My main reason for board gaming is to see joy in other people when they connect with a game or gaming in general. I never want to win, don’t really care, but teaching and seeing people have fun is awesome.

My #1 is easily social interaction. So much social interaction is either centered around food or looking at a screen together, while board games brings us together around a table. It works really well as a way to get to know people, because it facilitates having something to talk about without the pressure. And it allows you to slowly over repeat interactions around the table get to know people in a more natural way. When I felt my social life was stagnant, seeking out the local board game club ended up being a great solution, because it gave me time and repeat meetings to slowly get to know people.

    some of my top reasons:
    - enjoying artworks (especially on cards and cardboard boards/tiles)
    - enjoying game mechanics
    - enjoying variability
    - enjoying themes

I was talking to someone about the accidental learning in board games just last week. Two terms came up in a very short conversation and I knew both of the terms not from board games directly but actually just from watching the dice tower!

I agree with "Accessibilty" on Tom's list a lot. I made a Top 100 list on BGG geeklists and one of the designers personally thanked me. Me. Someone whose list matters ZERO to the community and which I'll bet only a dozen people even looked at. Crazy. I've also seen several people I'd say were "Gamer famous" at Conventions and who were very obviously available to meet, but I'm generally too shy to step up and say anything.

aww I love everyone’s lists! I would add board game cafes - such a fun thing to be able to do especially when traveling, it’s like a comfort space and you can watch other people having fun, play a game you don’t have or couldn’t afford and spend time with anyone! ❤

Hey! Great list folks! All of these top ten items could have their own top 10 list. I'd love a list of games I can "accidently" learn from.
I think my top three would be: 3) achieving a meditative flow state through personal expertise in a game. 2) Great themes that *make* me learn. 1) Bonding - Strengthening relationships with friends and family.
Last comment, Zee makes me laugh almost everyday, thanks man.

On the note of organizing and being meticulous, I just got Endless Winter. When I opened the box and saw how each thing had its on special insert and a sheet for how to use the inserts, I was soooo excited (maybe unnaturally so) and I got to sit and sort it out and enjoyed every minute of organizing it.

Thrill of Improvement is such a good one. I think that's a big part of why Dominion is one of my favorite games, the journey of going from bad to average and feeling like I'm constantly learning how to be better at the game is something very rewarding but also personal.

  • @shantelalbert7151
    @shantelalbert7151 Před 5 měsíci +4

Thrill of improvement is so good, for me it gives me that feeling accomplished as I "crack the code", that's why I love Vital Lacerda games (also, love the idea and term of "accidental learning") thank you for putting into words my own feelings 💕

  • @LegoAssassin098

One of my favorite things abour games is seeing a thematic and mechanical element come together. I may not like the game, but I love peeking behind the curtain at the mechanism and seeing what the designer and publisher were intending with that idea.
For example the simple idea of pandemics shuffle and place on top mechanic is one of my favorite mechanisms because it was one of the first times i played a game and was like "ohhh thats super clever! Its emulating this real world idea!"
I had played the normal monopoly and uno, but having it emulate something and realizing what its emulating on my own and discoving that is so much fun for me.

    1. I love beautiful art/ components
    2. I love strategizing. Whether it be for efficiency or fun or both! (My brain needs to be exercised regularly)
    3. I suck at small talk. Therefore, games are a great way to spend time with people I enjoy being around without having to engage in conversation about topics I'm not really interested in.
    4. I really love seeing " what's going to happen" as far as randomness and player choices are concerned.

Accessibility: At GenCon 2023, we attended the magnificent musical rewards show and sat front row, within reach of so many great people from the industry. My buddy kept harassing me aboit sitting so close to the designer of a certain multiple award winning game whose cutesy dragon art the world swoons for, but which actively kept me from even trying the game. (I know, I am scum)
Fast forward in time to the final day of the con as we sit down at Pandasaurus games to demo Emerge, and who should sit down right across from me, but a certain game deaigner! I congratulated him on his awards, and we had a great time during the game. I even played a perfectmove and he called me a name I will not repeat here as it stole the move from him. I was thrilled with the experience in spite of the fact that I sat there terrified that my buddy was going to rat me out at any moment!

Amen on Tom's #5!! My boyfriends parents are a little older than mine (65s instead of 55s) and his dad "Does not enjoy any games"... which is WILD to me. So they come over (I love them btw) and they just want to sit in the kitchen for hours and talk 0_0 My whole family plays boardgames. They are apart of every family gathering/holiday. Party games when we have a lot of people, or "real boardgames" for when fewer people are interested in that session.

1 thing that only boardgames let you do: SCHEMING!
I can sit around a table and plot the destruction of the people around me. I anticipate your moves and plot my counter. Then, when we're done we can joke about all the tactics we were going to use.
Scheming isn't otherwise acceptable in polite society 😏

The BIG difference as to why I love board games over competitive games like some card games or video games or even sports, is because it really doesn't matter if you win or lose. It never feels like the purpose of the game. It is more about people coming together to see cool stuff happen.
