John Lennon was so fucking brilliant. Not only in his music but in his character most of all. He gave such in depth answers to the shallowest of questions. He really made you think when he spoke. Tom Snyder did a terrific job in this interview as well.

Some folks make fun of Tom Snyder’s hokey tv’ishness, but he was sharp, had a great memory and was kind and polite. He was such a delightful documentarian of the 1970s.
I get what you mean, but there genuinely are artists like him these days, but they are often obscured by the mainstream brainwashing we call music now-a-days... Or they join the contemporary pop-wagon in order to go big. Look at some of coldplay's first albums and songs, it's rather original and unique. Or people like Alec Benjamin, especially some of his earlier music, very artistic. I'm not comparing, rather mentioning. What made John a cut above the rest, is that he had experience and a talent for combining art and poetry with good sounding music and theory. As stated in the interview, he got to work with many musicians, whicb I think, really gave him some good wisdom and knowledge in the field. And he was overall a good guy.
I love John Lennon, but I really came here for Tom Snyder. This doesn't feel like an interview, it feels like a conversation. That's what made hosts like Tom, Dick Cavett & Jack Paar a cut above the rest.
Dick Cavett was primarily an entertainer; he admitted he got into show business to become famous. He was a writer who got his own gig, complete with monologue. The "conversations" were as much an opportunity to ad lib as learn something about the guests. He did have quite a few great guests, which is why it worked so well.

I met him that year at the WFIL TV studios in Philly and he looked just like this…he was really cool; talked with me for about 10 minutes discussing a bootleg album I had of The Beatles live in Japan (he signed it too) “We were ‘orrible on that last tour!” all you need is love to give peace a chance; R.I.P. Tom was an interesting person in his own right, and a good interviewer. John was articulate and energetic- so sad what we as a society missed out on ...
Only other interview I have seen Tom do is with Charles Manson and unfortunately like Geraldo he fell into the bully boy trap . Wanting to act the tough guy while being a privileged interviewer and asking the same nonsensical questions over and over . I just don't understand why interviewers will go in with a hardened criminal who is used to constant threats in a prison environment and try and act like they're Mike Tyson pushing chest out and acting all scary when it just makes the person shut down and laugh at them. Not putting Tom down I have only seen one interview with Manson apart from this but he should have changed his style of interview approach when all he was doing was hitting a brick wall against Manson. Dick everret (think he's called) interviewed both John and George and he was able to go to a plan B and plan C when George was difficult to crack
You know, whenever I feel like I am at some kind of crossroads as a musician, or feel like I need some inspiration... I always find myself wanting to listen to John talk. It's as if he's become the touchstone in my life to remind myself what music and art are really about.
Honestly an amazing interview. Lennon is full of wisdom and sharp as ever while the interviewer is asking articulate questions. No canned laughs, no music, no annoying comic relief, etc. Talk shows now are a fever dream compared to what they we're in the 70s and even the 80s. Oh and that last part where he talked about being able to go where he wants without fear of people disturbing him... Foreshadowing if i've ever seen any.
I agree with you. A fun one to watch is Graham Norton. He gets multiple celebrities on the couch at the same time. Much better than anyone in North America.
I find it absolutely fascinating that John became enamored with the US and fought tooth and nail to get his citizenship to be able to live in America. It’s sad that he died in a city that he loved.

70’s Disco was pretty great! Gotta agree with him here. Proved to be true as well and Still dominates many airwaves and TIkToc vids. Stayin Alive album is incomparable.
Abbey Road was as good an album if not better than anything they had ever done. No idea how they came up with such brilliance time and time again. By 1970 they were young adults needing to go their own ways, but what a ride that was.
John sang about what it meant to be human. I was 16 when he was taken away from us. I remember that night. I couldn’t believe it. I wanted so much to grow old with him.
If only we could have John today. Not because his views are the right views, or his ideas. We were robbed by never having any new songs from one of the two Mcartney and Lennon best song writers to ever walk the earth. If given the chance to meet him i bet he would be so nice. R.I.P John. Great interview..I remember one in which was about a time later than this interview..when he was walking around New York and came to a crosswalk waiting for the green light and a woman said something along the lines of “Aren’t you…” and Lennon just put his finger up to his lips and went Ssssssssh…how cool was that experience!!
That is a great analogy on evolving your style. You got to move on and play ( work, laugh, write, learn, study etc) with someone ( other people, groups etc) else if you are going to learn and grow.

the guy kinda reminds me of another geneus - Jimmy Persey. I know that Lennons admired Persey's early work, and it is a little know fac that he played on the Kidz Next Doors' demos - Persey's younger brother Robbie was in that band. So John's involvement in that family went beyond just being close friends with Jim. RIP John!

Tom Snyder predicts the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays - so in fact, it wasn't Tony Wilson who created Madchster - but an American talkshow host.
Tom Snyder is so badass! He’s so better than Oprah Winfrey, Wendy Williams , etc. Tom asks really good questions and doesn’t interrupt his guests.
