the on-fire violinist and the far -from- "Zippel Faggotist" - bassoonist as well (I looked up the cantata after reading about it in John Eliot Gardiner's book about Bach...entertaining speculation he makes about Bach’s scuffle with bassonist, Herr Geyersbach...)
Thanks for text.
Thanks to NBS for posting.
I too appreciate the art of the countertenor, but love this radiant alto.
