  • How can I be aware of my ego prior to it arising?
Eckhart explains that as you develop deeper Presence, the gap between an aggressive ego assertion and becoming aware of it will shorten. To strengthen our awareness of ego, he suggests practicing Presence in everyday situations so you can notice being taken over by the pain-body.

Eckhart Tolle is widely recognized as one of the most original and inspiring spiritual teachers of our time. He travels and teaches throughout the world.
Eckhart is not aligned with any particular religion or tradition, but excludes none. His profound yet simple and practical teachings have helped thousands of people find inner peace, healing and greater fulfillment in their lives. At the core of his teachings lies the transformation of individual and collective human consciousness - a global spiritual awakening.
Eckhart Tolle is the author of The Power of Now, a #1 New York Times Bestseller, which has been translated into 32 languages and become one of the most influential spiritual books of our time.
In his most recent book, A New Earth, he shows how transcending our ego-based state of consciousness is not only essential to personal happiness, but also the key to ending conflict and suffering throughout the world.

I picked up a leaf and observed the tiniest little caterpillar crawling on the leaf. Watched this tiny creature crawl up the side of the leaf and move its little head up and down and realized this 3-4mm little guy was eating the edge of the leaf. It really just amazed me that I’ve gone my whole life and never slowed down enough to be conscious of something so precious.

Anger is normal, the problem is the overwhelming emotion of anger that 'takes over' and the only way to stop this is a paradigm shift. Anger takes over because we aren't thinking straight about a situation and we have to understand that whatever we think we see is only a tiny fraction of the truth in EVERY situation, so we have to remain open to understanding, almost with curiosity. Eg. if someone appears to be attacking us, we may not see that they are dealing with emotional issues themselves or a whole range of problems we do not know about. Once you can recognise this, you can stop personalising it, stop involving your ego and getting overwhelmed and start to simply solve the problem. Overwhelming anger is definitely about attachment to, and viewing the world through, our ego.

"never stop it by suppressing it" - YES. real mindfulness is about feeling your emotions as much as possible inside your body, without thoughts attached. Then it loses momentum by itself, as no thoughts are fuelling it. Ride the wave, as it were. I think that observing your emotions is way more useful than obsessing about the ego. As Eckhart says, it subsides when you see it.. don't fight it because it will just get stronger!

Mine didn't😓... I recognised the pattern -the rising heat of overreaction to a situation - in time to force myself to walk away & find something else to do in order to get the emotion to subside... I went into the shower, visualised the water rinsing away my emotional "eruption"; I breathed deeply for a few minutes... I suspect I didn't believe deeply enough that these remedies would help, as about 20 minutes later, my head began to pound as it does after a heated argument with someone..😔. Perhsps what I'd really done, was merely to suppress my angry indignation, rather than visualising it flowing down the drain with the water. I recovered & at least the usual argument that often arose in the past, didn't happen this time & I'm hugely grateful for that.😔

It is one of the basic ways that man orders the world around him. This ordering creates all sorts of effects from hatred and domination, to creating furniture, to putting crafts into orbit around the planet, to seeing a business opportunity, to appreciating the beauty of a "rose".
Categorization partitions the reality we see before us each day, an obviously useful thing. However, the unintended consequences of partitioning reality are something important to give consideration to.

That nature is the nature of Life.
When just several years old, I looked closely at a small spider in it's web, coming to wonder if the spider was as aware of me as I was it and, sure right then that it somehow was. A little later, I looked closely at a bush and it's leaves. I became aware that even a single leaf of it was full of life and that life was also in me; with this wonderful gift of life I had been born and my heart felt the recognition of the consciousness of this life, original joy, that I have come to recognise as unconditional love!

I have been following the teachings of Eckhart Tolle since 2013 after going through a shocking and painful divorce at 27 years-old, which shook "my world" and reality as I knew it. All of a sudden, I was alone in the US, without family and friends - I had very little emotional support and had to learn how to rebuild "my life" on my own. The loneliness and disorientation I felt were intense, Eckhart Tolle's teachings was all I had, so I leaned into it heavily, listening to it every day in my solitude and finding comfort in his voice and in the truth I sensed in his teachings. 9 years later, after a difficult journey of uncovering a lot of unconsciousness (the divorce was just the beginning) my life has transformed - I remarried a wonderful man who is kind, loving, patient and we practice spirituality and work on our unconsciousness together, I have started my dream and vision of becoming a spiritual wellbeing coach with a focus on Eckhart's teachings, and my dream of moving to Portugal is finally coming true. I don't want to focus on the "outer layer" only and don't want to give the impression that life is now perfect, we all know this is not the nature of reality. There is still unconsciousness, but more often than not I am aware of it shortly after, so I'm able to let go and not create suffering. I continue to practice presence since I know anything I experience in the world of form is temporary and will eventually dissolve - I want to be cautious not to develop strong attachments to the world of form after manifesting the life that I always wanted. I felt the truth in my bones in everything that Eckhart teaches, but to have put it to the test (how he says it himself), and to now experience and see the truth for myself has been transformational - it has deepened my presence and trust in it, and it is incredibly liberating to feel connected to source throughout normal daily life. Thank you, Eckhart.. I am infinitely and forever grateful for your teachings

Once you habituate relaxation, you will see the following changes:
Before, your string of thoughts and actions would have been
'I need to do this' -> Not actually doing it -> 'I really need to do this' -> Feeling stronger resistance -> 'I need to do this no matter what' -> Feeling self-remorse
But through relaxation, your action patterns will change as the following:
'I should do this' -> Not actually doing it -> Relaxation -> Feeling lower resistance
In such a way, you break away from the pattern of increasing your level of resistance, and create an opportunity to at least begin the work you need to do.

Ah!! So this is why flowers are so beautiful, so that you give your energy to them! I have suffered from a very abusive relationship and I feel deeply, physically unattractive, this is causing me a cycle of pain because I cannot share that recognition of self like the flower and so I can feel myself fading into insignificance! It’s very painful indeed!
